Exit Polls - question

I'm a bit of a political novice, but as I understand it an exit poll is something to determine how someone voted by simply asking 'who did you vote for' as a person leaves their polling station. Is that right?
So there's nothing to stop someone lying or anything?
So what's the point?
Why not just wait for the results? What benefit does an exit poll have?
Educate me, please.

They can sometimes be very accurate and people want to know as soon as possible.
Yes, there isn't anything to stop people from lying but the people who design polls are, sometimes, very clever and they can factor this into their polls.

I'm a bit of a football novice but as I understand it the newspapers have coverage of football even on days when there are no matches but simply pundits saying who they think is going to win? There's nothing to stop them getting it wrong?
So what's the point? Why not just wait for the results of the matches? What benefit does a pre-match article have?

There's no reason for it.
Think of it like during a transfer window. Alan Nixon will mention a player on twitter and numerous folk can't wait to tell everyone on here.

It's a pride thing apparently. Usually, Sunderland are the first over the line, but the
guy who ran it has moved to Newcastle electoral area and the battle is on.
Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

It's not just the general public who are interested. Exit polls will also get fed to banks for instance and the early rise of sterling was most likely due to exit polls being fed to banks.

There was no early rise of sterling. Unless you mean 21:59 instead of 22:00.
