Goalkeepers scoring goals

Post by ayrshireclaret83 » Thu Nov 07, 2019 3:10 pm

Just seen that Adam Legzedins has just scored a late equaliser in the under 23 game today.

Have we ever had a keeper score before?

Gary Sprake did it regularly - unfortunately it was in his own net.

Remember seeing Bolton’s keeper score against us at a windy Burnden Park.

Think Jimmy Glass who scored the famous last minute winner that kept Carlisle in the league a few years ago was a former loanee at Burnley if that counts.

Think Jimmy Glass scored 2 didnt he, or is that just a myth?

I'm sure Schmeichel scored 2, one for Man Utd, 1 for Villa, but is there any other goalkeepers with more than a single goal in the English leagues

( I know that goalkeeper who took free kicks and pens for Paraguay scored plenty )

Jose luis chilavert. One of my favourite all time players.

Rogerio Ceni was even more lethal at club level. 65 goals.

It was and it was. McDonough spent a while at Boro as Jim and then reverted to Irish and became Seamus. Bad day for Billy RIP.

Well he must also have 2, as he scored for Spurs too from a long punt from a free kick outside his box.

Pat Jennings scored
Sky were showing the Begovic goal he scored last week.

One of the South American teams had a keeper who scored loads of goals - can’t remember which one or his name (begins with C....chivez ?).....might have been Paraguay or Peru ?

Like a number of posters on here I was at Burnden Park that day. When the first attempt by McDonagh sailed just over the bar it was a case of waiting for the inevitable next attempt on a very windy day and once the ball bounced there was only one place it was going to end up. A dreadful performance which resulted in the 'sacking' of Brian Miller, the appointment of Frank Casper and four days later that remarkable 1-4 victory in the league cup at Spurs.
Pat Jennings also mentioned as a goalscorer and I was at that Charity Shield game at Old Trafford on a wet August Saturday in 1967 with mates from school. We were stood in the Stretford End and again we could see that when the ball bounced Alex Stepney was in 'no man's land' at the other end of the ground as the ball flew above his head and into the goal. Put Spurs 0-2 up in 10 mins. but the game ended 3-3. Not too disappointed then but could have been better.

I saw Harry Thompson score against Chorley and Morecambe, both in the Lancs Senior Cup away in the 60s. Not sure if they were in the same season, without digging out the records.

Just thinking back to the Chorley game, I think that Paul Mariner, who moved to Ipswich and also played England, was in their team. (he did play once for Chorley against us). I got to know Paul during his Burnley radio match day commentaries and he was a genuinely nice person.

Mariner would have been aged 10 or 11 when Harry scored at Chorley

The pic below was on the hoardings outside the new stadium when we played at White Hart Lane in December 2016. It is taken after Robinson’s goal for Spurs.

Mariner was born in May 1953 and went on to sign for Plymouth in 1973, before moving to Ipswich. I'm sure someone will know the year of LSC tie. It may have been the 1964/65 season.

Did it finish 3-0? I was only about 14 at the time and my dad was friends with some Bolton fans who gave us a lift. I remember it being a particularly miserable trip home as they proper rubbed in how awful we’d been.

I'd have to check, but 3-0 sounds about right and us not having a single shot at goal!!

3-0 it was. A low point in a low point league season.

It was definitely 3-0 and it was a shocking performance just after we thought we might be recovering with a home win against Sheffield Wednesday and then a draw against Middlesbrough. There have been suggestions that McDonough had nearly scored with one previous effort, I thought the one that went in was the third with the other two just going over the bar.

Miller went before the next match and so did O'Rourke.

I thought McDonough had already tried twice before he scored with his third attempt. You could see it coming, unfortunately Billy down at the far end couldn't and we had to endure JM celebrating a goal against us in his own penalty area in front of the Burnley fans. As has been said previously, a truly dreadful performance that led to the departure of Brian Miller and one of the most memorable games in my years of supporting Burnley - the 1-4 victory away at WHL and that after going 1 down to I think a Terry Gibson goal...

Skimmed through and haven't seen it, but didn't Chris Woods used to take penalties for Rangers at one point?
