Because there scouting is so good they cant keep hold of those players, hence it affects their results. Dan James, Neil Maupay and there are many more. I agree we have, and that's the important word...should be we are.!!

But if their model was so successful then they would have reinvested the income from these players they have had to sell and would surely have won promotion to the Premier League by now?

You make a very good point, I suppose at lot may have gone on the new stadium and they do spend decent money on Marquee signings. As you say, we were very good at identifying decent players.. Gray, Tarks etc...but the last 2 seasons weve gone away from that. And that weve got Rigg in to do just that, either he is curtailed because of the money the Directors are giving him..or he is living on past successes.

The worry is, we have a lot of players out of contract at the end of this season. We cant afford marquee signings, so we need to up our game on the scouting.

If you want a quick bash at the club just point Brentford & hold them up as a beacon of good recruitment from lower leagues which we should be emulate.
You just have to ignore the sugar daddy owner and massive club debt...

Kieran Trippier is an example of the challenge: signed from City and the club improved him, but contract was running down and we could only get him to sign another contract with a modest release clause. I'd expect that Tripps would have signed for a higher release clause if we had offered higher wages. Let's assume that the club's finances didn't allow this. So Tripps had one more great season with us, proved what he could do and Spurs triggered his release clause and he was gone.

Trippier's release clause wasn't particularly modest. In the year 13-14, when the release clause was set, only 1 English defender was sold for more than £3.5m (Stephen Caulker to Cardiff) and Trippier at that time had never played in the Premier League. Certainly we would have been unlikely to sell him for more at that time.

After a year in the Premier, of course, his value would have gone up - except that he would have been out of contract!!!
