The Man City game was just shite though, with nothing good or funny about it at all.

This is the only game in nearly 45 years of following Burnley where I’ve left before the final whistle. It was always a rush to get back to the last train I could get home from Manchester Road and I decided I wasn’t going to risk missing it after that sh**!

Just imagine the whoppers who surface 2 minutes after a defeat in the Premier league following those 2 games

The commentary on the City game when the fifth goes in amuses me. ‘This must be the first time a team has conceded five in successive home matches’.

Well actually it’s not even the first time I’ve seen Burnley concede five in successive home matches!

Think the email group may have been going, not sure. It was certainly around sometime in the Stan era.

Off the top of my head was the six against Hereford followed by five against Wolves?

One thing I recall about the City game was the home fans booing the PA bloke for playing Wonderwall.

Grim times, but I can't ever remember us doing too well v City anytime we played them.

Think the 3-3 at the Etihad, & 1-0 Turf win are my only positive memories from playing City ( off the top of my head )

Think we also got hammered away from home v Gillingham under Stan didnt we?
Was a killer journey remember it being dark when we left and being thoroughly p1ssed off.

I went to these two as a kid and the City match i remember walking up the steps and seeing across to a full cricket field stand for the first time ever (I'd been going for about 3 or 4 seasons at this point, even Preston and Blackpool didn't fill it) and i just knew it wasn't going to go well.

Then we lost 1-0 to a dodgy Kurt Nogan goal (3 in a row at home?) and finally went on an 11 game unbeaten run!

Very unlucky to lose to Preston but by then we’d made the crucial signing of Paul Cook

I didn't leave the City game early and there was no thoughts of the manager must go. Although Stan offered his resignation.

What I remember very well is Stan’s interview on Radio Lancs after the 5 0 defeat by Gillingham...He said “One thing’s for sure.Things can only get better”....
Next game we lose 6 0 !

Didn’t offer his resignation. After the Gillingham game he said he was going nowhere and would sort it out. He said there was a cancer in the club. After City he said he would speak to the chairman.

I've thought for a while that these games came before the Kilby investment and the signings of Davis and Mellon so I was surprised to see them on that link.

It was amazing how two further signings (Cook and Cowan) could completely transform a team.

By the time of the Gillingham and city games we were becoming immune. If I remember rightly city had a couple dismissed too... sure I remember the. Ruobing salt with we only need 9 men by the end.

At least a few saw such heavy defeats as necessary to get the club to wake up.

But we have continued to be smashed by City even when top of the first division in about 2000 or 2001 when I think we went to Maine Road and lost 5-0 or 5-1

Possibly but all the heartache and thrashings must take over, I only really remember those 2 matches off the top of my head, but like you mention theres others, even the more recent 1-1 is always blocked out.

I went to Gillingham on a Tuesday night on the supporters` coach. Pretty sure we were thumped 3-0, Hasenthaler player-manager and the coach broke down around 1am near Rawtenstall on the way home.

The same coach MACCA?

Gone from loving life in the 4th and 3rd tier, getting thumped by Gillingham, Richdale, Crewe and coincidently Man City, to being frustrated at losing to the Likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City in the premier league.

Indeed! special mentions for Bury away on Boxing Day!!!!! 4-0 down at half-time (2001ish?) but shoving it up Dyche on New Year`s Day 2-0 in 1992!!!!

sat in the Bob Lord and a Citeh fan jumped up when they scored. Decided he needed to leave and ran along the back of the seats. Got down to the front very safely. Then he got his brave head back and flicked the V's back at the stand .Then fell over the front of the stand and landed in a heap.
Probably the highlight of the game from my point of view.

That 6-0 stuffing, didn't their keeper, (Weaver?) pull off a couple of worldy saves before they scored the first?
Remember too, we were all over them for first 20 mins later that year when we lost 5-0.

Although I worked in an office near Gillingham at that time I was actually on holiday in Florida when this took place. Was I going to escape a ribbing ..... no way as my desk was littered with all the local match reports and there were even balloons with 5 and 0 tied to my chair and computer. I left that firm in 2007 but it would be nice to pop back and have a proper footie catch up !! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger eh ?

Absolutely. Tom Cowan and, in particular, Paul Cook coming in made the difference.

Was at that game, my main memory of it being spat on by a City fan after the game and was only about 8-9. Who spits on someone never mind a child dirty b*****d. Same thing happened at Elland Road, the Richard Duffy game. Never liked either since that day.

I went to watch Burnley youth v city youth at main road in some cup final, we won ! Anyway, the city knobs tried attacking our coach after the game - at a youth game !!!!!!

Watching the clip from the City game really sums up how good both teams are now.

Reckon the current Burnley team would beat that City team about 6 - 0. I also reckon the current City team would beat that City team by double figures....

Pinch yourself at how far we have come in 20 years.....

Would be entertaining seeing De Bruyne and co against those Burnley legends....if you like watching through your fingers

Spot on! We definitely turned a corner against PNE, even though we still lost. We battled and made chances (Mellon missed the easiest I seem to recall) but I felt we were very unlucky and came away with real hope! As CT said, Paul Cook arrived. along with Tom Cowan and although I believe the latter fell out with Stan (unfortunately) and didn't play that many games in the end, they both made a huge difference. Paul Cook was brilliant at covering every blade of grass and one minute was on the edge of the opposition box orchestrating an attack and next minute was tidying up a loose ball in our own area. Was Graham Branch also signed around this time as one of our replacements for those has beens and wage stealers who Stan called out and subsequently threw out, or not???

I think that was probably the Lancs Youth Cup Final around 1995. Phil Eastwood scores in a 1-0 win.

Played a few first team games for us but then dropped into non league where he played for a good few years

An odd memory from the City 6.0 defeat is pubs from Rawtenstall to Burnley being advised to shut in the afternoon by police as they had intelligence City fans were looking for trouble in revenge for that caused by Burnley fans at Maine Road earlier that season. Horrendous game!
