Well he wouldn't be earning as much in the lower leagues, would likely have had inferior training facilities/coaching staff and maybe wouldn't have been a regular in the Republic of Ireland squad for the past three years. Overall I'd say he's had a pretty good career.

Pretty good career ??? I'm not slagging Long off but I'd say he's had a bit part career and picked up a wage than a good career. Ben Mee has been at Burnley for almost 9 years and played just short of 300 games that's a good career.

Kevin Long's stats over ten season's at Burnley is a grand total of 48 part and full league games averaging 4.8 games a season and the full total counting all cup games ect comes in at a massive 66 part and full games averaging 6.6 games a season over ten years.

His total career whilst at Burnley including his loans out and Burnley games is part and full games 162 games averaging 16.2 games per season.

He's played amost 100 more games for other team's whilst at Burnley than for us and he's not been loaned out for 4 years, and over that 4 year period he's played in 25 part and full games in the league and that figure is only that high because he played 16 games in one season.

Gibson linked with a loan move to Watford:

Thought to include an option to buy.
Apparently the Club have rejected that bid thus far

Kevin Long has rarely let us down.
He may have only played 160 plus times but that’s 160 more than any of us.
He’s made himself a good life and living out of doing something he loves.

I don't think the debate is whether Long is ok as a 4th choice centre half and whether he has ever let us down. The debate is that if Gibson went and then either Mee or Tarkowski got a lengthy injury, how comfortable would we all be with Long and Dunne making the step up for a significant run of games?

I wouldn't be confident at all. An odd game here and there for Kevin Long and he has done ok in the past. Anything more and we are asking for trouble, imo.

He is happy to be a 4th choice centre half (which is why he keeps signing contracts) and we seem happy to have him as a 4th choice centre half. If Gibson left he would need replacing (whether that's this window or in the summer).

A hell of a lot more than you or any of us.
Why are you critical of someone who is doing something most of us would give our right arm for and earning loads of money for doing it ? How he chooses to play out his career has got nothing to do with us. If it didn’t suit him or Burnley then he wouldn’t be here.
Is there anything at all you can’t find to criticise the club about ? Who next ? The kitman ?

A lot of speculation from the Turkish media on twitter that Fenerbache has turned down a €28M offer for Vedat Muriqi. (The one Dyche laughed off)

Seems odd when he's been linked with UTD & Spurs - Strange one.

The average first team salary at Burnley these days is about £2 million. I'm sure Kev will be able to dip into his savings to help take his mind off his lack of game time whilst he was playing.

Of course they are and my opinion is what is there to be critical of about someone who has not done anything wrong by choosing to stay at the club ?
It also comes from a poster who does not have a good word to say about a club he supposedly “supports”.

I don’t think Dyche has any desire to leave Long as our 3rd choice centre back either - he didn’t when we signed Gibson. So if Gibson goes I’m sure another CB will be brought in.

And so he should im not a professional footballer i work in finance - im not critical its just that if i was him i would have gone long ago to have a career and play football regulary in a league below - you know playing every week - maybe that says something about him as well.

Long is clearly happy picking up a good wage and not playing, so fair play to him, he's a perfect 4th choice centre back for us. Whether he looks back on his career in 20 or 30 years time and regrets not playing more is a different matter.

lets not forget that being a pro footballer isn't just about the 90 minutes once or twice a week - these days a squad player has to do everything the first team does in terms of fitness and performance and all the sport science stuff too and he is paid accordingly. Perhaps he enjoys being the reliable back up option and it may suit him. He's been a fantastic servant to the club and I respect him for that.

He will be happy, picking up about 5 million pound in wages for not playing much football in his career.

Depends what positions we are prioritising.

If we’re selling Gibson to help fund a new CM, or RB/RW, then I’m fine with that, because you could argue we’re more desperate in those positions than having 4 CB’s, 5 including Dunne.

Yes, it’s a risk having Long as 3rd choice if Gibson goes, but it’s no more of a risk than being so short in CM.

I don't know Kev Long's personal life but I think people forget that professional footballers are human beings.

He may choose to stay as 4th choice as he now has family / kids / friends here and doesn't want to uproot / leave them, Likes where he lives and doesn't fancy moving etc.

He could also be one of those players who doesn't really like the game but just happens to be good enough at it to earn a very good living and therefore isn't bothered whether he plays regularly or not.

Maybe he enjoys his work environment and is happy to stay and challenge or may be he simply know he won't be able to match his salary elsewhere?

At the end of of the day it is his choice and is a good thing for our club that we have someone like him as a back-up. Win Win.

I don’t understand the negativity towards Kevin Long, I think he’s been a great servant and has never let us down when called upon, the only time I’d say he’s ever looked out of his depth was the Kane hat trick at the Turf.

Every club needs players like Long, an able deputy, never thrown his toys out of the pram.

I wouldn't underestimate Long's value to training sessions. We play with physical centre forwards and it wouldn't surprise me if Long is regularly used as Barnes' battering ram in training.

The reality is that not many club's 4th choice centre back plays a lot of games. There's more to the game than the 90 minutes on match day. It's also important that, like with a 3rd/4th choice goalkeeper, that person is mature enough to accept their role in the squad and not cause disruption.

I understand your logic, but surely we can afford to sign a cm without selling anyone. We gave spent a net £3m approx on transfers this season and g
have freed up D4's wages.

If we can sell one and add to the bank balance and carry on as we are it will be a successful window for Garlick.

I've heard a rumour that we won't be signing anybody.

After 79 posts, we may have some transfer news we can believe.

Burnley have made a €28m bid for Fenerbahce striker Vedat Muriqi according to the Milliyet newspaper.

Per the source, the Premier League outfit have made an offer but Fenerbahce are concerned that selling the striker could harm their title hopes.

The Yellow-Navies board is against selling Muriqi over January but the fee being quoted would break the Super Lig transfer record.

Fenerbahce reportedly want more than €28m for the Kosovo international.

The fee being quoted would help the financially strapped club but they would have just a few days to find a replacement.

The report also claims that Manchester United also want the 1.94m tall striker.

This Player link popped up again now in the Turkish press

Would be more believable if it was 2.8 million and not the 28 million that's being reported   :o

Huddersfield Town are monitoring (Wells) because they have a sell-on clause built into the player's £5m transfer from the John Smith's Stadium, and he is being touted with a £7m price tag - so the Terriers could collect a percentage of any profit.

If we get 7 million for Wells we are well and truly picking their pockets.

I saw a lot of these €28million rumours on Twitter this morning. I suspect just spammers trying to get you to click on various articles.

Unless someone knows otherwise...

Surely that Muriqi link is a simple case of the journalistic trick “player who could command PL interest” + “PL club who would suit a target man” = rumour
