A certain world class duo Gareth Bale and Modric put them 2-0 up before the Clarets came storming back.
Spurs set off like a house on fire hoping to get above Arsenal and remove the need for the Champions League qualifiers. They went 2-0 up and then discovered Arsenal were 3-0 up.

In terms of comebacks v Spurs, there were our two league games against them in their 1960/61 double season. We were 4-0 down at White Hart Lane and got a 4-4 draw and then came back from 2-0 down on the Turf to beat them 4-2.

And spurs last year. Again only a goal but some come back.

Spurs didn’t go in front against us last season. We were 1-0 up.

Middlesbrough away 72/73. 3 1 down with 5 minutes to go, drew 3 3. Set the tone for the season...

We have had some great games against Spurs over the years.
The league cup comeback when one down was celebrated well. Little and Davis goals sent the home crowd wild, even if it was sparsely spread out.

Already mentioned but Preston at home under Laws, Palace at home under Coyle, Barnsley at home under Cotterill and Macclesfield at home under Stan were stand out fight backs....

....but I would have to go with Spurs at home in the 2nd leg of the league cup semi final. I know we didn't end up winning but we gave them a real fright. We did what most people thought was impossible, yet the crazy thing was, many Burnley fans thought it was possible. I remember having a conversation on the way over to the game saying that if we can go one up and then get the second with a little time left we could give it a real go for the final few minutes. Any other football fan would have thought I was in dreamland even suggesting that might happen.

3-3, after being 3-1 down with a few minutes to go at Middlesbrough in the 72/73 championship season. Dobo got the equaliser, which sparked off a melee in the seats. I lost my favourite scarf and my mates car had his lights on his mini broken post match.

I remember two on consecutive home games. 0-3 down at half time to Orient to draw 3-3 and 1-4 down at half time to Charlton to draw 4-4 (with a sitter missed by Flynn (I think) late on or we would have won. I'm pretty sure it was two consecutive Saturdays as well for some reason.

The 4-3 v Preston was good and of course the 2-1 win at Rovers to shut them up about their ridiculous 30 year claim (it was after all only 9 league games and about 3 of those were draws I seem to recall.

Those Orient and Charlton games were on consecutive Saturdays - Terry Cochrane's first two games for us too.

And Cochrane scored in both those games too. Clever and tricky winger was TC but probably best remembered for his winning goal at Ewood the following season, '77/'78.

I became a Claret in the early 1960s when Burnley v Spurs games were really special games between two great sides with some wonderful footballers, and even in more recent years there have been some incredible games against them. I always look forward to games against them.

I'd forgotten that Tony, Cochran is right up there with one of my all times at Burnley, loved him. Of course I am pretty sure he scored the only goal of a game at Ewood to win it for us. That alone makes him a legend.

Thanks for confirming that for me Royboy - see my above post. I was sat in the Nuttall Street stand that day. I'm sure there was more than the usual trouble at that game as well. Weren't they throwing pool balls at each other - saw a few people being stretchered out.

Paul Fletcher, Terry Cochrane & Malcolm Smith scored against Orient with the goals against Charlton scored by Smith, Peter Noble, Fletcher & Cochrane.

Ah - Malcom Smith. A decent goal scorer for us as well. Am I right about Flynn missing the 'sitter' toward the end of that Charlton game - someone did and I'm sure it was him, I seem to recall we on the Longside were so certain it would go in we celebrated a bit prematurely.

