Is it the one that was on last year do you know ?

If so, it's very moving and poignant. Thoroughly recommend it.

Just checked it out on the schedule and it is the same one where old B&W footage has been
painstakingly converted to colour and sound added, including the spoken word of those being filmed,
courtesy of a host of lip readers.

Very clever indeed.

Absolutely amazing film, and incredibly realistic and moving.
Thoroughly recommended but extremely clumsy / careless of them to misquote Laurence Binyon's famous line, (from "For the Fallen") in the film's title. Probably just my age, but I find that things like that really irritate me nowadays.

Corrected now.

For the Fallen
By Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Yes, you've corrected it, but the title of the film remains wrong, which is pretty unforgivable really.
Who checks these things?
Thanks for posting the full poem BTW. Hopefully many on here will read it.

It certainly didn't sugarcoat the conflict,and nor should it,this was a brutal pointless war,which led to the deaths of millions of young men on each side,plus the number of amputees and the survivors who suffered shell-shock were numerous.

When you say everyone should see it,do you include schoolchildren in that,as it's definitely not for the squeamish.

If it puts them off future wars, then yes.

Fair point,sadly a future war on that scale will likely involve nuclear and chemical warfare,and not close hand-to-hand combat trench warfare.

I'd suggest the politicians also watch this film,and consider the consequences of their decisions very carefully,and only deploy military action as a last resort,once all the diplomatic avenues have been exhausted.

Many thanks, Leisure, for the heads-up.
I have read widely on the subject of WWI over the years and seen numerous other films and documentaries, but last night's was perhaps the most profound of all, and utterly compelling.
The stunning sound and colour improvisation managed to bring all that century-old b&w footage so incredibly to life that it really seemed as if the events were in fact recent, and almost that I was actually there as an observer rather than sitting in a comfy chair here at home.
A truly phenomenal and groundbreaking piece of work, which clearly I should have watched last year. It would be great if a similar job could be done with regard to the air war, and that at sea, in due course.
