The Geordies hitting form just before we play them, maybe Steve Bruce will last more than a season after all.

You should always play to the whistle the Sheff Utd players just stopped assuming Shelvey was offside.

Steve Bruce, not only a very good CH over many years but a genius manager. Getting the Toon "back where they belong".

Re: Blades v Toon
So that's a new VAR variation.
Well done to the ref (for not blowing) and Shelvey (for ignoring the flag).

Could do with Brighton losing, but can't see either Sheff u or Newcastle troubling the bottom three, tbh.

Re: Blades v Toon
I get the feeling that the wheels are about to slowly come off for Sheffield, once injuries and suspensions kick in and once other managers have them sussed.
Just a hunch, and time will tell.

I honestly thought the ref had blown, and Shelvey was trying to say he had not heard it by pointing to his ears.dougcollins wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 9:04 pmSo that's a new VAR variation.

So are we 'linos dont flag for close decisions' or is that Europe? I don't think I know anything anymore.

Re: Blades v Toon
Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder talking to BBC Sport: "I'm involved now in a different sport, it's a new game to where I started as a 16-year-old. It's a different game. It's a completely different game and I've got to get my head around that.
"We were told at the start of the season that the linesman would keep his flag down, but he didn't. The referee was about to blow his whistle but he didn't. You can criticise my players for stopping, but even the goalscorer didn't look too interested. It's disappointing. It sucked the life out of the whole stadium. We're on the end of a poor one. The game has changed and it's quite sad.
"The players are disappointed. You're talking about a manager learning a new game but the players have to learn on the job too. It seems to be all over the place at the moment.
"It just doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel good to be involved in. It doesn't feel good when you score a goal. I can handle it if people make a mistake, we talk about it all evening out, but it's just taken a completely different feel.
"We'll get told it's new, we're all learning about it. I'm not sure I want to learn about it, I'm a bit fed up of it. It's a mistake by the linesman, why didn't he just keep his flag down? Five minutes later it happened twice and the referee blew up twice. What's the difference? Where's the consistency we're all after
Can’t argue with that really

Re: Blades v Toon
The rules briefed to the managers and players for offside was;
Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is not certain whether the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, the assistant should delay indicating the offence until the phase of play has concluded.
Where there is a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity and the assistant referee is certain the attacker actively involved is in an offside position, then the assistant should indicate the offence immediately.
In both of these situations the referee should wait to blow the whistle until the immediate phase of play has ended.
Now if the linesmen in his mind was certain it was offside then he correctly raised his flag and the ref correctly let play continue.
The linesmen may have made a huge error in thinking it was definitely offside and I get it is confusing for the players but their professionals and their mindset should be 100% focused on playing to the whistle and ignoring the linesmens flag in line with how VAR was briefed to them at the start of the season

You’re entirely correct Mr Advocate
It’s an incredibly crap rule though - if the linesman was correct and it really was offside would result in a booking for Shelby for kicking the ball away
The world’s gone mad

Re: Blades v Toon
I hate VAR but if we're gonna slag it off might as well be accurate about what we're having a pop at.
As for football used to being a simple game Funky with reference to offside the new application of it still is. You just play to the whistle and anything close where a goal is concerned will be cleared up by VAR
I dont like it and think it spoils the game but its pretty straightforward and a lot easier than some of the older interfering with play rules that were very subjective and grey
