Oldest living England Internationals ...
I'm led to believe Burnley can boast two of the top-ten oldest surviving English International footballers ?
Any ideas ?

Re: Oldest living England Internationals ...
I think McDonald might be the second oldest living ex-Claret behind Jock Aird.

As soon as I saw the name " Royboyclaret ", I knew it would either be the correct answer, or an explanation of what's happening with our " Dry powder store ", and the appropriate current depreciation rules from HMRC !!Royboyclaret wrote:Possibly Brian Pilkington and Colin McDonald.
Well done, Sir ! Thread over !

Jock will be 94 years young next February and a decent standard right-back he was too.ClaretTony wrote:I think McDonald might be the second oldest living ex-Claret behind Jock Aird.

Way before my time but I believe he’s the oldest. Don’t know if any others between him and McDonald who has just gone 89. It’s just over a year since I was with him at Gawthorpe and you’d never have thought he was that age. Had a fantastic chat with him.Royboyclaret wrote:Jock will be 94 years young next February and a decent standard right-back he was too.

Jock's last season with us '54/'55 was my first. Think we sold him to Dundee at the end of the season. He emigrated to Australia but still returned to Burnley on a regular basis.ClaretTony wrote:Way before my time but I believe he’s the oldest. Never played for any British club other than us. One of two ex-Clarets to have played international football for two different countries. He played for Scotland & New Zealand.Royboyclaret wrote:Jock's last season with us '54/'55 was my first. Think we sold him to Dundee at the end of the season. It’s Gordon Astall who is 92. He won two caps in 1956.Tricky Trevor wrote:Good thread but who is the oldest?

Jock took over from Arthur Woodruff and I am pleased to say I saw both play for us but cannot recall who took over from Jock before ANGUS got the shirt. Tom Cummings played right back for a time and I think he was at RB when he had that long term injury that almost cost his career until from memory he came back as centre half I think as a result of Seith falling out of favour with Lord. Maybe CT can flick through the history books to put the chronology correct

Re: Oldest living England Internationals ...
Jock Aird did indeed take Woodruff's place in the side at the beginning of the '50's and made the position his own for the next few seasons. He took the eye of the Scottish selectors and played four times for Scotland in 1954. Strangely it was part way through that season '54/'55 that he was replaced at right-back at Burnley by Harold Rudman, perhaps a fall-out with then manager Allan Brown, don't know but seemed odd that he was dropped whilst at the peak of his form. David Smith was also starting to emerge as a decent full-back at that time so competition was fierce.mdd2 wrote:Jock took over from Arthur Woodruff and I am pleased to say I saw both play for us but cannot recall who took over from Jock before ANGUS got the shirt. Anyway Aird didn't play for us again and left the Club at the end of the season for Dundee, this is where I take issue with CT in that there were a couple of people living around these parts until recently who will confirm that Aird had a couple of happy seasons playing for Dundee until he retired and emigrated to New Zealand.

There's an interview with Gordon Astall on " Mail-Online ", published last week to coincide with England's 1,000th game ...originally, the interview was supposed to be with Bert Mozley, a Derby defender who'd won 3 caps in 1949, but he sadly passed away on 28th October in Canada, aged 96.ClaretTony wrote:It’s Gordon Astall who is 92. I'll bow to your superior knowledge once more. He was before my time but the Burnley record books show he left Burnley in September 1954 and emigrated in the following month.Royboyclaret wrote:Jock Aird did indeed take Woodruff's place in the side at the beginning of the '50's and made the position his own for the next few seasons. Which record book?......Certainly not 'Burnley A Complete Record'.......He played in the away game at Wolves in November 1954 and in fact I remember Dad taking me to watch us at Blackpool on Easter Monday, April 1955 and Jock Aird definitely played for us in that game.ClaretTony wrote:I'll bow to your superior knowledge once more.
