Seen them before and they are fantastic, but they have stepped it up another gear this time. The drummer
is a Manc.
Enjoy.

First time I saw APFS was at the Colne Muni!
Their shows have got bigger and better, but I miss the intimacy of seeing them at a small venue.

Saw Focus last month at The Band on the Wall in Manchester. On their 50th anniversary tour. Sat upstairs and looking at the audience downstairs was like being in a monastery! Just Thijs van Leer and Pierre van Der Linden left from the original line up but still mad as a box of frogs and musically brilliant! Agree with the sentiments on Moving Waves and Akkerman.houseboy wrote: Moving Waves was an incredible album with a sidelong track call Eruptions. Jan Akkerman is one of the finest guitarists around but never gets too much mention when people talk of 'guitar heroes'.

Did you you know that van Leer is a classical flautist? Bought a solo album of his once expecting mad Hammond organ stuff and was greeted by orchestra and flute. Beautiful album though and one of the best 'mistakes' I ever made when buying music. Seek it out bud, I think it was called Introspection.Mondsley wrote:Saw Focus last month at The Band on the Wall in Manchester. On their 50th anniversary tour. Think you mean Van Leer as Van der Linden is the drummer! They are both immensely talented. I have never seen anyone play flute and keyboards at the same time which VL did the other week! Thanks for the heads up. Will look out for it.

Re: Classic Rock Tracks for Old Farts
Pierre wasn't in the original line-up, but certainly on some of their best known. Personally, I'd say their albums 8 through 10 are as strong as anything they ever did (not quite as pleased with 11) which is something for a band of that era. I can't fault Akkerman for what he wrote and contributed in the 70s but I prefer Gootjes to be honest - there's a certain scratchiness about Akkerman's playing that I'm not as fond of.Mondsley wrote:Saw Focus last month at The Band on the Wall in Manchester. Re: Classic Rock Tracks for Old Farts
I was speaking to Rod Argent about 18 months ago. It was business - he owns a recording studio somewhere down South and we were talking about insurance (yes that boring). He's well past 70 now I think. His organ solo on Hold Your Head Up has been cited by no less than Rick Wakeman as the best Hammond organ solo he's ever heard - now that is praise indeed.Tricky Trevor wrote:Mrs Trevor and myselfs first gig as a couple was Argent, mentioned higher up, supported by Montrose at Newcastle City Hall, Sep ‘73. For quite a few years they had a guitarist called Laurie Wisefield who had previously been in a great band called Home who I saw supporting Mott
the Hoople in the early 70's. They made 3 great albums the best of which was their second simply called Home. The Alchemist was their third and last album, a concept album. Their other claim to fame was bassist Cliff Williams who went onto world domination with non other than AC/DC, who resemble Home not one jot.

Western Front/Lady of the Birds is a masterpiece mate - they played that live when I saw them and it absolutely blew me away (we were tripped out of our brains mind you). They are the best support band I ever saw by a mile. Rumour has on that tour they actually blew Mott away at some gigs, which is some claim because Mott were a terrific live act.Leisure wrote:Got Home in my collection but haven't played it in ages. Re: Classic Rock Tracks for Old Farts
Think you mean Van Leer as Van der Linden is the drummer! They are both immensely talented. I have never seen anyone play flute and keyboards at the same time which VL did the other week! Thanks for the heads up. Will look out for it.[/quote]Mondsley wrote:Did you you know that van Der Linden is a classical flautist? Bought a solo album of his once expecting mad Hammond organ stuff and was greeted by orchestra and flute. Beautiful album though and one of the best 'mistakes' I ever made when buying music. Seek it out bud, I think it was called Introspection.
I realised my mistake when I was driving home from work as I was thinking about it and edited it (but not before your eagle eye caught it) when I got home. It is a fine album though if you like a bit of classical music. No clowning around just very well played with some quite famous (if you're into classical) pieces on it. And it is definitely called Introspection - I've checked just to be sure.

Re: Classic Rock Tracks for Old Farts
Don't know what the hell has happened to my above post and I can't seem to change it. The quotes are the wrong way around. Apologies to Mondsley. I was trying to say that I'd realised my error with the names (age?) and edited it but not before Mondsley noticed (well done mate).
