My mum reads me a couple of pages of this at 7 o' clock every night,I'm out like a light by five past...quite riveting stuff for a tired old 63 year old.

I used to read the yellow pages a lot until someone pointed out that there was no conspiracy. There was no reason for them being yellow and the codes didn't mean a thing.

Quicknick wrote:I've just read 'Savages' by Don Winslow. It was awful, although I'm told his earlier stuff is brilliant. For me, the best two crime writers in the world are James Ellroy and George Pelecanos.
Don Winslow s latest novel, The Border, the 3rd in his Mexican/USA trilogy has just been called the best thriller of the year by The Sunday Times.
Savages was made into a very successful film starring John Travolta and its use of underworld slang and language sets it apart from the mainstream American crime novelists.
Ellroy's underworld trilogy, the cold six thousand, American Tabloid and Bloods a Rover are incredible, as is the LA Quartet books.
Pelecanos is good, but his recent books aren't up to his usual standard. Dennis Lehane is also excellent.
I'm still struggling to see how you can class Savages as awful.
