According to this article we jumped in at the last minute with help from a Watford scout called Greg Walsh.

They like missing out on world class players. They can't blame ash cloud now.
Although I'm not sure why they missed out on Beckham and Ronaldiniho?

Hardly missed out on him, it makes it out as though we gazumped them at the 11th hour.

He hadn't even gone for a trial or agreed to sign.

Kids get watched all the time from various scouts every single game, and pass through academy's like wildfire.

A bit of a none story if you ask me.
