Danny Drinkwater - City
Welcome back everyone!
Good to see him start last night. I desperately want him to do well for us, a permanent contract would mark a real positive step forward in our signings.
Hard to judge him last night, a nice free kick and a few good passes but not compelling, perhaps needs more game time. On the other hand Cork seemed to be much more visible and active.
Would like to see a westwood Drinkwater partnership before I make my mind up.

Drinkwater and Lennon looked short of matches. They were both sloppy with the ball too often. Opposition were different class so they can be forgiven.

It was a baptism of fire for him last night and not one to judge him on really.
We were mauled good and proper last night - one to cast to the distant memory banks and forgotten.

No way should you judge on last night. In fact we did very well in the first half but they scored out of nothing. A few touches here and there were very encouraging actually.
Watching City pass and move at time was so good you just had to admire it tbh. The first and third strike are pretty much unstoppable for a start...

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
It's just good to finally see him start a PL game, the 60 minutes will do him a power of good, and hopefully he'll now feel part of the 1st team squad,Man City isn't the game to judge him on,as alas they were back to their ruthless best last night, the one positive we can take from last night is Robbie netting in his brief cameo,to put it into perspective they brought Mahrez a £60m player off the bench, that's the difference between the teams with deep squads, and the middling sides such as ourselves, forget it and move on.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
Looked poor and disinterested
Tackling was weak and ineffective
Time to move on and concentrate on getting in Defours much needed replacement
Lennon was also poor with little output and effort
City are a class team but except for Jack Cork in cm we looked jaded.
After the Palace debacle I was expecting effort .
Several players didn't turn up and that is unacceptable
The loads of fans who bailed early were also disappointing.Anyone can support a winning team .

Couple of point in reply with this, Lennon seems an easy target for the boo boys, he was no worse or better than most of the team and created our only chance of the first half, which if Woods head hadn't got in the way could have made it 1.1.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 5:53 amLooked poor and disinterested

The old leaving early criticism! Just answer me one thing, who supports the team better, me, who shouts encouragement throughout the game, but leaves 10 mins early to make the drive home easier, or the guy in front of me, who ok, stays till the end, but shouts abuse at our players, and does nothing but moan all game.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
I'm disappointed with Pope this season. Great shot stopping with his feet but when is he going to stop longer range shots with his hands?
I m sure he will improve, but I'm concerned with his form and his body language.

Love a body language expert.
He could well be very unhappy at signing a new contract, being made number 1 for a Premier league side as well as getting a start for his country.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
I've never understood those who have a go at people for leaving early, especially when it's an evening KO at silly- o'clock.
Many will have gone straight from work. Some will have a long drive or need to catch public transport and others will have had enough by the time we were 4-0 down. Also, what has it got to do with anyone else?
You pays your money and you takes your choice.
Can you imagine being a neighbour of such people? Nosey busybodies sticking their nose into other people's business.

I don’t think people understand how quick City are at going forward when suggesting someone who has barely kicked a ball in anger for 2 years is being half hearted....DD did well considering this, certainly the first half. Was probably blowing through his backside in the 2nd

He seems to have a weakness with low shots right next to him. In choosing to get his hands down there instead of his feet. It's understandable being 6 foot 6 and a long way to get down.
He used his feet for those sort of shots against City so he's obviously realised this and worked on it in training.

Yes, an 8.15 kick-off and 10.00pm finish with school the following day. How poor that with nothing - but pride - at stake many people chose to leave at about 9.45.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 5:53 amLooked poor and disinterested

A good number of empty seats from 8.15 around me, I suspect that quite a few people didn't attend at all due to the ridiculous k.0. time, and I also suspect that many parents only took their children on because it was a "top" club. (i.e. wouldn't have taken school children on against Sheff Utd or Bournemouth). No surprise really that many headed home when they did.
I stayed till the end incidentally, but my daughter simply didn't attend, as she felt that it would have mean't getting home too late.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
Re Drinkwater it's difficult to judge after only an hour especially as Sean had uncharacteristically cast him into the deep end vs a team like Man City, however, looking at the post-match stats the stand out one is his poor pass completion rate. 10 out of 24 went to the opposition or out of play, the worst ratio on the pitch apart from Wood. Hardly what you would expect of a Premier League winner.
Also he looked lethargic and lacking energy even compared to Jack Cork & Jeff. If that was the best he could do after two months of training following his "accident" then it does not look likely that he will be selected ahead of Hendrick Cork and Westwood when all are available.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
On the subject of leaving early, it's not something I do but it is up to each individual. However, that was bloody late on Tuesday. I know three people who didn't even go because it was too late for them, all of them elderly people. And losing 3-0 going into the last part of the game was no real incentive to stay.
As for Drinkwater, not sure how anyone can judge him on that game. It must have been difficult stepping into that game against a City team in that form.

