Best Burnley fight back you have ever seen ?
Best Burnley fight back you have ever seen ?
Following on from the `Have you ever left a Clarets game early` it made me think which was Burnleys greatest fight back I have seen. The game which stands out in my memory was Stoke away in 63/4 season Stoke were 3 up at ht. We got a couple back around the hour mark but Stoke made 4-2 in the 81st minute. Those who left early missed 2 brilliant Gordon Harris goals that gave us a 4-4 draw, Jimmy Mac played for Stoke and I think Gordon Banks played also, but I might be wrong.

The home match against Preston in 2010. 1-3 down with 7 or 8 minutes to go to leading 4-3 before even getting to time added on.

Ones that springs to my mind are the 2 games against Preston. 3-2 in 06/07 I think it was, we went 1-0 up then 1-2 down before winning it 3-2. A few years later the 4-3 against Preston when we were 1-3 down at home. The 2002 win at deepdale was pretty special too.

A few over the years, but the outstanding one has to be Tottenham away in Dec.'60. We'd played away at Rheims in the European Cup three days earlier and quickly went 0-4 down at White Hart Lane. We found some legs and courage from somewhere and goals from Connelly(2), Pointer & Robson gave us a 4-4 draw.

I recall one against Newcastle in the seventies. Tottenham in the cup here was also amazing until their late goal.

Re: Best Burnley fight back you have ever seen ?
I was at Chelsea in 1974 when we were 3-0 down at half time and got a draw, but a crucial one was on the Turf against Crystal Palace in Coyle’s promotion season. We desperately needed a win but went 2-0 down and we were still 2-1 down with 7 minutes left and level with 2 minutes to go but won the game 4-2.
I was a vital game too, we’d lost the previous home game against Sheff Wed. It was a crucial game.

2-0 down at Hull only to come back to win 3-2 under Howe.
This board was brilliant that afternoon. Or at least the old one was.

Burnley v Charlton. 70s. Sure we were 4-1 down and managed a4-4 draw.

I was going to mention this one played on 16th October 1976.
Also the fight back to 4-4 on aggregate in Carling Cup Semi Final 2nd leg at home to Spurs will live long in my memory before Spurs went through in ET.

Although we ultimately lost the tie, the comeback from 4-1 down against Spurs in the League Cup semi was pretty special and the atmosphere that night was unbelievable.

I remember a game at Anfield, we were two goals down but scored three in about 20 minutes. It finished 3-3 with the equaliser coming late on.

Preston was good
But even though was only one nil down, to come down from that away at Rovers in such a crucial game so late on and especially when we hadn’t beat them in 30 odd years and had surrendered our best chance yet in the home game and previous away game. Has to be that.

Was sat in the big stand that night on the side where the teams come out. I’m sure that the night that Raquel Welch was sat just in front of us.

Not strictly a fight back, but...the 3-2 win against Luton away in 2005. We were down to 10 men after Beast was sent off. John Spicer in goal, Ade hat trick, a great performance!

I was also at that game. Despite having been a fan since 58-59 it was the first time I'd seen us play in our white away kit. Was stood in the open terrace behind the goal but all of our goals were scored down the other end. Jimmy Mc played for Stoke along with one or two other 'oldies' such as Peter Dining, Roy Vernon and Jackie Mudie, I think. Over 37,000 there. Think it was still Leslie in goal for Stoke. Gordon Harris' free kick from the edge of the box to make it 4-3 was an absolute screamer.FCBurnley wrote:Following on from the `Have you ever left a Clarets game early` it made me think which was Burnleys greatest fight back I have seen. After a very action packed day in Carlisle I seem to remember Andy Wharton banging in a last minute or two equaliser. Early 80’s me thinks. One of my favourites - which led to “let’s all have a disco na na na na”.

The game against Macclesfield? 1999? I think we were 3-1 down and won 4-3. Needed to win that one to stay up and we then went on an unbeaten run that we continued on to promotion the year after. I think ....
Obviously, a reverse would be the absolutely awful game at Bradford in about 2002 when they equalised in the last minute with nine men. Shocking stuff.
