Batten down the hatches.
Beware our successful run up to Christmas this year may mean a difficult time in January. There’s a few desperate big spending clubs out there that are looking enviously at our players - Everton, West Ham, Arsenal and Spurs (under you know who) to name a few.
Currently we have among our ranks (as a certain lager advert would say) probably the best central defensive pairing, probably the best goalkeeper and probably the best young winger around. They will all be targeted and any or all of them could be prised away from us for the right price.
Add to that the likes of Barnes, Wood and Taylor plus the attraction of some of our internationally fringe players - Gibson, Vydra, Hart, Long, JBG, Hendrick and Brady. Even our manager and his staff may be sounded out.
We may be seen as the Supermarket Sweep of the Prem. and our ”comfortable” league position might just tempt some at the top to think about cashing in.
This may sound a bit gloomy but again it shows how far we have come, how we are gaining respect and how we are becoming the envy of a lot of our rivals, opposition fans and foreign owners around the country and YES around the world.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.

No.
We’re making up the numbers. Can’t see anyone wanting our players.
Nowt to worry about

Re: Batten down the hatches.
I like your use of the word desperate. If these clubs truly are desperate, then we should expect them to pay the going rate.
Tarkowski - Overs over 50million
McNeil - Offers over 50 million
Pope - Offers over 40 million
We will always be in that situation, where big clubs try and nick our players. This is why we really should be delighted with the recent contract extensions of messrs Wood, Barnes and Taylor.

Ah, but don’t forget that this is the new, much changed, meek and mild Messiah. Anything is possible now.Nonayforever wrote:I can really see Muriniho going for Barnes.

Some interesting observations in the OP. Going back throughout our history we've always been a selling club, a policy that was neccessary in order to balance the books. Way back in 1925 we sold our star player at the time Bob Kelly for £6,500 and then on New Year's Day 1937 sold our great centre-forward Tommy Lawton for the same amount to Everton.
Since then literally a procession of star players leaving the Club, particularly in the '60's and '70's, as Bob Lord ensured we made an Operating Profit most financial years at least. Now, however, there's a subtle difference in that for the first time ever we no longer HAVE to sell a player a season. Incoming finance is now sufficient to avoid having to lose our better players and long may that continue.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Re: Batten down the hatches.
Are all football fans doom and gloom in mindset? Threads about Sean going and our best players being poached.
I know you will probably say you are being realistic.
As long as we are in the top 10, I think our players will mostly stay and should anyone leave for huge amounts of cash, we are an attractive proposition to upcoming players.

Re: Batten down the hatches.
I don't think those at the top have ever been tempted by the idea of "cashing in". Since Charlie Austin, who has the club sold where the player wasn't wanting to move, the club didn't have a replacement, or the player was past his best and the club was better off taking the money?

Re: Batten down the hatches.
No doom and gloom here, I’m actually very upbeat, because this situation means that we are doing very, very well and much better than a lot of our rivals.LoveCurryPies wrote:Are all football fans doom and gloom in mindset?
As royboy has pointed out we do not need to sell, but even if we do it will be on our terms. I was dismayed when we sold Michael Keane, but that boosted our bank account and heralded the arrival of Tarks. The same could happen again as we have very capable players waiting in the wings in just about every position - except midfield where a cash boost would help us to recruit well.

Re: Batten down the hatches.
We won't be flogging any first team players in January.
Re: Batten down the hatches.
Vydra and Wells out. Bowen and Eze in. I'd be happy with that.
Definitely none of our key players leaving.

Any of our players playing regularly would be daft to leave, they would disappear into reserve teams.
