A Hole in our Away Support

There was a big unoccupied area in the away end today.

I thought maybe a couple of coaches had got stuck in traffic, but even in the second half the seats were not taken, other than fans from other areas (like me) moving behind the goal.

I heard (from NoNayNever podcast) that we had sold out the away end - fake news?

It was a good oppurtunity for the people that can't stand up to move down the front.

It was certainly a large following. The seats at the very front would have been pretty wet ...even if sold.

There is usually one or two a holes in our away support....and our home support for that matter....

On the whole they are ok though

We’re in our Fourth continuous year as a Premier League Team. We are playing away at a less than glamourous Club that we have played at a number of times now at this and two other levels in the last 20 years. It’s also just before Xmas and money will be tight for many a travelling fan. It’s not really surprising that there is a level of Supporter Fatigue at this point. Fans of similar Clubs to us who attained our lofty status too, warned us of this eventuality. It gets a bit humdrum for many, just making up the numbers in a League.

We are hardly making up the numbers in a league.....for a start.

3k will be magically turning up in 2 weeks time....to watch us continue to make the numbers up

Yes we are.

The 3K turning up at the Etihad/Anfield/Old Trafford sort of proves my point about fans saving their money for the Glamour Matches.

At least they were no persistent standing and people with their view spoilt.

also, it's nice that there are games like today, where those fans who miss out on Sheff Utd, Spurs, Man Utd away tickets can go and watch us.

If you think we are making the numbers up I suggest going and doing something else at the weekend...

Since the 70s there have always been teams with little to no chance of winning the title....4 seasons ago Leicester won it and since then Wolves and ourselves have finished in Europe.

I read some bs on here but we are not making any numbers up...in fact go and ask Dyche to see if he is planning to throw the City game as we are just there to let them win...

For your first point, that is, in fact what I’m largely doing.
No ST for me this year. I’ve been on 4 matches so far; 3 home, 1 away. It seems, for me at least, the chase was more entertaining than the capture.

Second point; us and Wolves qualifying for the qualifying stages of the Euro Competition for the also-rans hardly strengthens your point.

The third point is just hysterical hyperbole; rather like your targeted campaign against Taylor.

Ahh the usual Taylor comment who I haven’t rated below 6 for 12 months...

So you’re bored of the premier league and yet you are happy to slag people off who are not.

You talk nonsense and thanks for proving to be one of the a holes in our support

No way we were ever going to sell 2 thousand for yesterday. For games like that we generally seem to take about 1200/1300 these days. After a few seasons in the same league away following will always drop off a bit.

Who have I slagged off? Apart from yourself.
I certainly wasn’t slagging off anyone who is getting fatigued by our also-ran status. It’s perfectly natural for some fans of Clubs like ours to lose their ardour for football when it is just about surviving.
No criticism from me.

Our football is not just about surviving...

We have improved year on year in the premier league. We have £15m players on the bench now.

In short we are not making the numbers up, which is what you said

You talk like you have refuted my assertion, when you haven’t. Yes, we have improved our Team, Squad, and Training Ground. This, however, does not mean that we are not just making up the numbers. The only team out of the usual Big 6/7 that is currently not making up the numbers is Leicester City, and evening their ascendancy is probably going to be a brief one.
Give it a couple of years and we’ll be a Championship Club again. That’s just how it works.

Not about the support....more about making the numbers up....something easy to say as we will inevitably go down. Even if/when we do we are not currently making the numbers up. That is an opinion that you can either agree or disagree with...

There have and always will be teams that will never likely be relegated but it doesn’t mean everyone else is making the numbers up. With that attitude you could argue that Man U have been making the numbers up since Fergie left as they were never going to win the league

You are yet to convincingly demonstrate how we are not making the numbers up. Just saying we aren’t isn’t adequate.

The fact is the best we can realistically hope for is 7th, and even that's pretty unlikely with Mourinho going in at Spurs and the strength of Wolves. Even though finishing 8th or 9th would be a massive achievement for us it's nowhere near as exciting as a promotion push, and I'd say the drop off in away support reflects that. There doesn't even appear much interest in Everton on Boxing Day, which is only an hour down the road.

I got there right on kick off and as I entered, I saw I had a 'wet seat' in the 3rd row. There were odd seats everywhere and bless them all (well mostly all), folks were sat down. Had a great view in row N, sat down

Surprisingly to some, the singing of the seated was as louder than ever.

Up the Clarets

Fact is that travelling anywhere in the UK is hard work. Away days can be costly. With little technical knowledge or limited cost outlay you can watch every Burnley game on your tv. To pretend that this isn’t going to affect attendances is madness.

Hi LB, if you think we are "making up the numbers" when we are in the Premier League, what are we doing when we are lower down the pyramid? No chance of winning any of the top prizes if we aren't even in the top league, playing against the top teams?

Theres a glass ceiling in the PL for many clubs.

Every other lower league offers the chance of winning it and being more competitive for a lot of clubs.

That's why plenty of clubs simply make up the numbers.

As for top prizes again its usually a select number of clubs who win them with the odd surprise team going the distance occasionally.

I guess my response should be, I'll take that compliment.... when I've worked out what you mean.

I was thrilled when Robbie Blake scored our first Premier League goal against the Premier League champions in our first home game in Premier League in 2009.

Is it now our 6th Premier League season? Didn't we also beat the previous season's Premier League champions down in London in August 2017?

That's what keeps me going on. It's the same thrill as Burnley 5 - 1 Leeds in October 1968.

That game is well written up in The Mighty Mighty Whites: http://www.mightyleeds.co.uk/matches/19681019.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Enjoy

Bob Lord's very argument right from the outset and the reason why he was so against TV getting involved. And such a logical argument and assumption on the surface too. Yet so many people do still pay good money and turn up at grounds despite the availability of watching from your armchair. So far Lord has been proven to be wrong, but even I'm not sure I really know why, as I'm one of those who still does trail around and spend loads watching in the stands. It's weird.

Agreed. We could probably sell 10k for a 20 mile jaunt to a glamour game. The run of the mill games for us will see a drop in support, I’ve been saying this for ages. It’s not surprising because the ‘average’ game will start to lose support due to the ‘gloss’ of PL football wearing off. The novelty factor is, quite naturally, wearing thin. It’s no big deal, just a fact of life.

I used to love away trips (and still do to an extent) win or lose.....

As far as away matches these days are concerned, it tends to be grounds my brother (and with Spurs me) he hasn't been to (as a late comer to watching football live since he retired)....

I tend these day to watch away matches online unless they are televised....

This day and age its about visiting new grounds for my Brother so I suffer and go along :D :D :D