I was at both of them games and my favourite team of watching us
But i am surprised no one as mentioned this one we were a newly promoted side that had just won the 3rd division title
And struggled in the league to buy a win but in this season 82/83 were a very different animal in the Cups.
We had progressed to both quarter finals of both domestic Cups
The milk cup was dtawn and everyone anticipating the draw
Tottenham Hotspur's away this team included the likes of Hoddle,Ozzy Ardiles.Ricardo Villa.
Perryman,Archbold Fallco Brazil,Clemence and many more stars it was packed with them.
We had some news filtering down that we had just sacked our manager and i think it was casper as caretaker in charge with Miller making way
We had our work cut out and you could only guess how many Tottenham would score
Surely enough we conceded if i recall 10 minutes before the interval with a wonderful strike from Terry Gibson.
So 1 nil down with us in the game but not a lot to note from our point of view.
This second half no one in the world would have predicted what was about to unfold.
4 goals was put passed the England number one
As the second goal went in clearly an own goal in the dug out sat the one and only Jimmy Holand our loveable physio jumped up in sheer delight not realizing the dudgout was low and slit his head open with his celebrations in our predicament.
Another own goal and a brace from Mr Hamilton won us the day on this epic win to defeat all odds even Keith Berkinshaw was gobsmacked in his interview couldn't find the words for this truly embarrassing result they were a top top team
It set up a tie with mighty Liverpool first leg being away at Anfield but thats another story UTC

Most satisfying: two very late goals at Ewood to come away with a 2-2 draw, December 1976.

Could be my memory playing tricks on me as I was only 10 at the time but I seem to remember a game mid 80's being 1-2 down to Wrexham with 15 minutes to go and us ending up winning 5-2.

Best I have ever seen in the flesh was the 4-3 Preston game.
Iwelumo hattrick :O I remember him getting so much stick that season 'seen canal boats turn faster than him' etc and he even responded to fans in Jimmy Mac stand once when he was getting stick.

But oh boy, that hattrick and game will be most likely what he's remembered for...been on a couple of other comeback games, but that takes the biscuit. A local derby game, going into the 85th min 3-1 down.. to end up 4-3 up in stoppage time.

Think they had a man sent off, Billy Jones iirc.. but still a great come back. Remember the bitter interview by Darren Ferguson afterwards 'we were the only team that played football that day' :D

69-70 v. Crystal Palace at home. 0-2 down and won 4-2.

What is unusual is that exactly the same thing happened the following Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.

I'm glad this has been mentioned. I wasn't there as I was a full time student in London I have told this story before so sorry for the repetition. A friend of mine attended the game arriving late to find us 1-0 up. By the time it reached the 80th minute we were 3-1 down and he decided to get away early. When he tuned in for the results at 5o'clock he was amazed to find out we had drawn 3-3. We'd scored 3 goals away from home and he hadn't seen any of them.

The second leg win against Spurs already referred to was an iconic night and made me believe we could compete with the best. It was also the night when we saw a Messi level performance from the little master Blake.

Two to mention just because they were unusual in being like identical games on successive Saturdays at the Turf, and I just checked the dates, just before my birthday :) - 11th Oct '69 we beat Palace 4-2 after going 0-2 down; then the following week Oct 18 again at the Turf we came from 0-2 down to beat Sheff Weds 4-2 again at the Turf. I have a vague recollection of saying to my dad when we went 0-2 down against Wednesday in the second game something like "Do you think we can do what we did last week?" and him replying like "I don't think so against these, they have a better defence....".

Anyone recall a League Cup replay at Bradford City early season late 70's. 2-0 down at half time and we'd got nothing and deserved nothing. We got one back almost immediately the 2nd half began, got the equaliser and then got a late winner. Remember being stood beside the stand that so tragically burned down a few years later. Peter Noble and Billy Ingham got two of the goals,I think.

