Nat King Cole

Post by 4:20 » Thu Nov 07, 2019 7:26 pm

For the past few weeks, whenever i load up YouTube on my laptop, this video plays automatically,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk51-vjcZ-Y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
At first i was like "who put this there and why is it loading up every time i want to use YouTube?", my wife began to laugh after a few days as she'd hear the opening bars ring out from my lap a few times a night and i jokingly used to say "Bloody Nat and that bloody song".....and yet I've grown to absolutely love the guy, seriously think his voice is like the best tiramisu in the world singing to me, i've spent hours going through various performances and i'm hooked, the guy is amazing. I think this is the year where i really start to listen to the crooners of the era, i'm so unfamiliar with the genre. Has anyone got a favourite? who would you recommend for me to get into next?

Christmas would not be Christmas without his Christmas album. I’m on about my sixth copy of it.

Fabulous performer but Frank takes some beating.
I’m also a massive Gordon MacRae fan. Albums are difficult to find but thankfully I can download from youtube. There were some truly incredible singers around in the 40s and 50s, when the voice came before the band.

My first child is due in December and i've had quite a bad month health wise, i broke a rib falling down the stairs 4 weeks back and last Sunday I needed to go to hospital for emergency treatment concerning my Crohns disease. I'm still in hospital now and have had a lot of time to think. It's all positive mental attitude, I played 'The Very Thought Of You' and thought of my daughter as the song played and it made me cry happy tears. I find it wonderful when music can help to do that.

Firstly, hope things are better for you health wise soon and you can look forward to the baby next month.

Music can have a wonderful effect at times. I must confess I’ve not listened to Nat King Cole in a long time. He was one of my dad’s favourite singers.

Not very PC, but the great man had a 60 a-day smoking habit, and died at 45 of lung cancer. In his thirties, he tried to give up the " gaspers ", but it affected his voice, so he resumed ...

Al Bowlly was considered to be the first British crooner, though he was born in South Africa. He was was extremely popular during the late 30s and into the war years. He actually died during the war during a Nazi air raid on London. Definitely worth a listen to get a "British" perspective on early crooning.

Just a brilliant singer who I could listen to all day is Bobby Darin. Absolutely oozes class and refinement. Died far too early but his music lives on and I would highly recommend him to you.
PS. When you hear him sing 'Mack the knife' I think you'll know what I mean.

Nat King Cole velvet voice, truly marvellous. If its passion your after Jacques Brel makes Shirley Bassey seem nonchalant.
