Mobile phones on trains

Post by chekhov » Tue Nov 05, 2019 11:35 am

I wonder if it is just me. Every time I hear someone on the train playing a video or music through their phone’s inbuilt speaker I have the irresistible urge to go over and tell them to turn it off. And I can’t help myself, I feel this indignant rage rising inside me, and I just go over there and tell them (I try to be polite, mind). It’s not got to fisticuffs just yet, but usually I hear the noise before I see who I’m dealing with!
Anyone else feel the same?

I think of myself as quite a chilled sort of guy but people being insensitive in this area definitely triggers me!

Always - the world is so much ruder these days (or I am older)
- once (in the quite coach)I was told I was anti-gay for my troubles
- another time I guy got on the train with a huge pair of cans round his neck proceeded to set-up speakers around his gaming laptop on a table - I corrected his approach by telling him there were other people sharing the table too and given he obviously had earphones with him he should just jack in - everyone at the table agreed

I don't understand why people want others to hear what they are listening to. I often also think that those who play music through speakers are trying to create conflict - much like adults cycling on footpaths - they want someone to say something so they can be `offended' and start.

If i ever used trains and had this problem then I'd probably go and sit next to them as if I was a new passenger who's just got on and then get out the phone and start watching something with a high enough volume. Or go and do it just behind/in front of them, as to disturb them watching their video. I wonder what their reaction would be? Point proven!

It's definitely rude to make a din like that on crowded public transport. I'm very deaf (and dont usually wear hearing aids on public transport if I'm alone) but often find it annoying; goodness knows how annoying it is if you have good hearing.
I usually "have a word" (depending on how relaxed or otherwise I am at the time) but that does involve a risk of escalation.

Whilst sat in the main reception are in Croydon's main hospital last week a young Polish "scally" sat next to me and proceeded to play Polish music over his phone.

I put up with it for a while, getting all the more frustrated at today's youth, until he got up and made his way towards the public piano. He then proceeded to play the most amazing classical music for a while until sitting down and resuming his Polish ditties.

I saw him in a different light after that and felt bad for pre-judging

Nice story Croydon, though I think you are correct to judge him no matter how well he plays the piano!

I feel this.

Absolute ******* hate of mine. That and smelly foods. ******* Doritos on any kind of public transport should warrant amputation not only of fingers but also head.

That would be terrible for the environment. Better to throw the mobile phone users out of the window - at least they will biodegrade.

Just recalling the Curb clip when Larry, annoyed by someone on their phone, starts talking loudly to himself

Users of headphones should need to pass a test and apply for a licence

The thing that gets me us there's plenty of in ear "iem type" earphones people can use but they insist on using either the loud tinny ear bud type you get with your phone or even worse, open back headphones that are like wearing speakers on your head.

Not only that but they have the volume very high, so high they will for certain damage their hearing.

There was another thread which queried the use of disabled toilets. I was going to post a link to a Curb episode where Larry does battle with a wheelchair user. Very funny.

Even worse if they have their feet up on the seat. Got no respect.