I wouldn't know how to make a judgement about DD in the context of that match, but I'm certain that we missed Ash W, as we did for the Palace game too.

Not easy getting thrown in against a team like that when you've barely played for 2 years. But if Cork and Westwood stay fit I don't see how Drinkwater is going to see much more action?

And Nick Pope was MoM at Watford where we won 0-3.
I can't fault Nick for City's first, second or third - and place the ball beyond the keeper as City's 4th and that will also always be a goal.
Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
I think a lot of people are just a bit bored with the whole Premier league "experience" tbh. The novelty of watching us get thumped by the big boys has well and truly worn off. And realistically the best we can now hope for is to finish mid-table, not exactly exciting is it?Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 11:11 amI was more concerned about the fans that turned up but didn't support the lads one bit Woodley.

Sadly CT, that's what a large percentage of idiots on this board will do. If you hand picked the best Burnley players ever to play for us and put them against that City team and the way they played they'd struggle. I'll start forming an opinion after 6 or 7 starts on Drinkwater. Whether he will get that chance is another discussion.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 10:45 amOn the subject of leaving early, it's not something I do but it is up to each individual. I was far more disappointed with the midfield on Saturday, against the mere mortals, Crystal Palace.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
Harsh and not entirely factual . He certainly looked at fault near post for their first ( though doubt he’d have saved it regardless ) the 2nd from the Ben Mee shocker wasn’t an error at all . 1 on 1 he smashed it hard Pope no chance to get anywhere near it, he was technically spot on but was never gonna get down for that . He’s claimed everything in the air cleanly this season and he’s worked hard in his left as he’s now able to “ whip” the ball hard with said foot

While the “ premier league experience “ is indeed, often little more than an antiseptic, almost “ Disney -esque” corporate bore fest played out in near silence. It does on occasion make it all worthwhile that we’re playing some of Europe’s finest with the added ( almost unthinkable ) bonus of watching us in Europe .

Hard to judge DD on that game.
What is obvious is that without Westwood’s speed of passing and pressing then we are lost in midfield

I agree if you hit the ball low to the keepers legs to a keeper of his size it is very hard to adjust your legs but he could kick it away as he has been doing that quite a lot this seasonQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 10:14 amHe seems to have a weakness with low shots right next to him. Couple of myths being exposed:
1. Burnley are a physical side - Barnes and Wood aside, genuine athleticism is one of the weakest aspects of our team. We need some pace and power, quite badly.
2. Burnley are a solid defensive side - Only the bottom 3 have conceded more than us this season.
Oh and Hendrick at #10 still doesn’t work, so please can that be the last time Dyche tries that one again.

Presumably the same people who would be bored by us travelling to Grimsby and Rotherham on a grim Tuesday evening?
An 8.15 kick-off against the League Champions is a pain in the backside, as are televised Saturday evening and Sunday games, but I wouldn't willingly swap our current status and opponents with anyone.
I just celebrate every match that we play in the PL, and hope that we can stay in there for as long as possible.
4-1 home defeat to Man City or goal-less draw at Spotland? Not a difficult choice for me .

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
SD must have been confident of getting a result (or been on the lash for a couple of days) playing City with 10 men. Hendrick was that little boy lost yet again in the space behind Wood. Never once has that routine worked but hey ho Sean, keep flogging that dead horse. Not helped by the lightweight midfield duo of Cork and Lennon, running around but easily knocked off the ball. When we did get the ball it was back to lumping it as we were unable to find a pass. The most worrying aspect is that all Burnley teams give it a go and get stuck in, particularly under the lights at Turf Moor. We never got close, never harried them, just let them stroke passes around all evening. Not surprisingly with that game plan we were absolutely hammered. DD is a good player but the guy was always on the back foot with his midfield colleagues under performing on the night. A poor Newcastle team at the weekend, chased, harried and hustled City, didn't give them a minute and nicked a draw. We were poor against Palace and even worse against City. It might have been a team costing millions against a team costing billions but that gap has been there for years and none of the top teams ever got let off the hook so lightly at Turf Moor, with barely a Claret whimper, as City did on Tuesday.

Re: Danny Drinkwater - City
Against a very good, strong Palace side - whose away record is outstanding - the stats suggest that we should have won comfortably.
We missed 2 golden opportunities, (Barnes and Wood), their keeper made and outstanding finger tip save and they cleared one off the line.
Pope didn't make a single save in 90 minutes and we absolutely gifted them their two goals. (The referee didn't help us much either).
Not saying it was a great performance against Palace but we weren't poor. We were simply inefficient at both ends of the pitch whereas at Watford - 7 days earlier - it was exactly the opposite.
It happens sometimes in football.

Can't really judge DD against that City team - on their day they are in the top 3 or 4 teams in Europe and even on our best day we wont be close to the top 50. Play him at Spurs and get him match fit for the games we stand a better chance in, the league has suddenly got tighter so we will need to start picking up some wins again.
