JB Smith - Rishton
JB Smith - Rishton
My uncle Bernard, a long time Claret supporter, sadly passed away last week aged 89. He was a season ticket holder in the Bob Lord Stand until recently and there may be people who sat near him for many years and who aren't aware of his passing (hence me posting this). He played cricket for Rishton from 1947 until 1978, along with his brother JJ Smith. He was in the team during the 1964 season when Rishton played Burnley in the Worsely Cup Final at Turf Moor but didn't play in that game. His funeral is this Friday at 1pm at St Charles Church, Station Road, Rishton.

Re: JB Smith - Rishton
Sad news - I remember both JB Smith & JJ Smith playing for Rishton. Had no idea they were Burnley fans though.
JJ Smith played in that final, taking the two wickets that pro Johnny Wardle didn't take for Rishton.
I'd no idea you were related to them Leisure.

Yes, Bernard (he was always known by this name and not John) was married to my dad's sister. I remember them taking me to European games at the Turf in the 60's. We were in the enclosure infront of the main stand and it was that packed that I was passed over people's heads and sat on the track at pitch level. Bernard's children, Martin and Hilary, and their boys are all season ticket holders.

I do remember one man who used to watch Rishton some years ago who always used to go round winding up the Rovers fans. It was only more recently that I learned Jack Baron was a member of your family. You come from good Claret stock then Leisure.Leisure wrote:Yes, Bernard (he was always known by this name and not John) was married to my dad's sister. Always sad to hear of fellow Clarets passing no matter what age.

Yes, Jack was my Dad! Took me to many away games as a youngster, including Spurs at Wembley in the FA Cup Final. Pity that he didn't get to see us in the PL but at least my Uncle Bernard did.

Always a sadness for those who have missed it. My dad passed away in 1989 when we were a fourth division club. At least his last game, a year earlier, was a 6-0 win.Leisure wrote:

A great man was Bernard and a lovely man who was a great clarets fan and great cricketer for Rishton. His brother Jimmy another great cricketer was a Rovers fan! A long long time ago as a boy I went with my dad , leisure’s dad and Bernard to watch Burnley at Liverpool in the cup. Believe it or not because of injuries les latcham played up front and scored! We still lost 2.1!

Re: JB Smith - Rishton
This sounds like the Bernard who me and karenbodge were wondering about last week, as we hadn't seen him this season.
Leisure, did he sit on row P near the half way line ? His son is from Warrington and i believe Bernard was also a very good footballer, the Bernard we knew was definitely from Rishton, this unfortunately sounds very much like him.

Re: JB Smith - Rishton
Did he have a son named after him and/or a son named Barrie?
