A fearful strike force.

Post by Bullabill » Mon Nov 11, 2019 8:56 am

I have just watched a replay of the W.Ham match and the commentator (I didn't get his name but he was working with Keith Andrews) described the Barnes/Wood pairing as 'A fearful strike force'.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Think it was Rob Palmer.

He was heaping praise on them all game, but did have the expected complete opposite views on the West ham goalkeeper and defence.

Someone on Sky recording described Barnes and Wood as...... The Bruise Brothers ! which I thought was rather clever

When they are on their A Game, they are a utter menace to most defences in this League. If A centre back shows any sign of weakness, or not being up for a scrap, then they are mercilessly pulverised.

One of the main reasons for their success and effectiveness this season thus far has been the excellence of Dwight McNeil who has looked a constant threat and has provided numerous assists.

How effective and potent they will be without him remains to be seen.

That cross for Wood's disallowed goal was a thing of beauty.
Best cross of a ball since Tripps left.
If he can keep producing that quality of ball, and there is no reason to think he cant, we should be in for an enjoyable season.

Fearful has two meanings...

Fearful .... Scared, frightened ........

Or

Fearful .... Striking fear into opponents/others .........

Teams defences don't like playing against our front two as they are definitely more the latter rather than the former.

Guardian agrees with this: "Dwight McNeil has been a revelation since being thrown into the deep end midway through last season, and this was perhaps his finest game yet. The 19-year-old identified his opponents’ achilles heel – the painfully hesitant keeper Roberto – and went about exposing it in brutal fashion, wasting no opportunity to lash a cross into the West Ham box. He delivered 12 in total, two of which ended up in the back of the net, with the sort of no-frills wing-play that is the stuff of dreams for Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood."

I read somewhere that McNeil is in the top four for 'teenage assists' in Europe. That's some claim if true. Actually I think it was the 'big 7' leagues in Europe, which I suppose is all that matters. :D

He's actually joint second in the PL regardless of age.

"Fearsome" would be a better word.

I'm interested to know why you didn't agree Bill. "Couldn't be further from the truth"

Perhaps just a mis-interpretation of their use of the word 'fearful'?

Only Bullabill will know.

Already been effective and potent before McNeil played in the first team.
