Opening Day Thrashings

Post by Longside4evr » Mon Nov 18, 2019 12:56 pm

Just going through some of my old programs and came across one game I had a lot of optimism going into the new season.
It was the infamous John Bond season, big talk and a name to take the club forward players signing for us that wouldn't have look twice at the proposition.
So the new program was up on us and an healthy intake of supporters must have been unitized by europa of a glimmering season a head so we thought.
A special train all coaches had been filled to our first game of the season away to Hull City
Thing is the supports turned up but the team certainly did not we lost the game 4-1 with a solitary goal scored by the only impressive Kevin Reeves.
Can't really remember too many opening humiliations as they been anymore you attended.

Watford away under waddle. It wasn’t a thrashing but just an awful performance after the hype about his appointment. You could tell from that first game he was clueless!!

Disappointment all round when many again thought it was a step forward.
Funny how things turn out under less expectation for us and being under the radar
Well it's Watford up next let's hope we are up for it and can take the maximum points

Wednesday away, first game of the 2008/09 promotion season.

I used to usually miss the first few games of the season as I was still playing cricket but it threw it down and the match was abandoned so drove down.

We definitely looked more like relegation fodder than promotion challengers that day.

Equally **** was the following week at home to Ipswich (think parachutist on roof) when we were lucky enough to have another abandonment.

29th August 1925, Aston Villa 10 Burnley 0. Top that!

(ClaretTony will remember the details ;) )

We won the second game 4-0 against Leicester.

Home to Colchester, the first league game after the Orient game in August 1987. Went to the game full of optimism with a side full of new signings. A 0-3 opening home result wasn't what we were hoping for....

Burnley 1-3 Brighton in 02/03. We'd just had two great seasons since coming up to Div 1 and then in the opening game of this one we played newly promoted Brighton (who were singing that they were back but they went down). We were 3-0 down too until the last minute and Gnohere might even have been sent off for headbutting or spitting or something stupid. Even though the scoreline wasn't high it felt bad enough that i still remember it today!

If you are brave enough to watch - these are the three goals we conceded

Not a thrashing but this one must have been difficult to take in 1958

Half time: Burnley 3 Manchester City 0
Full time: Burnley 3 Manchester City 4

Looking back, that really was when Stan’s spell was broken. He’d truly lost his touch.

My older brother was at that game and as a result has influenced me never to celebrate a victory until the final whistle is blown(some say 'until the fat lady sings'). Either way, just wait until it's official.

He'd blame ITV Digital, but there was players in that squad who just couldn't be @rsed anymore. Davis's 'attempt' at stopping that second goal was pathetic. And who knows what happened to Gnohere who just became a shadow of the 01/02 player.

That was the day Stan accused Robbie Blake of playing in diving boots but I don't think we can blame Robbie for some of that defending.

Wow - our defence looked like they all had diving boots on.
That second goal - who is the no 5 ? Steve Davis ?
He looks like he is walking on the moon chasing their player and then does some kind of weird chicken head feint like he was threatening to make a tackle !!

That defending for the second by Davis would be embarrassing on a Sunday league pitch, never mind Championship level!

Cant remember the score but the first game back in tier 2 under Mullen I remember going to Middlesbrough which was also Robson's first game in charge as player/manager.

They absolutely played us off the park with John Hendrie looking a class above anything we had at the time. Was a right sunny day with both sets of fans dead excited for the game which made for a cracking atmosphere before kick off

I remember Hendrie getting a hat trick on the Turf for Boro. He was a good player at that level

That Brighton game... it looked like we were gonners. We hadn’t invested in the team - Stan and the board were losing the fans and the club was broke.

I think that’s the season we had Andrew Watson begging for fans to attend - it was beginning to look a bit grim

Wasn’t it Dave Edmundson at that point?

I'm not exactly sure when Dave replaced Watson but I am guessing around 2003.

Googled it and it was October 2003 so it was Watson in 2002/03.

Another 3-1 home defeat in the opening game was against Chelsea in 2014. We might have gone in front but it didn't take them long to go 3-1 up and in truth they murdered us that night.

Another Fabregas master class I seem to remember.
I watched the game from a sports bar in Toronto and Scott Arfield scores a great early opener and I was thinking not much to this Premier League lark.
I think that was the last time we managed to kick the ball !

We won the second game 4-0 against Leicester.
That season saw the introduction of the new Offside rule, whereby two players, rather than three had to be between the receiving player and the goal .... I've often wondered if the letter advising Burnley of the change got lost in the post !! ;) ;)

That pass from him for the Schürrle goal was something else and added to his performance up to going off injured for Arsenal in 2009.

They were up for it with the appointment of Robson it was at Ayrsome Park and we got beat 2-0 we were green but even if we had been established at that level that day the score would not have made any difference it amazing we kept it down to that score line
I think they won promotion that season

It seemed like Chelsea scored 3 and decided that was enough. But if we dared pull one back they would have scored another 3 for good measure. We couldn't get near them to even attempt to score.

When we took the lead my mate turned round and said: “I hope that hasn’t made them mad.” It took them seven minutes to go in front and the third followed soon after. I think it’s probably best we didn’t score another.

I've not seen those goals from Brighton in absolutely ages. As others have said, you simply cannot believe what you're seeing when watching Davis "defending" the second. It's utterly laughable.
PS I saw Stan T in town today and he looked really well and never seems to look any older!!!

I saw Stan a couple of weeks ago. Looks remarkably well given what he went through last year.

One of the best goals ever scored ont’Turf. Shame it was the opposition. I thought Schurrle was a wonderful player but he’s never lasted anywhere long and soon gets relegated to the bench.

Scored another brilliant goal on the Turf last January for Fulham but he was hardly a success there.

We went to Hull in the back of a transit van . It was a lovely sunny day and we had a good drink at dinner time. What unfolded on the pitch was shocking. Even at this time Gallagher looked a crock

Lost 4-1, Gallagher dropped for the next league game which we won 5-1. How the medical people declared Joe fit enough to sign remains beyond me.

It was CT and my memory may be misleading but I think we had a 3-3 draw with Birmingham soon after
I was wrong having checked with the results that and the season after
It was the home game against City when 4-1 up with less than 5 mins to go and City banged in another 2 as we just avoided a repeat of the previous year

The Sheffield Wednesday first game thrashing was a shambles of a performance
Penny was our number one in the middle of our goal and thats were he stayed
Dont think he played another full game after that did he
But on paper we should have been comfortable
They also ran out 2-4 winners at Turfmoor
I bet it was the only team to do the double on us that season
