It has always amused me that the person on the sign of the General Williams pub is not the eponymous General Williams, but the Prussian Hero of Waterloo, Filed Marshall Gerhard Von Blucher.

Looks like it’s an advert for the Burnley v Man City game in a couple of weeks which I think is streaming on Amazon Prime.

Even General William looks like an older Sean Dyche.

Spent a good few hours in there when I was younger, particularly when I was underage as the landlord at the time (Dennis) was quite "flexible"

If you had money in your pocket he was happy to relieve you of it.

Thanks for that - was trying to remember the name of the landlord when I first went in. I might be mistaken but weren't his initials DD?

I think they were. Seems we're of the same vintage.

DD could have stood for Drunken Dennis as he definitely had a taste for what he was selling!

One of my errands when I was kid was to get my Gran's carry outs in the early evening but he sometimes opened late, especially if he'd had a few at lunchtime. I'd have to hang around and wait for him to open as I couldn't go back until I'd got the goods.

Yes, it was. Well done that man.

If memory serves, Tom Sutttard had the Rose & Crown across the road?

You are right cryssis Tom did have the Crown about the same time that Dennis was in the General Williams (or the Bill as all the locals call it). I went in both in the seventies before I moved down to the Padiham Rd area. When I moved back up to the area in the eighties (Park Ave) I started using the Crown as my local when a couple called Eric and Pet had it. I also started going in the Bill regularly in the nineties and I still go back to both pubs whenever I I am back in Burnley. My son is now a local in the Bill so it's a great meeting place for me to meet up with him and all my old mates when I am back.

Used to pop in now and again when I was visiting Mum & Dad but they passed away over 20 years ago so haven't been in either since. If you were drinking in them back in the 70's you were there the same time as I was and there's a good chance that we know each other.

I learn't a lot about people and life in those two pubs and it's stood me in good stead ever since.

Posh houses on Park Ave ;)

Learn't a lot about life and people (girls) in Scott Park too!

Used to play football in there every night in the summer until the sun went down or the Yogi's chased us off. Ian Brennan and Paul Bradshaw used to join us occasionally as they were staying with one of my mates as apprentices.
