It's not going to be too long before the end of this astonishing era.

I'd love to hear their opinions of our so-called leaders these days. Harry Patch, one of the last - if not the last - of the Tommies had nothing but contempt for politicians.

Gone are the days when most major Politicians had served in uniform ..... Ted Heath was a Major in the Royal Artillary, Dennis Healey was a " Beach-master " at the Anzio landings, Tony Crosland served as a Parachute Captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and Roy Jenkins worked on the codebreaking team at Bletchley Park .....

After University, Jo Swinson worked as a Publicity Manager for an Independent radio station for 3 years before entering Parliament .... :D

It's easy to have contempt for decision makers like politicians or referees. Most people think they can do a better job, until they try it.

You suggest we start a war just so Jo's CV looks better?

I'm quite glad there are no wars that the masses have to serve in.

Bonkers to hark back to these days as though it was somehow better. Being involved in a war doesn't make you a better leader.

Perhaps not, however, being in an environment surrounded by others, from various backgrounds, who may or may not require your guidance and help certainly makes you appreciate other people and their everyday problems and is a great experience.
Too many politicians are career politicians and, unfortunately, the have a very blinkered view of life, however, they always think that they know better than anyone else. The same thing happens with a lot of people who end up in management because they are happy to get the money, however, they do not manage properly and cause many people to leave their jobs. My son works for such an organisation and this led to 38 Paramedics per month leaving their jobs in the most densely populated area of England.

Not a war, but it would help if they had business experience(small and large) leadership experience in the world away from politics, people who had worked their way through the ranks to senior positions in something. People with a variety of skills and understanding. What is on offer is simply discustiing

We have entered a world where presentation is more important than substance. Where every comment is analysed and the best/worst connotation placed upon it depending on the ideology of the reporter/broadcaster. A world where it is easier to take cheap shots at your opponents than try to explain your own intentions. A world where internet trolls post all sorts of lies that are instantly believed and reposted by thousands of others. A world where honesty is laughed at and derided by political opponents and their media supporters and nobody believes you are being honest because they now believe all politicians are liars.

No, rather a broader point about breadth of Life experience and it's value ...

Not sure McGuiness and Adams play doubles when it comes to tennis.

I think the point really is that so many MPs have done none jobs and have no life experiences before politics
IMO one of those with a life before politics has left mainstream to try for London mayor (Rory Stewart)

The best Libdem leader of recent times was Pantsdown a former Para . It’s not that being a soldier /officer makes you a good candidate but it gives a real life grounding in having to get along with different people for the common good .Also gives a strong perspective . Though different times and naturally the ultra modern era has less and less ex servicemen .

I've said similar in other posts.
In the past, now distant past, politicians brought with them some life experience. Whether that be in the military, solicotors, postmen, farmers, doctors, shop stewards. When they talked about man, at least they had a grasp of who he was.
Modern professional politicians learn party speak, before they even understand life. It appears that they arent judged on what they can bring to the party, but whether they are willing to toe the party line.

Only 3 of these great men left. One politician was certainly right when he spoke of them. The Few.

Can we refrain from our the politics on this thread? This is about a man who along with "The Few" defended our country bravely and not a thread for political crap and point scoring. RIP

He may well have been though never seen him in uniform so it would a “beret check “ though this doesn’t really alter the point as such

The OP started it!

We may despise our politicians for their deceit but they have to deal with other politicians, not just in the UK but around the world. If you don't have a bit of a dark side how can you deal with the likes of Putin?

I think you'll find I was talking about our so- called leaders in general.
Topclaret decided to be a little more specific.
