Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
Accu Clarets coach thread gas just remained me. There was a goodly number of coaches, from the local catchment area, on Saturday. Is this new?

I remember when Belvedere Road was lined with green double decker buses over from Keighley and surrounding area.

My youngest lad plays over in Keighley and I was talking to a few of the other dads.Funkydrummer wrote:I remember when Belvedere Road was lined with green double decker buses over from Keighley and surrounding area.
They used to come over every other week to the Turf and alternate with Elland road as youngsters.
Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
Barrowford Clarets always run a coach to home games. Makes sense really I suppose.

Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
I remember 2 'Ellen Smith Rochdale' coaches outside the Turf every home game in the 60's and 70's.
Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
Ellen Smith ran coaches to every home game from Rochdale/Littleborough (and many away games) in the Sixties as did Yelloway. They also ran coaches to Man Ure and City. So when we played them the coaches were populated by both sets of fans which made for an interesting journey!gawthorpe_view wrote:I remember 2 'Ellen Smith Rochdale' coaches outside the Turf every home game in the 60's and 70's.

I didn't see the 2 Hamilton coaches. They are usually the 2 I do see. Change of line up perhaps.
Whatever the reason, it is great to see organised coaches to Turf Moor from surrounding catchment area.
Up the Clarets.

I think the Hamilton coaches were for the Jockney hammers who had travelled down from Scotland. Turf Moor will be one of there nearest Premier league ground to follow West Ham

Yes Mondsley, you could buy coach tickets at Billy Howarth's barbers!Mondsley wrote:Ellen Smith ran coaches to every home game from Rochdale/Littleborough (and many away games) in the Sixties as did Yelloway.
Pomfrets from Shore also ran coaches to Turf Moor

Seen the Hamilton coach there on a few occasions thought it was one of our supporters clubs in the highlands
Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
Wow! Pomfrets, I had forgotten about them. Just to be pedantic, Billy Howarth's was Yelloway and Charlie Hollingworth's newsagents was Ellen Smiths. My dad and I preferred the latter as it was more genteel than Yelloway On another note. I am sure we must know each other from the LCC connection if nothing else!CleggHall wrote:

Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
When Leeds wore yellow.and blue and they were a Div2 side. As for coaches bringing in home fans there was always at least one from Haslingden, bookings made on Ratcliffe St. for a Ben Barnes coach. Price in 1960 was 2/-(2 shillings) or 10p . Went up to 2/3d(11p) a couple of years later. Had a radio on it for Sports Report at 5 o'clock too.tim_noone wrote:When?
Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
in the 70s Ribblesdale ran two coaches to Burnley home games from Blackburn
One went straight there, before the M65 of course
The second picked up in Great harwood and Rishton

Yes Hamilton coaches are regular. I, too, thought it was a Scottish (central rather than Highlands) Burnley contingent.Longside4evr wrote:Seen the Hamilton coach there on a few occasions thought it was one of our supporters clubs in the highlands

Usually a few Irish buses as well. I think that they're on footballing weekend trips ( Saturday game at the Turf and then a Sunday game in Manchester or Liverpool or vice versa). Anyway, wherever they're from they're welcome.IanMcL wrote:Yes Hamilton coaches are regular. I, too, thought it was a Scottish (central rather than Highlands) Burnley contingent.

Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
Back in the 1960s on a match day, the perimeter of Fulledge Rec would be full of buses that had come in from outlying areas. They would sit there throughout the match ready to take the passengers back after the final whistle.
Re: Coaches outside Belvedere Road Entrance, Saturday
A pity that these collecting bases are not used now. Would surely boost attendance.

Even before the 60s Tony.ClaretTony wrote:Back in the 1960s on a match day, the perimeter of Fulledge Rec would be full of buses that had come in from outlying areas. They would sit there throughout the match ready to take the passengers back after the final whistle.
The stretch of Mitella St from Thursfield Rd to past Athletic St would be full of Todmorden buses, and the full length of Thursfield Rd full of BCN ones.
About a quarter of Fulledge rec would generally be packed with away supporters coaches, especially if we were playing any of the North East, or Manchester/Liverpool teams.
Us Fulledge kids would take an old football - not a good un cos the ash/clinker top surface cut 'em to bits, - start a kickabout and before long, the away fans would take over, a sort of full scale match would take place place and then they'd have a collection and we'd end up with quite a lot of money. Not daft us kids from around there
As soon as they'd gone, we'd cash up, share the spoils out, dash over to t'Turf, and either pay to get on with our new found riches or climb over the wall at the Beehole end.
Happy days.

Andertons from Keighley in the 70's were there as well. Got a bit lively when there were away buses mixed in as well. Those were the days
