Big away followings
I've been part of some big away followings watching Burnley but this is ridiculus.
Dynamo Dresden are expected to take 35,000 fans for their away match against Hertha Berlin in the German Cup tonight.

Re: Big away followings
If you believe Blackburn and Blackpool fans that figure pales into insignificance compared to the numbers they bring to Turf Moor.

So nearly half of the capacity, which is just under 75,000.Quickenthetempo wrote:I've been part of some big away followings watching Burnley but this is ridiculus.

Re: Big away followings
Most German papers saying 30,000/ over 30,000 expected.
They're having to open up a disused airfield to accommodate 10,000 vehicles
1,000 police on duty around the stadium (also seen reports that 1500 security personnel in total re the game).
Wild Saxons from the East in the capital.

Re: Big away followings
As someone has pointed out Hertha's ground is huge by most standards but the ticket allocation is very generous even so. And I think Hertha themselves are very well supported so why that allocation I wonder?

Re: Big away followings
Biggest league following I've seen for us was probably at Preston in May 73,the 1-1 draw that ensured us being champions. Another one that springs to mind was Boxing Day,72 at Blackpool where we won 2-1. I've often wondered how many Clarets went to Maine Rd. on May 2nd,1960 to see us win the First Div. Championship in front of 65,000 that night. My brother went on a coach from Haslingden but he did have time to get home from school in Blackburn, get changed and have his tea before he set off. I've asked him several times about it and he never thought he was 'cutting it fine'.

Re: Big away followings
I went with my Dad, my Grandad and a reporter in the Burnley Express van. We had to park a couple of miles away as the thousands of fans from Burnley descended on the ground. My Grandad and I had difficulty entering the ground as the turnstiles were closing but there was a children’s turnstile open and I got in and patiently waited for my Grandad. Eventually, to my surprise he came in via the same turnstile having slipped the operator a couple of bob.
When we got inside we were 1-0 up already and we had a poor view from the back of the terraces. When we scored our second the crowd surged forwards and we improved our view from lower down the terrace. The second half was very slow moving but we won and that was all that mattered.
Silky, give my regards to your brother please. Hope you are both well.

Re: Big away followings
Most of the large away followings down the years are on this thread. There’ll be a few missing.

Re: Big away followings
Thanks,Frenchclaret. He's told me that you went to the game with relatives and were concerned about not getting in. For me I was just past my 8th birthday and there was no chance mum would let me attend the game. There was no way of finding out how the match was progressing but just after 9 pm my dad went out of the house, came back some 20/25 minutes later and uttered to me the words I'll never forget .......'we've done it'.Frenchclaret wrote:I went with my Dad, my Grandad and a reporter in the Burnley Express van. I really have no idea how he knew and it has just remained a mystery since which we all occasionally mull over when we get together. The news may have given the score( I stress 'may have' because it was the only game played that night in a season that finished the previous Saturday) but that would have been at the very least one hour after dad found out. There was no coverage of the game at all. Very mysterious. I will pass on your regards to older brother and hope you and yours are in good health.
