The Bald Eagle Jim Smith has passed away at 79. Former manager of a number of clubs including Blackburn and Derby.

Yep, he certainly did.
When I lived in Nelson many years ago, my next door neighbour was related to him in some way.

Met him once at a reserve game when he was at Blackburn.
He was once asked when he was Derby manager why he’d signed Paul McGrath. He said it was because he didn’t have an agent and he didn’t have a mobile phone.

Seemed quite respected in football circles, people usually commented on his coaching and managerial skills. One of the old school.

RIP Jim Smith
I always liked Jim Smith. One of the old school managers. He used to go mental on the bench, and a lovely shade of red in frustration.... but no matter how things were going remained a Gentleman and was always willing to chat football, and one of many who had a huge soft spot for Burnley despite his M65 connections.

I remember us beating 'Jim Smith's' Derby, in the cup!

In his autobiography he recalled phoning John Bond, Burnley manager at the time, about striker Billy Hamilton's availability.
He was stunned to hear Bond telling him that all Hamilton did was score goals.
Needless to say he signed the striker that could only score goals and he didn't disappoint.

I was only thinking of Jim Smith on Saturday. I caught a bit of Soccer AM and the there was an Oxford fan on as a guest and mentioned him.

Boxing Day 77 or 78. 3-0 down to Rovers at half-time and Jim Smith walking across the pitch and clapping their fans and me going to school in a Rovers enclave...

Yeah but only after Rovers missed a penalty that would have made it 4-0. In those days I took Burnley's results personally.

Great story.
