4K TV

Post by Granny WeatherWax » Sun Nov 10, 2019 2:34 pm

Late to the party on both counts but I’ve just got Sky Q and now would like a 4K TV to go with it.

Do any of you tech savvy folk have any recommendations?

I don’t want anything too massive, you know the ones all the proles spend their benefits on whilst living off beans and fags, but other than that I’m pretty open minded.

Thanks in advance.

LG OLED look really good, but a bit pricey.
Wish I could afford one, that's the one I'd go for.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I was going to wait until Black Friday to purchase but wanted to gather ideas beforehand.

Don’t want to spend anything north of a grand.

They do look impressive but don’t want to spend that much on a tv.

I got a 55" 4k Hisense last year for £360 on Prime Day last year. Very happy with it, big, bright and good picture.

Pop down to a store and look at some TVs, decide if you definitely want a speicifc bell or whistle. Eg: OLED, Dolby Atmos.
Even the budget models have smart functions now, so have access to Netflix, iPlayer etc direct from the TV.

Cheers for the advice. I’ll nip to my local John Lewis next weekend given we have no game.

Are there enough 4k shows broadcast to justify the outlay? Or do they improve the HD picture?
Wondered this for a while.
The picture quality in stores is phenomenal.

It’s ever increasing, loads of stuff on Netflix and Prime.

You can pick up a decent for about £500 from what I’ve read so not expensive anymore either.

I've got a HiSense one and it's good. Exceptional for the price.

Tons of 4k content on Netflix, YouTube, and there are plenty of downloads to be had too.

The BBC iPlayer can also show 4k stuff too, if you choose Beta mode. The latest Attenborough doc is 4k on there, and the Cup final is always shown in 4k too.

There's not really any point going 4k unless you get a big TV, so I'd definitely recommend a 55", a 65" would be better.

Mate 4k is the biggest scam going. You're eyes won't be able to detect the difference bud. Plus there ain't that much 4k content unless you're willing to splash the big bucks. Listen, The big electronics are cashing in on the general public being gullible and ill informed. Common everyman punters, salt of the earth...happy with a pie and pint. Thankfully there are more clued up people who are more evolved than your average punter, pioneers who are there to step in and inform the everyman. Otherwise the big retailers and electronics companies would continue to revel in the act of taking candy from a baby.

Is it just me that finds the picture viewing experience of 4K not very pleasant? It’s like watching tv in a fishbowl

Are you talking about the ‘soap opera effect’ which makes it look like you’re actually on set? Turn that feature off - it’s hideous. I think different TV manufacturers will have different names but it’s called Motion Smoothing or something similar.

I do actually have a Sony 4K - bought it from Richer Sounds. It replaced a 10 year old Sony 1080i that only had one HDMI port.

BTW: Richer Sounds throw in a 6 year warranty.

Richer Sounds is the place to go for sound advice and good service. They also price match so if you find a product cheaper online they’ll sort you out.

Edit - no pun intended with ‘sound advice’.

If you are not bothered other than 4k then Akdi and Lidl were offering 4ks at very competitive prices. Various sizes.

I use Samsung.

Went to see 8k in Currys, to see what difference, as there are no 8k prongs. They were showing something which wasn't even 4k!
Idiots!

I have to disagree. To watch 1080P you’re optimum viewing distance for a 46” tv is about 10’ whereas for a 55” 4K it is about 7’ . You get to sit closer with 4K so it is much more immersive. Obviously you need the right content too, and the tv needs setting up properly.

Switching from HD to Ultra HD on SKY Sports is definitely better than HD. Quite what 8k will be like, God knows but the current prices are in the small house bracket and with no guarantee that by the 8k content is produced in volume, that the 8k TV’s will be running the right software.

What I would like to know - why the bloody hell do Sky still have BBC 1 HD on the second page and SD as number 1.

This is the Sky HD box, not Sky Q, but come on. It's 2019. HD should be default for every channel by now, especially BBC 1!

It’s because they still deem HD to be a premium item to charge for

One thing I will say about the Sony OLEDs is that they're completely immesrsive. Crouched in front of them watching Ultimate Whitecream it's actually like you're in the scene, even at 1080p. I really should buy one for myself.. I think the guys in Curry's are getting a bit fed up

Not sure about SKY HD but on SKY Q BBC 1 HD is on channel number 1 (as opposed to 101 or 115). Works for BBC 2 and ITV too but for some strange reason, channel 4 is on number 5.

Terrestrial HD Channels are not paid services on SKY

Lads, calm down please eh. 4k doesn't even come in 3D. So even if the difference in quality WAS noticeable to the naked eye I couldn't have a 4K TV for that reason. Mate, 3D bluray is the ONLY way to experience movies. Listen....the 4K revolution didn't embrace this.. And for that reason.. with all due respect fellas.. I'm out.
