Old Burnley photographs
Burnley Civic Trust are working on the old Burnley Express archive, digitising the photographs from the newspapers and reprinting the stories on our website. I have just uploaded two stories today, one concerning the inaugural meeting if the Junior Clarets and one of the team embarking for Naples for THAT match. See them and others at bcthic.org. Follow the link to the Heritage Image Collection.

Re: Old Burnley photographs
Great work Guitargeorge.
Superb photo of the team outside the Turf before the trip to Naples for THAT match. For those of us who remember the battle it was probably a wise decision of John Angus to stay behind in the relative calm of Burnley. Just how the players and fans got home in one piece after that match was a miracle, even Bob Lord was fearing the worst at one point.

Re: Old Burnley photographs
Burnley Civic Trust is doing a sterling job with this archive but almost every update is tinged with sadness at the wanton destruction of Burnley's industrial and civic heritage in the 1960s. I know the sentiment at the time was 'out with the old, in with the new' but, by God, none of it was an improvement.

Re: Old Burnley photographs
Some coincidence that on Page 2, Row 5 of the link above, there is a photo of our infamous goalkeeper Jack Hillman on the very day that he will be honoured with a unique legacy number (242) for England's 1,000th International match this evening against Montenegro.
Hillman played just the once for England against Ireland in 1899 and let in two goals, didn't matter though as England scored 13 at the other end!

I was a leader at The Junior Clarets for many years. Loved every minute of it. Do the Club currently operate anything similar ?
Re: Old Burnley photographs
I was also a Junior Clarets leader, though only young at the time. Wonder if we met. My name is Frank, and I was quite tall to say the least. (Hence BigF).FCBurnley wrote:I was a leader at The Junior Clarets for many years. Loved every minute of it. Do the Club currently operate anything similar ?

I might well have been, being 6'5'' or so. However, I don't recognise your online name and so can't remember sorry. Over 50 years ago, seems a long time that has passed by quickly.FCBurnley wrote:Yes I know you for sure. Also played cricket with CT for Redrose if that helps. Re: Old Burnley photographs
Be interesting to see this evening how much recognition the likes of Connelly, Pointer, Angus, Miller, Coates & Dobson receive this evening, although probably best if not too mention made of Jack Hillman.

My teams always won haha. I am 72 now so yes it is a lifetime ago. I used to do 6-9 3 nights a week. Got me fit for the only time in my life. We used to play 5 a side after the kids had left. Also used to run up and down long side to train. I couldn’t even walk that now never mind run !!!!BigF wrote:I might well have been, being 6'5'' or so. Re: Old Burnley photographs
I enjoyed the "staff" games after the youngsters had gone home. Great fun. I too could not now run up and down the longside steps. I'm 69 so must have been the youngster among the leaders in those days. (Joined as a leader at 16 yrs old - anything Clarets in those days)..FCBurnley wrote:My teams always won haha.
