Pope is 1234
England are now allocating legacy numbers for debut appearances
Turns out Pope was the 1234th player to make his debut
Oh and he’s also in the squad for next set of games

Re: Pope is 1234
I think Jack Yates was our earliest, 165, he played one game against Ireland in 1899 and scored a hat-trick.
The most infamous was Jack Hillman, 242, who was banned for the whole of the 1900/01 season for trying to bribe Notts Forest players in the last game of the previous season to enable Burnley to avoid relegation.

Pope Gregory IX was Pope in 1234...
Apparently Gregory IX promulgated the Decretals in 1234, a code of canon law that remained the fundamental source of ecclesiastical law for the Catholic Church until after World War I.

Well mate I was thinking of trying to make some sort of joke about the Pope but you beat me to it with a serious piece of info. The problem lies in you uncovering yet another conspiracy. Pope? 1234? This cannot be a coincidence! Marrying up two things like that will have the wrath of the entire Catholic church rain down on you from high. It seems they have been waiting for the right moment to unleash the second coming and that was to have been shortly after Pope 1234 appeared. Now you have exploded their plot. Move house quickly Boss and change your name - it's the only thing that will save you. Killer monks are unstoppable.Bosscat wrote:Pope Gregory IX was Pope in 1234...

A couple of notable others are Jay Rod (1200) and Danny Ings (1211), although both of them won their International caps after leaving Burnley. I think we had 28 players honoured for England WHILST playing for Burnley but I'm quite happy to be corrected on that figure.

90% (exageration) of the players mentioned in this thread don't currently play for Burnley and quite a few never have or will

There has been a precedent and remarkably it involved two Burnley players. In the England game against Austria in 1961 both John Angus and Brian Miller made their England debuts, Angus has been allocated 796 and Miller 797.

All the reports suggest he did try, Helmshore. But he paid with one hell of a price, a full season ban in 1900/01.Helmshore Claret wrote:According to the Burnley records he failed,as we lost 4-0; but, at least,he tried!
As you rightly say he failed and we suffered relegation as a consequence. It was not until the 1913/14 season that we resumed our place in Division One and by that time Hillman was long gone.

Re: Pope is 1234
Have to say the one thing the FA have highlighted to me in this legacy numbers exercise is the yawning gap between Martin Dobson (893) in 1974 and Tom Heaton (1216) in 2016..........Was there really a gap of 42 years during which no Burnley player made his debut for England ?
In the previous 75 years from 1899 to 1974 we had, I think, 24 players representing England and of course we've had three since 2016, Nick, Jack & Tarks.

For the benefit of said loony I'll endeavor to explain. The only relationship between me and Steve is that we were mates about 40-odd years ago and we used to go the Turf with a gang of us back in the days of flairs and loons. We haven't been in the same room for over 40 years and the only reason we found out who we both were on here is because Steve guessed it from some references I made and from my username (which reflects my rather unusual surname). You and I Boss have never (to the best of my knowledge) met but know each other from the Lancashire Telegraph Burnley forum, where I was known as Houseclaret, a name I couldn't use on here because it was 'taken'.
The fact that we have the same sense of humour and have the same or similar tastes in music has probably more to do with being a similar age than being joined at the hip.
So I hope that clears it up. To the gentleman who has paranoia may I suggest a good psychiatrist.
Now I'll just go on to my other accounts and make similar denials.
