OK we all know it’s overhyped and far too commercial, but what are your best memories of Christmas?

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
In the late fifties and early sixties I lived in Helmshore and there was a special evening when my father would take myself and my little sister to see the crib next to the war memorial in Haslingden, it was a magical time. The town has changed the world has changed I was shocked when I first saw the word Xmas I thought my goodness they are taking Christ out of Christmas what next, anyway happy Christmas everybody and I wish you all a peaceful New Year.

Family get togethers but it has been totally ruined with over commercialisation.
Kick it back into December, by law if necessary.

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
I always have a laugh to myself when I hear all the 'I hate Christmas' people going on. It's like a fashion statement that people wear like a badge of honour. Oh no, is it November? I must start telling people how much I hate Christmas. I'm not a Christian but I do think it's a nice time of year and it's kind of magical. My only gripe is I wish the shops and stores would leave it alone until at least November, I really don't want to see Christmas trees in September. I actually like (most) Christmas songs and watching kids opening presents on the morning. And doing absolutely sod all for the best part of 2 weeks is good too. Christmas dinners - they're good.
The down side slightly is for my wife - her mum died on 27th December and her dad on 21st December (albeit 32 years apart). There is always a slight touch of melancholy but that's life I suppose.

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
I probably enjoyed the years being a Dad the most. I always woke really early because I couldn't wait to see my kid's faces and would spend the morning putting batteries in their new toys and constructing railways layouts, etc.
If you've got young kids...enjoy those years!

While I know wikipedia can't always be relied upon, this looks like a pretty decent round up of the debate surrounding the word Xmas. Surprise surprise, the blasphemy line is one peddled by the Yanks, ignoring evidence that the X in Xmas is actually Greek shorthand for Christ.LordBob wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 9:05 amIn the late fifties and early sixties I lived in Helmshore and there was a special evening when my father would take myself and my little sister to see the crib next to the war memorial in Haslingden, it was a magical time. I used to love going the pub with my dad and any other males in the family between 12 and 3 on Xmas day. Then magically everything was prepared for eating when we got back.
Travelling on xmas day doesn't allow it anymore unfortunately.

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
I must admit I'm not a fan of Xmas but the one I really don't like is Santa Claus - it was always Father Christmas when I was young and I still pull up my kids and grand kids when they say Santa. I realise it's not 'wrong' to say Santa, I just don't think it's traditional in this country. It seems like every country has their own word for the old guy but ours seems to have been nicked.Sausage wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 10:03 amWhile I know wikipedia can't always be relied upon, this looks like a pretty decent round up of the debate surrounding the word Xmas. Re: Christmas.....the good bits
I've always loved Christmas and even more so now we have two young ones. Love the music, the decorations, parties, plays and pantomimes, the "magic" for the kids, the drinking, eating and time off work as well as all the sport and the once a year specials and movies that I won't watch any other time of year.
It's a month of relaxing, having fun and making memories as well as remembering those (people and years) that have gone before.
Only down side for me is when it's all over and getting back to normal, as well as the following two months of freezing weather, ice and the mess / hysteria caused by and after snow (love the actual snowing part though).

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
TBH, I always openly say I hate Christmas (even though I'm married to a self proclaimed Mrs Christmas! Which makes things somewhat frosty at times!), but actually it's not true. I don't hate Christmas per se, I hate what they've done to it. My elder brother's birthday is December 15th and when we were kids that's when we started to think about Christmas and get the decorations out and tbh I don't think you saw too many trees etc before that date. I actually enjoy Christmas as in 23rd, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 27th and if people stuck to that, the magic and sparkle and ultimate enjoyment possibly wouldn't have been sullied and totally ruined to the point where these days I would happily outlaw the whole shamozzle as it's absolute garbage!

Re: Christmas.....the good bits
I can't say I get particularly excited about Christmas, even though my birthday is on the 23rd. It's just a good excuse to get friends and family together and go with the flow with two nephews who still love Santa to bits. It means a lot more meals / nights out though which is a plus.

Greta Thunberg is trying to ban Father Christmas from going down chimneys. Apparently, she hates his carbon footprints.

In the 70s the Boxing Day match was the first fixture I looked for. It’s what made Christmas. Happy days
