National / Northern rail
Is there a worse train network anyhwere in the world? Never mind Germany and Japan ive caught better and more reliable public transport in the middle of Africa.
All rush hour trains from Manchester to Burnley cancelled again. No refunds available. Can wait to see if next one bothers or catch the bus...
No wonder we are a nation of gas guzzlers... who in their right mind relies on this service regular?

Ive to write off and wait. For sake of a tenner I cant be arsed. But its the pain in the arse and inconvenience of it. Not to mention inability to plan.ClaretTony wrote:Northern Rail are shocking but you are entitled to compensation.
Back to driving here I think. Until diesel tax kicks in.

Re: National / Northern rail
If I’m going to Manchester I always use the bus because it’s both more convenient and cheaper for me but I’ve been caught up a few times with Northern Rail. It’s just unacceptable.
Re: National / Northern rail
You should be able to claim online via their website. I agree their service is appalling and the hassle in reclaiming is out of order.

If you don't write off and claim they will keep doing it. The only way too stop them is hit them in the pocket.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Ive to write off and wait. For sake of a tenner I cant be arsed. But its the pain in the arse and inconvenience of it. Not to mention inability to plan.

I missed a Preston connection and got £40 out of them, but don't forget to send registered post in case you don't get a reply.
Re: National / Northern rail
It costs a tenner admin costs, so is it worth spending time on the on line form for an 11 quid fare.
Northern rail are not fit for purpose.

Northern Fail.. Have they changed the 1800's rolling stock yet. Sure they said it would be updated soon.
Re: National / Northern rail
I caught the train home from Manchester on Sunday. Half the trains were cancelled with no explanation whatsoever. It's a joke what we have to put up with in the North, no way would it be allowed to happen in London and the South East.

If we all claim the compo we're entitled to would it improve the service?

If it cost less money to put extra staff on, to make sure there was enough for all trains than paying compensation for every train cancelled.dougcollins wrote:If we all claim the compo we're entitled to would it improve the service?
They would employ more staff.

Ended up on the next one which was delayed. The prior train was meant to have 4 carriages. The next one with an extra train load of people turned up with 2.conyoviejo wrote:Northern Fail.. Have they changed the 1800's rolling stock yet. Sure they said it would be updated soon.

I have a feeling they'd just keep churning out the compo. I don't believe there's any way back for them.

Definitely no admin charge when I did the delay repay.Siddo wrote:It costs a tenner admin costs, so is it worth spending time on the on line form for an 11 quid fare.

Re: National / Northern rail
Not saying its not worse Up North, but I used to get the 7:29 from Brighton to London, that famously didn't run on time once in a whole year.no way would it be allowed to happen in London and the South East

And remember folks, we pay more to subsidise the Rail Network now its privatised! Huzzah! Trebles allround.

Re: National / Northern rail
Northern Rail to lose franchise many people would say not before time, unlike most of their timetable.
https://uk.yahoo.com/news/manchester-li ... 0002.html
Money is on the way to upgrade the service with HS3,but obviously that will take time to come to fruition.

Re: National / Northern rail
For any change to happen you need to raise a complaint. Send Northern Rail a letter stating the details and how you were personally affected. State what, when, where. Etc, and provide photographic proof if you have it. Demand a refund for the disruption caused.
Next send Burnleys MP a similar letter and ask him to raise the poor service Northrtn are still providing in Parliament. He should take it up with Grant Shapps the Minister for Transport.
You should get a reply and it will be added to all the others as they keep them on file.

Re: National / Northern rail
The Rail Network was broken up to allow it to be sold off to private enterprise as it was expected/hoped that they would run it more efficiently than BRB. Given my job as the Network Control Manager for Royal Mail, prior to my retirement, I can tell you that there is a reason that Royal Mail switched to almost a total road borne operation some years back. When I left in 2016 they were operating just a handful of trains out of Willesden. In my view the franchises across the board haven't worked and some are clearly worse than others. Whether the answer was to renationalise we will now never know as you northerners voted in a racist tory.
Re: National / Northern rail
But I think you are also a northerner, unless of course you now have dual nationality??

I use GWR sometimes to travel with me mate to games down south.
They should remove the “G”
Spectacularly less than great.

In Northern Rail’s defence, I have seen that they are upgrading their entire fleet next year to those hand carts that 2 of you pump up and down.

Re: National / Northern rail
Stood on Sheffield Station on Sunday. Had half hour to wait for my train to Devon.
They announced two cancellations in that time.
Both Northern trains. One to Lincoln, the other to Manchester. Both because of staff shortages.
I've always had problems with Northern services.
They're crap.

Re: National / Northern rail
Much of the problem with "staff shortages" is because they only employ about 80% of the staff needed and expect/hope that the remaining 20% will be covered by overtime etc. When crew do not wish to do overtime or are ill etc then trains get cancelled. It is not just Northern that do this.

I have to catch two NR trains to get to the game from Wakefield today. The tossers have cancelled both of them.
I have very little confidence in getting home.
