Ashley Westwood

Post by jdrobbo » Sat Dec 14, 2019 4:58 pm

What an absolute talent. Delighted that he is back in the team and long may he stay there! Special mention to for a solid performance from Jack Cork, but for me Westwood was by far our standout player. He is our dynamo and he gets us ticking.

Barnes added a lot too.

Taylor does when he's here.

Just shows we've got one team and if one or two of those links are missing, it all falls apart.

I was going to add..

Jack Cork played better than Westwood today.

It was an absolutely diabolical performance which has been masked over by a good set piece.

Newcastle had several key players missing and were also absolutely diabolical.

1/10 all round.

I thought Westwood was our best player today, which isn't saying much. That game didn't deserve the title of a Premier League match, it was ferkin awful. I just hope there are three teams worse than us come the end of the season.

Cork played better than Westwood apart from I've never seen anyone give the ball away so much in one game. Oh hang on, I forgot about Hendrick.

Disgraceful from professional players. Newcastle were poor, a good job really.

Westwood was no better than bang average today. Poor first half, bit better second but Cork was easily the star of the midfield today.

Not a good game but we deserved to win.

We’ve had plenty of wins like today in the Premier League, bits and pieces games where we need to be solid and take one of the very few chances on offer. We cancelled each other out and got the win.

Don’t get the negativity really.

As for Westwood, we miss him badly when he’s not in the team. Nobody was anything above ‘Ok’ today but we won so many second balls today and in recent weeks Cork, Hendrick and Drinkwater simply haven’t done. That’s the key thing he adds, for me.

I thought Westwood played well today. He sits in front of the back four and always shows for the ball which gives the defence another option besides just lumping it forward. He seems to always have plenty of time which is the sign of a talented player. Without him there is always a gaping hole between our defence and midfield. Also Cork really got stuck in today even though he does get knocked off the ball much too easily.

McNeil had a couple of stand out moments, but Westwood provided the vital assist,so he edged it for me,Corky sounded much better today but he fluffed his lines in the 2nd half, thankfully it didn't prove costly,as the Toon wasted their one real sight of goal.

We were pretty poor all things said and Westwood no better than mediocre ,but his industry is a plus .They were awful and I don’t remember a shot on target for them, ah yes late when we had Pieters down ? Cork missed a great chance ( though on his left ) for us and apart from the goal of course I think we had just the 1st half McNeil effort . The passing was very wayward and though no lack of graft and will to win we were so devoid of creativity it was painful . McNeil being our only outlet . That said we just about deserved it and we looked a lot more solid with the returnees . Taylor will be another important jigsaw piece, but we are literally aching for a quality CM and/or some right sided pace

It was good to have Westwood back and he played quite well but I wouldn't say he was outstanding today. For starters, Cork performed better than him.

The outstanding performer today was Tarkowski.

We play better with Westwood in the side. He keeps and wins balls. Brady just gives it away constantly. Thought Westwood and McNeil had good games yesterday.

He’s the best midfielder we have seen in a Burnley shirt this century

He is the fastest passer of the ball, quick thinking and always knows what he is going to do when he receives the ball. He is the first one to attack the ball when we lose it (only equalled by Sir Dean Marney). Every successful move we make, other than the punt upfield, goes through him

He is the best corner taker we have had - ever - no one comes remotely close

His only problem is that he has a nose bleed in a goal scoring opportunity

Why criticise him - we couldn’t buy better. If he had a foreign name he’d be priceless

Westwood probably our most important player in the last 18 months - along with Dwight.

What we've really missed about Westwood is his dead ball delivery. Hendrick's taken a few corners in his absence which have been pretty good, but none have had the sort of whip and pace that Westwood produced on Saturday.

Other than that, we weren't really a lot better or worse for the return of Westwood so I suspect we can get a bit carried away with how much extra he added (good player though he is; I've always been a fan). The game was almost a carbon copy of the Palace game, save that we managed to nick a goal from one of those corners, and Newcastle didn't anything resembling the threat of Zaha on the counter. Same strengths and weaknesses in the way we played.

Sorry but if you're talking about natural ability then he doesn't come close to Steven Defour.

I know that you're a big fan of Hendrick but if you can't see that Westwood brings a lot more to our midfield then you're seriously blinkered. Westwood plays the quick balls into the channels which has been an enormous part of our recent success. He adds the fantastic set piece deliveries which you mention and he presses the opposition with real intensity.

The difference on Saturday was noticeable even if the overall team performance wasn't the most rounded. We looked a lot more solid without the ball and Cork had his best game for a while which I suspect isn't a coincidence.

Hendrick's a decent player but you're going to struggle to convince me, and I suspect many others, that he is as effective as Westwood in midfield two.

Not just his dead ball delivery but also the fact that his is by some distance the best passer of the ball in the team.

Don't think Westwood's corners particularly have "whip and Pace". It's his knack to get them to drop in the right place and drop relatively vertical in the last part of their flight so defenders need to be under it as it's not going to fly across the box at a convenient height to be defended. It's a trick we have but I guess will be found out.

This isnt about the comparison between Hendrick and Westwood. I've been a big advocate of Westwood for years, right back 18 months beyond when he was a scapegoat for many of our supporters. I don't need anyone to tell me what he offers us, and for what it is worth I agree - I'd pick him in midfield before Hendrick.

Where I'd disagree is the assessment of our relative performance on Saturday compared with the Palace game - and therefore by extension the extent to which Westwood made a decisive difference. We were ineffective as an attacking/possession based unit in both games, and whilst Newcastle created less, they were without their two first choice wide players whereas Palace had Zaha. But as an attacking force if anything we were more toothless than against Palace.

Not a slight on Westwood - like I say, I'm a fan. But the point is that rather than any single individual tipping the balance on Saturday, it was those fine margins dyche talks about going our way - and a higher quality set piece delivery allowing us to capitalise on one if the few attacking opportunities we had.

Luckily for us he’s not “Steven Defour injured” either.

Westwood probably our most important player in the last 18 months - along with Dwight.
Only cost £5m too.
True, we’ve prob missed the boat on European players too now seeing as Pepe cost £72m !
