It's to do with making sure parliament recesses now rather than at the end of this week to prevent Boris Johnson trying to ram through his Withdrawal Bill between now and Friday.

I'll vote for whichever party is most likely to keep the Tories out of the Burnley constituency. Unless the Lib Dems put up Birtwistle, then i'll be voting Labour regardless.

If anyone had any doubt about this, Downing Street has confirmed it will withdraw the general election bill if MPs attach amendments to extend votes to either 16- and 17-year olds, or EU nationals.

Boris Johnson’s spokesman had already said such a move would bring “administrative chaos”, and go against the convention that changes to the franchise are done over time and via consultation, but went no further.

However, a No 10 source confirmed such amendments would be fatal to the bill:

You cannot honestly argue that you are supporting an election on 12 December and vote for a change in the franchise. It’s quite clear a vote to change the franchise would create a six-month delay.

I have almost always voted Labour in GE.
Except for when Birtwistle got in when I voted for him.

This time will have to be a considered choice on which I think will win, between Stewart (preferred choice) or at worst Tory.

Without face value assurances, it warrants the benefit of the doubt, it's common knowledge well highly suspicious when voting more than a singular vote can be repeated, the systems got loopholes & easily exploited.

If 16 is old enough to serve in the Armed Forces then it should be old enough to give them the vote. However, I fear there isn’t time to make this work by December.

At risk of trying to talk sense, saying someone "belongs" to a particular country or that that country "belongs" to them, is not controversial. If I visit Germany, short term or long term, I still belong to Britain. If I emigrate to Germany and get a German passport, then I belong to Germany. Or if I get dual nationality, then I belong to both.

There's no deal as far as I know. But if there is I expect Farage to demand something huge from Boris, like the Deputy PM role. He might prefer the US ambassadorship though.

To be honest, I don’t care if anyone believes it or not.
It is true, to be fair.

However, drawing attention to these issues is important.

And also to be fair, I have no idea why parties would push for this except for the point it facilitates two votes.

Why else is it important??

And i've explained to you why they want a Dec 9th vote. A Dec 12th vote would make no difference to those who want to vote in two constituencies anyway, because they'd be postal voting in their Uni constituency and in-person voting at home.

Why not allow 14, 12, 10 years olds.

Perhaps we can have postal votes from birth.


Trying to change long standing rules such as this should be done over time in considered arenas.

It just comes across as allow anyone to vote who we think will be on our side.

Adding EU residents is slightly dangerous.

How long do they have to have been here?? Can we just get coach loads of EU nationals to register and just bring them over on the day.

This obvious drive to try to fix the vote is so obvious it’s embarrassing.

If individuals are able to work and contribute, and as mentioned above are able to serve in the armed forces at 16 then they are entitled to have a say in how our country is run. Stop being a belmtard by suggesting postal votes from birth

You're allowed to start a family at 16 so how can anyone justify arguing against giving 16 year olds the right to vote? It's hilarious seeing people try.

Students can't vote twice. They can register in 2 places ( home and uni town) and then choose where to vote.

I don’t agree with having a GE which will in essence just be a referendum on Brexit but a referendum which will end up with another hung parliament. What do we do then?

Does that also apply to 1 student with 2 identities, you can easily change your surname online legally by deed poll & use that new name elsewhere, basically transfer the new name onto your driving licence ect, whilst using the old name as well. I know I've done it not for fraudently purposes, may I add.
