A straight swap would give them nothing.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:39 pmStraight swap Gibson for Fry would make sense. Gibbo is too good to be a bench warmer, Fry could come in and improve under SDs defensive coaching. One for the future.

Trading players isn’t just about the here and now. If we identify a player currently worth £10m and think that he has the potential to develop into a £30m player then it’s a viable investment. That doesn’t mean we aren’t also looking to strengthen in other positions.SGr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:29 pmAnd just as I say that, here’s the Nixon news. Dael Fry.

Can’t help but laugh if this is true really. The sheer mental gymnastics required to look at our performances and our squad and decide that what we’re lacking is a centre half.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Would have liked to see us bring in someone capable of playing as a right wing back and go 3 at the back with Taylor as a left wing back, enabling Gibson to come into the team and see McNeil have more of a free role going forward. Hard to watch a player who had so much potential as Gibson did , to come and go without showing his capabilities. I’m all for improving the squad and Fry would do that, but midfield simply isn’t good enough and hearing that Brownhill would more likely be a summer move is another dampener on our chances of improving that area. We surely can’t be going the rest of the season with Cork Westwood and Hendrick as our only options.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
You’re quite right. But right now we need players who are good enough for the first team. I’m hearing zero interest in Bowen, a player who would genuinely improve us at the same time I’m hearing we’re in for a young Middlesbrough centre half who won’t see a league start this season should we sign him.Rileybobs wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:51 pmTrading players isn’t just about the here and now. And if we spend £10m on a footballer we don’t actually need in the XI, do you genuinely think there’s still £20m left to spend on an actual first teamer? It’s been 2 1/2 years since the last one.

I remember when we signed Gibson the Boro forum was full of "Fry is a far better player"
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Fry to be bought & loan them Gibson with a view to a sale of a CB (or two) in summer? That'd give them some income now & us for the summer window.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:45 pmWouldn't make sense to Middlesbrough who will be wanting to balance the books again because of FFP. Super Sunday Fry up as Dael Fry watches Burnley claw back to beat the foxes 4-3 in a thriller at turf moor. Reunion set to be on the cards which will see Ben Gibson and Dael Fry partner in defence at old Trafford as Tarkowski looks to complete his medical on the coach back to Leicester and Ben Mee ruled out for the season.

You have obviously watched a lot of Bowen as oppose to 30 second highlights on a football league show once a week how come going off reports only Leeds are looking at him ? Is there only us in the premier league who he’s good enough for or need someone who can single handed keep a team up it seems ?

If Gibson goes then we do need a CB. The question is whether Fry, being only 22, would be more willing to be on the conveyor belt to replace Tarks when he eventually leaves, and accept he'll spend most of this season at least, on the bench.

No problem with us being interested in Fry. We need a potential long term replacement for Tarks at the top level and succession planning for that role is important.
Doesn't remove the need for midfield reinforcements but we shouldn't complain at sorting one requirement because we haven't sorted another.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Exactly. Providing it doesn't prevent us from signing a player from another position (which let's be fair is unlikely if Gibson left and Fry came in as we're likely to lower our wage bill), then it's fine. We'd be bringing in a bright young player and letting go someone who wants regular first team football.

