If we get 7 million for Wells we are well and truly picking their pockets.
Looks like 'Uddersfield get a %. So we prob get our money back.
As for the fee, seems fair and chased by several makes it right.

If we got £7m we’d make a profit regardless of Huddersfield’s %.

Wells played for QPR after it has been stated that we were going to recall him. Bristol City will want to win tonight so have fielded their strongest possible side, and have every right to do so, even if a deal was in place they still have the right to play them until it’s done and dusted. Sometimes just a gentleman’s agreement means they sit out so not too risk an injury.

Thing is Bristol can't afford NOT to play him as they are on the fringes of the play offs and every point could mean the difference between a crack at the PL or missing out (again)

Yes, but if Wells had suffered a broken leg, they could have still sent him back. If anything happens to Brownhill, any deal would be off.

If a deal was close they wouldn’t play. If they are injured any deal would be off. That could impact on Bristol’s own plans. We ll be ******* about quibbling as usual. If these are targets and injured we won’t have any back up plan of course.

No brainer for brizzle not to play him. £10m, or equivalent with a swap deal, now or £7m in Summer. £100m+ if they come up. Of course they will play him.

Apparently Dyche has made 15 signings in the Winter window in total whilst with us. 7 have turned out to be good and 8 have turned out to be cr*p. Not sure if that’s a reasonable success rate or not.

All mind games-lets face it, lots of rumours, speculation and bullshit. The manager and Board are tight lipped, and in fairness with just 3 days to go very little activity with all 20 PL clubs other than Villa, and some speculation about West Ham, Man U, Newcastle

If that's all depressing Villa went on to win tonight to get to a Final

Personally I will be pleasantly surprised if we get anyone over the line. More likely to be outgoings

Unlike a number of people I’m not going to claim that I’ve seen anywhere near enough of Brownhill to know whether he’s better than Lennon or Brady, but I know that he plays in a different position.

Just getting the facts sorted Boysie

"At the time, the Warrington-born centre midfielder was playing his football at Preston North End, however, he failed to break into the first team at Preston when they reached the Championship and subsequently went on loan to Barnsley in League One in the final year of his contract at the club.

It was then when Lee Johnson and Bristol City began sniffing around. Then just 20, he snubbed a move to Preston and decided to join City as a free agent, although some compensation was owed (BBC).

Even before Brownhill had moved, it seems Johnson knew he had a potential leader on his hands, as his words suggests when the pre-contract deal was arranged.

The Bristol City manager said (BBC): “As well as being a good footballer he’s also a fantastic character.”

“He is a young, hungry, sought-after player who is experienced beyond his years in modern-day football, and we’ve beaten off competition from other clubs to get him.”

It didn’t take long for City’s new midfielder to start pushing for the first team. In his first season (16/17), he started 19 games for the Robins in the Championship and came on in eight.

Since then, he has been a dead cert starter for the club. In both the 17/18 and 18/19 season, he played 45 league games in both campaigns and has become the club captain this season. Furthermore, Brownhill has won back-to-back Young Player of the Year awards at the club, so perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a huge surprise when bigger clubs started to show interest this year."

Brownhill is a good championship player who fits into the hard working mould, but with more forward impetus than our current crop of midfielders. He might not be a winger, but he is a quality right midfielder and a solid central or attacking midfielder.

The question is, after betting on Drinkwater in the Summer window, can we see out the rest of this season with three central midfielders. If either Cork or Westwood aren't available, because of injuries or cards, Hendrick moves into the middle. Alternatively, we might choose to play Hendrick in the middle instead of Cork or Westwood.

Either way, moving Hendrick into the centre currently means that we don't have another player to do his job on the right or up front. So we have to go with a natural winger, instead of a midfield stopper who can cut in and support our central midfielders ( or play behind a single striker ), and two up front.

Our options became very limited when we lost Westwood for that three match spell before Christmas. The even bigger consideration is the potential for injuries. Going into the latter part of the season with only three central midfielders doesn't give us a lot of scope to manage the unexpected.

The bigger question is who could we buy in the domestic market for the equivalent of a soon to be out of contract Wells and a couple of million on top ?

Rigg had a full year to find a suitable midfielder that we could buy in the last window and we ended up with Drinkwater on loan. I think the club were banking on Drinkwater staying until the end of the season and his departure caught them off guard. Their response seemed to be an attempt to buy Conor Gallagher, which was as unrealistic as all of the targets Rigg apparently put forward in the Summer.

We chose to do nothing in the last Winter window, in order to give Rigg the time and extra money to work his magic in the Summer. He repaid that risky investment with failure. If we are seriously thinking about doing that again, in the vain hope that things will work out differently if we give him more time and a bigger budget, we need to think again.

A minor out of character blip and back on course I could get behind. However in 10 years as a Technical Director he hasn't overseen a single successful transfer window. During his career he has been responsible for some of the most catastrophic cluster ***** English football has ever seen.

A billion pounds spent at Man City in four short years which resulted in a lot of super expensive bench sitters and a skin of their teeth league win after he left. Since that time Man City have spent 500m and achieved far more success. Taking into account market inflation, 500m today is the equivalent of 200m or less during Riggs time at City. That illustrates just how much money he wasted on transfer fees, agent fees and wages while he was with them.

His brief spells with QPR and Fulham generated even worse outcomes. One of the main contributing factors to the fall of QPR was the transfer policy that Rigg initiated when he was with them. That was the window that propelled their wage bill into the stratosphere and dimished their on the pitch performance to a wimper, resulting in relegation. It is a touch ironic that the reason QPR can't afford Wells is because Rigg played a major part in their financial downfall.

The upshot is that if a player drops into our lap that can do a job for us we should sign them, because leaving it up to Rigg to identify suitable players is a very risky strategy. A cold shudder goes down my spine when I read the posts on here that are advocating a big Summer rebuild with multiple incomings/outgoings.

Granted, a lot rests on Nahki and the club he wants to join, but Bristol City would seem like the best option for him.

If he went to QPR they might struggle with wages and they don't have a permanent team to speak of ( a lot of their current players are only with them on loan ).

Forrest play with one up top so his playing chances would be more limited.

Bristol would give him a greater chance of promotion, better playing prospects, a financially secure environment and a nice place to live. Again, it seems like a simple choice.

If the release clause is triggered then the fee cannot be driven up as Bristol City are bound to accept every offer of £7m so nobody would benefit from offering a penny above that figure.

Where we could lose out though is that other teams could come in and blow us out the water in terms of wages and/or signing on fee
Just because someone activates the release clause doesn't mean a club can't bid more than £7m!

It's a release clause not a maximum fee

As soon as you meet the release clause it's then down to how attractive the deal is to the player. No point us offering 10 million and a 30K PW salary when someone else can offer 7 million and 60K PW, the player will choose the second option every time. The selling club cannot force the player to go to the club who offers the highest transfer fee.
