Re: Pope to start
It's a game England have to win to be top seeds, so I'd be very surprised to see Southgate not putting his strongest side out, which in his eyes includes pickford

England are 3 points clear with a significant goal difference so they’re already assured top spot

According to yesterday's press they needed to win to guarantee to be a top seed next summerStproc wrote:England are 3 points clear with a significant goal difference so they’re already assured top spot

Southgate has done it the right way round IMO giving Pope the tougher of the 2 games.

I just read, "Sterling returns, Gomez injured" - aye, ok.
Re: Pope to start
Not sure many of us actually believe Gomez has picked up a knock in training. I'd have been tempted to play him today, the travelling support would have given him a great reception, completely different to some of the idiots/tourists who go to Wembley.

Re: Pope to start
We have, what 4? 5? games before we kick off next summer? This is a perfect time to get him involved, because he's better than the lumps we have in central defence at the moment. Any decent attack are going to completely rip Stones and Maguire to shreds.jrgbfc wrote:Not sure many of us actually believe Gomez has picked up a knock in training. Mings? Rice?

https://www.skysports.com/football/news ... nst-kosovoCallum Hudson-Odoi and Nick Pope will start for England against Kosovo in their final European Qualifier, Sky Sports News understands.
Pope earns his first England start, after the Burnley goalkeeper was first called up in March 2018, while Chelsea winger Hudson-Odoi makes only his second start as Gareth Southgate explores his squad options.

On a serious note. I’d be concerned for him if he has a MF containing Rice, Winks and Hudson-Odoi in front of Mings and Maguire.

Not so sure of the midfield quality.
Hmmm not so sure of part of the defence.
Hmmm...not convinced about the centre back partnership.
Phew! The keeper looks sound.

The Gomez made up injury is a shame, as he's surely better than the other options.IanMcL wrote:Not so sure of the midfield quality.

I think Gomez like some others, are still learning and not yet up to standard.

He's in the squad so this is one of the few chances he'd have had. If he wasn't up to it he wouldn't have been selected.IanMcL wrote:I think Gomez like some others, are still learning and not yet up to standard.
But it appears his mind isn't on the game due to some fans turning on him so he's 'injured'.
Re: Pope to start
'If he wasn't up to it he wouldn't have been selected'
Unfortunately, that's the issue. Players had to be playing week in, week out and hardened to the game. Experienced enough to know what to do and when. Now they learn as they go and are barely playing, other than for England, in several cases.

Mings was arguably England's best player in Bulgaria in difficult circumstances, that said my granny could have looked impressive against that mob.MACCA wrote:Mings? Rice?

Today will provide a sterner test of his defensive skills, and show whether he's up to international standard,i have my doubts regarding his concentration levels over 90 minutes, you always feel he'll make one big error during a game, and at this level that's usually costly.
Rice has a lot to prove as well,he was poor in Prague, and looked out of his depth,as a holding midfielder his main task is to nullify the opposition and keep possession,he did neither against the Czechs, and subsquently England were overrun in the engine room,if you don't have control of the midfield it doesn't matter how much firepower you possess, you'll struggle to win football matches.

Rice was utterly useless in that West Ham display last week. I can only assume he was having an off day because if he wasn't how the hell are England so desperate???

If i had to choose between them i'd pick Foden,he affects games and has the potential to improve with age,i don't see Rice developing in the same manner.FactualFrank wrote:The word 'desperate' comes to mind. Mental. What does that make Foden... 300 million?
Young English players go for crazy money,we'll do well to remember this when the suitors come for McNeil.

We don't see him week in,week out,he's been getting rave reviews in the press, but he didn't impress against the Czech Republic, and if he's going to be in contention for a starting berth come the Euro's,he needs a few good performances starting from todayDark Cloud wrote:Rice was utterly useless in that West Ham display last week.
