Re: Sir Lindsay Hoyle
Well done that man he's had to wait in the wings, well Bercow held the reins for almost a decade,of course this means he'll contest Chorley as the Speaker seeking re-election and not the Labour candidate.
The SNP might not be so happy, just reading his Wiki page and i noted these points.
In February 2017, Hoyle told off SNP MPs for singing the European Anthem during the vote for the Brexit Bill in the House of Commons, stating that he does not want parliament to turn into a sing-off. The same night, he had a clash with former Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, in a heated exchange over whether he had cut off an SNP MP while speaking.
I suspect Hoyle will be a lower-profile Speaker than Bercow, mind you that wouldn't be hard.

I’ve had a pint with him in the Strangers bar and in a short time he appeared a decent bloke.
At the same session I had a pint with Nigel Evans and so did he.
Which just proves just how good politicians are at selling themselves.
Good luck to him in that madhouse.

Maybe a cynical ploy then as the Tories realise they might need every vote possible in the Commons.Imploding Turtle wrote:I'm sure. It's just weird that they couldn't find a Tory good enough to do the job.

Hopefully, regardless of the way he voted in 2016 and despite whether he wants to leave or stay, he does what the last one didn't and remains impartial like he should do. And like the last one should've done, but didn't.
Good riddance to John 'look at me everyone' Bercow. Much preferred him when he was famous for being married to a tart.

All Bercow has done is stick to Parliamentary procedure. It was never his job to get brexit through. The fact that his rulings don’t align with the outcome you desired doesn’t mean he has been a poor speaker.bobinho wrote:Hopefully, regardless of the way he voted in 2016 and despite whether he wants to leave or stay, he does what the last one didn't and remains impartial like he should do. You will, because traditionally the speaker's seat is not contested. Can't see the Tories breaking with convention and standing against him.chorleyhere wrote:A very good constituency MP but sadly we may not have him as MP anymore?

I prefer to think he's been a poor speaker for his role in the expenses scandal, the way he flipped his primary residence for tax avoidance, and for his alleged bullying and sexual harassment of parliamentary aides.Tricky Trevor wrote:All Bercow has done is stick to Parliamentary procedure. Apart from that, he's a fine, upstanding, MP with impeccable morals.

Bercow is not well-liked at all. The paradox is that the smarmy little ego-tripper will almost definitely be "elevated" to the Lord's and permanent place on the gravy train he has so much enjoyed.

Re: Sir Lindsay Hoyle
The bullying and sexual harassment, if true, is reprehensible. The tax avoidance is done by everybody who has an opportunity. The expenses scandal I’m not up on, it seems a while ago now.None of them were my point. Which is that whilst sat in the chair he has stuck to parliamentary procedure, even if some of the rulings appear ludicrous.Sausage wrote:I prefer to think he's been a poor speaker for his role in the expenses scandal, the way he flipped his primary residence for tax avoidance, and for his alleged bullying and sexual harassment of parliamentary aides.

I think at best he has interpreted parliamentary procedure. It seems that there have been more pluses than minuses the way he has gone about things listening to those in the know on't box

Re: Sir Lindsay Hoyle
The thing that Bercow's critics often fail to point out is that he happened to be the speaker at a time when the government of the day acted in an unprecedented fashion, such as attempting to bypass parliament completely, holding parliament in contempt and by attempting to shut down parliament for a prolonged period under the guise of a Queen’s speech.
Even if the speaker had been someone other than John Bercow, they still would have been put in a position where they needed to act to defend parliament because of the disgraceful conduct of the government. Granted, someone else might not have been as strong as him, but that would have been disastrous for our parliamentary democracy is they hadn’t been.

Convention means nothing when you are happy to lie to the Queen and shut down the Houses of Parliament.nil_desperandum wrote:You will, because traditionally the speaker's seat is not contested. Can't see the Tories breaking with convention and standing against him.
But if you are on the blue team, I'm sure you'll find a way to justify that.

I’m pleased there is a positive outcome on a human level for someone who has suffered so much pain and grief. Im sure he we be a good choice.

Re: Sir Lindsay Hoyle
This is true, but it would be a pretty spectacular own goal for the "blues" to field a candidate against a popular MP who has a great deal of support and sympathy cross-party due to his daughter's death, and who would (I'm confident) win comfortably anyway.Lancasterclaret wrote:Convention means nothing when you are happy to lie to the Queen and shut down the Houses of Parliament.

Sounds like he has the perfect qualifications for such an important role. His 2nd wife was his Secretary until he got divorced and he supports Bolton Wanderers !!

Just for the record, Sir Lindsay still is married to his second wife Catherine and they celebrated their silver wedding last year and who is his part-time secretary.
He still acts as MP for Chorley.
