Ollie Norwood
Ollie Norwood
Read a good interview about how he was a season ticket holder up until he was 16, of course I was aware he was born here but wasn’t sure he was a real Burnley fan. The question is, why have we seemingly never been really linked with him? He’s clearly good enough at this level. I’d have him in permanently over a loan signing of Drinkwater any day of the week, i believe if he was here, he’d start every week.
It’s an interesting one how Rodriguez gets all the love and talk but Norwood largely ignored. Harvey Barnes I believe another born in Burnley, does he consider himself one of us?

Re: Ollie Norwood
I only learned recently try that Harvey Barnes is the son of Paul Barnes.
Harvey was born the same week his Dad scored a goal in a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City. A few weeks later he signed for Huddersfield.
I’ve noticed his Wikipedia has been updated - his Place of Birth now says Leicester. I’m pretty sure it’s Burnley though, though he was brought up in Leicester so he won’t consider being from Burnley.

Yeah I was certain he was born here, wasn’t aware his Dad was an ex Clarets player. Makes sense though, born here for a week or two, poor lad was a few more weeks away from converting to the Clarets full time.claptrappers_union wrote:I only learned recently try that Harvey Barnes is the son of Paul Barnes.

We have been linked with him loads of times over the years but none of them were anything other than paper talk. I wouldn't have him in our team over our CM's possibly at a stretch Jack Cork.KRBFC wrote:Read a good interview about how he was a season ticket holder up until he was 16, of course I was aware he was born here but wasn’t sure he was a real Burnley fan. I'd certainly have him in our squad though.

Re: Ollie Norwood
I think it was in Dyche’s first summer with us that we definitely had the opportunity to buy Ollie. We were approached by his agent and we could not afford his wages - I don’t think there was a transfer fee involved as from memory he was end of contract. I know someone who is still in regular contact with him and known him for years.Burnley1989 wrote:We have been linked with him loads of times over the years but none of them were anything other than paper talk. Sounds like he is a great lad who has worked really hard and it’s good to see him doing really well.
Theodore’s lad and I saw him play at school where he was head and shoulders above everyone else

Re: Ollie Norwood
Had a good career. Especially for Northern Ireland until this year. Always done well against us. But not convinced he’s ever been as good as what we have had at the time. Never would have been ahead of marney, Barton and Jones or cork, defour, Westwood and Hendrick.
Re: Ollie Norwood
You wouldn’t have him over Cork? I feel like Cork plays a pivotal scrappy role, similar to Marney, a lot of leg work so maybe you’re right in terms of wouldn’t fit the system but imo Cork is the 1st player who needs upgrading.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Had a good career. Re: Ollie Norwood
Tbf there is a reason why this the first season he has played in the Premier League. He was sold previously twice by promoted clubs and was not always a regular in the teams he has played at.
Ollie has never been the biggest or the quickest and they are the 2 main things that held him back from playing for bigger clubs.
That Sheff United team are full of players from the lower leagues who are playing really well under a manager not too dissimilar to SD in how he gets his players to play in a system and over achieve.
I think Ollie was good enough to play in one of SDs initial squads but as said we could not afford him at the time. But for most of the midfields we have had since then there is nothing to suggest he was a better player than what we had - which is what the other teams (who were below us) also thought when they were selling him.

Problem is you can't believe what's on Wiki half of the time which is a shame. I was always under the impression that he was born in Burnley, similarly Harry Davis (now at Grimsby) who was born in Burnley when his dad Steve played for us.claptrappers_union wrote:I only learned recently try that Harvey Barnes is the son of Paul Barnes.

No. I wouldn't have him ahead of Cork who has played almost 250 more premier league games.KRBFC wrote:You wouldn’t have him over Cork? Have we signed the son (born in Burnley?) of Rouwen Hennings as yet ? Rouwen has scored 5 goals for Fortuna Duesseldorf this season...average Kicker mark = 3.81 (best is 1.00 worst is 6.00)

Re: Ollie Norwood
Not sure on Beardsley but 100% we didn’t turn Essien down. He was in the north west and trained with us for a few days as a favour. I do remember Beardsley playing against us for Carlisle and running the show. He’d have been very young then.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Didnt we turn down beardsley and essien too and released Dixon,Sonner and Pugh who all had better careers than the level we released them at.
We did give Dixon a free. He went to Chester and they gave him a free. He went to Bury and then to Stoke for peanuts. No doubt that he went on to have an outstanding career but Dixon himself has said that he probably deserved those free transfers at the time.
Sonner did well eventually but on leaving Burnley he then played for SC Viktoria 04 Köln, BFC Preussen and Erzgebirge Aue before suddenly returning to England with Ipswich, Sheff Wed & Birmingham. He’d been a striker at Burnley but succeeded as a midfielder.
Pugh played at a lower level than we were at until 2013/14. He only ever spent one season at a level higher than us.

Re: Ollie Norwood
I remember Danny Sonner getting a hat-trick against Wigan in the reserves many moons ago. It was Burnley's first hat-trick in any game for a while - I think it was still some time before Graham Lancashire got his hat-trick in the first team (away at Wrexham?)