Spot on. This is the sort of thing we did well with Keane and Tarks and others and for some reason we stopped. Tarky may go this summer even if we stay up. Also, its pretty clear that Gibson will be gone this year.claretspice wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 8:52 amNo problem with us being interested in Fry. However, we must do something about cm now, albeit months if not years late. That will mean taking a calculated financial risk. There are several reasons, including:-
We need a min. of 4 cm obviously.
Hendrick and particularly Westwood are probably going to get 10 bookings.
Apart from Westwood's delivery into the box, we have minimal creativity from cm.
A change is system may be needed, as we are now too predictable. That would mean starting with 3 in cm, and therefore no sub for cm.
Don't underestimate the transformation in fan attitude on the ground if an appropriate cm signed and then started.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Fry is a fine signing, theres already speculation regarding Tarks leaving, and if that does happen in the summer and we net 40-50m, then surely it's better to have his replacement here and upto speed ready to slot straight in.
Also doing it now for say 10m, who's to say if Tarky left for the aforementioned figures the fee doesnt jump to 15-20m for a replacement as other clubs will want a slice of our fortune.
I'm all for forward planning with younger players, it has to be the model.
I'll never knock the club for that.
On a side note, who's to say IF we sign Fry , Long could depart, there was interest in him in the summer, we could get a few quid for him.
He is a international and premier league footballer if only on paper.
I must add it cant be at the expense of a CM, Forward or a wide man.
We need ( and I think we will ) sign at least 2 additions.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
I'm sure Fry will have a word with Gibson before he comes here.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Or a shot at the premier league if Tarky either gets injured or moves on in the summer.
Tgese so called sports stars dont seem too upset to sit and observe, especially if you've doubled your wages.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Fry in and Gibson to Boro on loan would be a good bit of business but it still doesn't address our more urgent problems in midfield and up front.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Sounds a plausible acquisition with Gibson exchanged, with us picking up some wages, perhaps.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Fry plays in the centre of a back three/five or the centre right of a back four. Gibson plays on the left which is why he is the backup for Mee.
Gibson is a quality player and people doubting him simply because he hasn't had a chance to play is unfair. Swapping him for Fry wouldn't make much sense and if he wanted to go back to Boro they would have accepted a bid in the Summer.
10m isn't exactly cheap for a player who might be able to step up in a position we that don't need to urgently address at the moment. It would only be conceivable if Tarks or Long were asking to leave.
I think everyone is in agreement about what we need in this window and it isn't a central defender.
However, we could look at Hulls Robbie McKenzie as one for the future. He isn't up to playing in the top tier, but he looked okay last year, showed a bit of promise. He is out out contract this year ( I think ) and Hull have a pronounced policy of not playing those who aren't going to commit to the club unless they are essential. He has only played a few games this season and those have been at right back, because someone at Hull seems to think he has what it takes to become a right back ( which he probably doesn't ). I can't see him costing that much, a million if they really try and squeeze us for every penny.
Vegas Claret mentioned Fidalgo at Real Madrid Castilla awhile back and I have watched quite a bit of them. Fidalgo is a good player, but he fits into their system of pass and play. I don't think he would fit our squad and the way we play.
However, they do have a couple of good young defenders like Javi Sanchez ( left sided central defender ) and Javier Hernández Carrera ( left back ). I can't see them parting with Sergio Lopez who is their best defender ( right back ).
They also have a good keeper, Javier Belman, who is being given the short end of the stick. Zinedine Zidane, who is the Real Madrid manager, is throwing all of the opportunities at his son Luca Zidane who isn't as good. I can't really imagine Belman signing a new contract with a barrier like that in his way and our reputation for training keepers must be a good draw for players.
All three of those players are in the last year of their contracts and Castilla are always looking to offload players before the end of the season.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Shankland is playing in the second tier of Scottish football, Robertson played in the first. He reputedly turned down offers to come to England in the last window, probably preferring to remain a big fish in a little pond. When he played in the first tier for Aberdeen he was a bit of a flop.Dixie Normous wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 4:52 pmI’d bid for Lawrence Shankland who is banging them in for Dundee United . In terms of youngsters we could look at Sebastien Soto ( who would represent something of a wild card punt ). He has played for the American Junior teams at every level and it doesn't seem like he has any real interest in signing a new contract with Hannover.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/06/ ... -salt-lake
https://www.espn.com/soccer/united-stat ... e-hannover
I'm not sure if we could swing a work permit and he doesn't strike me as an ideal candidate for English football.
However, he could come good and having a player on the cusp of the American National Team could pay dividends in terms of our exposure in the American market if he does break through.
The choice pick in terms of young and out of contract strikers would probably be Moussa Sylla of Monaco, who is currnetly out of favour and out of the team at Monaco.
https://www.footballwhispers.com/blog/t ... ussa-sylla
I still think Kovalenko is the player that we should be actively chasing after in this window though. I'm not going to list his qualities, because give or take a couple of things that I slightly disagree on, these articles are pretty near the mark about him from what I've seen.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS Jan 2020(MUST CONTAIN LINK)
When we get the points required for survival, I would like us to start playing three at the back. It makes sense as Dyche likes his centre backs and I trust his judgement completely in that position. With what we have now, Long can come in on the right or go with Bardsley until Sean gets someone else into the club. I’m assuming SD and Gibson may have had words but if not that’s another option or maybe Fry. If it’s Fry he could challenge Ben Mee. Of course we need a midfielder(s) to protect our centre backs, or be creative or be a goal threat and of course we need to freshen up the squad.