From the Evening Standard Headlines Dec 3rd 1960. Greaves scores 5 of Chelsea 7(WBA).
TOTTENHAM 4 UP- HELD TO 4-4
Match report by Bernard Joy THIS WAS THE MATCH OF THE CENTURY
This was not the match of the season- it was the match of the century. Spurs hitting3 goals in a fantastic three-minute spell here at White Hart Lane, jumping into a 4-0 lead. Then came the magnificentfight back by the reigning champions Burnley. And the result was a 4-4 draw.
Spurs first half onslaught came with a ferocity and suddenness which shattered Burnley. I doubt whether any team would have stood up to it.
The man who sparked off the spell was inside right John White. He refused to panic when Burnley had his colleagues reeling with fantastic football in the opening 15 minutes.
TWO FOR JONES
By continuing to play methodically he steadied the other forwards. It was from a corner by White that the first goal came after 18 minutes. The ball went wide to Mackay, who it straight back and Norman scored with a diving header.
Within another 3 minutes Spurs were 3 up. Jones scoring both goals. For the first a long throw by Mackay was helped on by Smith, who was playing despite a cold and Jones crashed it in first time. A minute later Allen and White combined on the left and Smith jumped over the centre leaving Jones an open goal.
I give Burnley full credit for fighting despite the heartbreaking position of being 3 down after all the early running.
It was thrill a minute football now, with Spurs just holding the edge. If Spurs rare the prospective champions, then Burnley are worthy to hold the title at present. Spurs were a well oiled machine, while Burnley exploited the game to perfection.
Connelly's miss
Two fine saves by Brown were followed by Connelly missing a fine chance from Pilkington. At the other end pile drivers by Allen and Mackay were scrambled away.
Burnley had another heartbreaking experience in the 36th minute, when Blacklaw mis- judged a 30 yard shot from Mackay and the ball slipped out of his grasp into the goal.
Burnley still refused to give up and 2 minutes later Connelly obtained the goal they richly deserved.
Just on half time a shot by McIlroy hit Brown on the foot as he dived , went straight up into the air and fell into his arms. That was the sort of luck Burnley were having- and yet there was no doubt Spurs deserved their lead.
Half-time Tottenham 4,Burnley 1.
Despite the heavy pitch- the covers were removed early today- the speed/ skills and thrills were maintained after the interval.
In the very first minute after the re start Jones made a fine run from the half way line , took a return pass from Allen and crashed in a low shot, which brought the save of the match from Blacklaw.
Burnley immediately retaliated with a combined move, in which the forwards- interchanged brilliantly. McIlroy shot and Brown got away with a despairing dive.
Jones was now the mainspring of the Spurs attack and was as likely to turn up as Centre Forward as he was likely to on the wings. He had fine service from Blanchflower.
Dangerous wingers.
The raids of wingers Connelly and Pilkington were very dangerous and Spurs backs looked uneasy under pressure. Within 2 minutes Burnley took advantage of two defensive errors to reduce the lead to 4-3 after 60 minutes play.
Henry tried to stop a cross shot from Pilkington which was going wide and the ball slithered away from him to Robson, who scored easily.
Then Norman only partially clea edfrom the goalmouth and Pointer snapped up the ball and ran on to beat Brown with a cross shot.
There were breathtaking escapes at both ends , as each team flung in everything for another goal. The 58,000 spectators were enthralled at this vigorous and brilliant battle for mastery, between two great teams.
Best of All
Connelly equalised after 74 minutes with the goal of the match, after a lightening exchange of passes with Robson. Immediately afterwards Allen hit the Burnley post.

Many memories for us old enough to remember those games/days.
Another memorable match was the Spurs home 7-2 when Sammy Todd made his debut, in the mid 60s.

My finger is numb after that 1 fingered write up, but I'm hope it will give a lot pleasure reading it.

The game which stands out in my memory was Stoke away in 63/4 season Stoke were 3 up at ht. We got a couple back around the hour mark but Stoke made 4-2 in the 81st minute. Those who left early missed 2 brilliant Gordon Harris goals that gave us a 4-4 draw, Jimmy Mac played for Stoke and I think Gordon Banks played also, but I might be wrong.

So your greatest Clarets Comeback is ??
I was also going to cite this as my favourite comeback. This was a Stoke side packed with old stars such as,I think,Clamp,Mudie,Matthews(at the club but I don't know if he played) and, maybe,Dobing. I had always thought that the 'fight -back' was from 4-1 down but I am probably wrong. The thing I do remember is eating a delicious meat pie on the indoor market after the match. Was a keeper called Jeff Farmer in goal for Stoke that day?
