Pope 6 - spectator, decent handling when necessary
Bardsley 6 - barely noticed him, which is a good thing for a right back at the moment.
Tarkowski 8 - a monster
Mee 7 - poor distribution first half but much better second and a solid display
Pieters 5 - one decent tackle at the end but dreadful distribution all game
Hendrick 4 - dreadful performance
Cork 9* - excellent display
Westwood 5 - very meh. Poor first half. Passed backwards far too often. Bit better second half.
McNeil 7 - think he was pretty much tripled up on but did pretty well in the main.
Wood 5 - really poor but got the winner
Barnes 6 - did alright

truly awful game, close to zero entertainment on show but a huge win for us against a team we usually struggle to beat

Pope 6
Bardsley 6
Tarkowski 7
Mee 7
Pieters 6
Hendrick 5
Cork 7 much better. Looked more confident but still a bit lightweight and some sloppy passes. He was more positive though. More performances like this please. Mom
Westwood 7 showed what we missed
McNeil 7
Barnes 6
Wood 6

Newcastle didn’t look to have any more quality in their side than we did. Their players went down like bowling pins. Thought we were much better than of late and I enjoyed the game.

Pope 6 nothing to do
Bardsley 5
Tarks 7
Mee 6. Did well to continue after Carroll assault
Pieters 4. Another shocker
Hendrick 4 never in the game
Cork 6 ok
Westy 6 inc 1 for the assist
McNeil. 6 not his best game but still better than most
Wood 5 inc 1 for goal
Barnes 6. Gave 100% as usual

Very poor display against weak opposition

Seems strange to me that against a team who have been in really good form we kept a clean sheet, restricting them to a couple of half chances and not a single shot on target, and we have defenders getting 4s and 5s.

probably because of the amount of times they gave the ball away by aimlessly hoofing it

Maybe, but in my view if we keep a clean sheet the defence has done it's job, I don't particularly like to see them playing passes, losing possession and conceding goals (as in previous 2 games). I'm pretty sure Dyche had instilled it in them after last week's shambles that we mustn't keep giving the ball away cheaply..

Staggering some of the low marks - there were no 4s and no 5s out there today in dreadful conditions but I see Pieters & Hendrick, as usual, are being targeted.

Pope 7 did everything ok
Bardsley 7 solid
Tarkowski 9 immense
Mee 8 decent
Pieters 5 a real weak link
Hendrick 6 worked hard
Westwood 8 what a difference he makes, always keeps us in control
Cork 8 heavily involved
McNeil 8 tried to make things happen
Barnes 6 meh
Wood 6 meh with a goal

Sorry CT but I think Hendrick flatters to deceive. He runs around a lot and looks busy but he makes hardly any tackles and is often just jogging back into a space and marking nothing. How Vydra and Drinkwater are at least not replacing him after an hour or even starting in place of him, defies me..

fully understand and a fair point, but there were plenty of opportunities for a simple pass to be played into feet and they didn't take them, defensively we were very good picking up second balls, impossible to win the first one against Carroll tbh. We aren't in the 4th division anymore though, I would expect our defenders to be able to play a 20 yard pass more accurately than the 50 yard punt they seem to try.....

Pope 6 because he had nothing at all to do
Bardsley 6 good steady performance but why did he kick the ball when we were attacking, then later on not when pieters was down, plus side some decent deliveries
Pieters 4 terrible in possession absolute light weight for the Gayle chance
Tarks 8 dominant
Mee 7 decent solid performance
McNeil 7 our real attacking threat, carried the ball well like to be inventive
Hendrick 5 I like Jeff and I think we are so much more solid with him on the right giving the extra man in midfield. But on the ball, despite trying to do things he wasn’t up to scratch today
Cork 8 mom excellent lively, pressing performance, nicking the ball and shimmying his way to nearly a goal and a 9 out of 10
Westwood 6 busy, glad he was back
Barnes 7 some good hold up play despite being out numbered
Wood 7 he scored one and nearly two others with his driving run in the first half and then a clever run and a flick header in the second.

We’ve certainly played better but we were never under any real threat by them and had a number of chances to score more. Also considering Newcastle always had a spare defender I thought barnes and wood did well and surprised (though i shouldn’t be) by some of the lower marks for those two.

Just checked the passing accuracy and it was decent especially considering the conditions. For the back four average was 75%. In relation to all outfield players 42 (12.2%) were long balls out of 344 total passes.

Pope 6 Good catches but a rare drop good distribution
Bardsley 6 grafted and always involved
Tarkowski 7 probs mom
Mee 7 decent against a very average outfit
Pieters 6 again worked hard got the odd cross in
Hendrick 5 ran around a lot
Westwood 7 good energy and stopped the rot but no messiah
Cork 7 one of his better games big missed a beauty
McNeil 7 our only creative outlet
Barnes 6 On his arse most of the game
Wood 6 + 1 for goal seemed to on the left wing at times?

A grim affair but we stifled a very mediocre team and just about deserved it .

When you look at the conditions and you stop a team in good form from having one shot on target you can’t ask for much more.

Not sure how Mee stayed on after the assault and Corky was magnificent and if he sticks the chance away it’s great stuff...was very unlucky

Not much football played, by either side.
Thought we defended well though.
A clean sheet after the way we've given it away recently was most welcome.
Important 3 points.

Pope 6 - Not much to do, did make a mess of one catch, but caught a few others.
Bardsley 6 - Some sloppy passing, but solid defensively.
Tarkowski 7 - Another good solid game.
Mee 7 - Same as Tarks, did what he had to with minimum fuss, also won a few good headers at the back post from set pieces.
Pieters 6 - Hit and miss. He definitely seemed to be trying to be more positive and made some good runs forward, but his final ball let him down.
Hendrick 5 - Incredibly sloppy and seemed out of position an awful lot.
Westwood 6 - Worked hard all game.
Cork 7**- Thought he was the better of the two today and it was good to see him actually pushing forward. Was a lovely move where the keeper saved it.
McNeil 7 - Touch of class. You honestly feel like something will happen everytime they get the ball to him and he drives at the defenders.
Barnes 6 - Was a thorn in the side of the Newcastle defense all game and you could see he was getting under their skin.
Wood 7 - Thought he was actually pretty good. He game the wingbacks an option with the way he constantly ran the channels all game and in the 6 yard box he is lethal.

Of course conditions is a factor. Anybody who has played football competitively at a reasonable standard knows that.

Pope 6 only 1 fumble from.a cross
Bardsley 6 nearly played us into trouble when Peiters was down
Tarkowski 7
Mee 6
Pieters 5 really restricts us going forward
Hendrick 5 out of position a lot, created zilch, poor first touch a few times
Westwood 7 everywhere and another set play assist
Cork 7 great run and shot, and even passed it forwards a couple of times. Best game in a while
McNeil 7
Barnes 6 wins free kicks eases pressure
Wood 6 the goal and that was it

A poor game to watch, and we created very little.
Hoof after hoof, even when between the lines or we stole possession, we went backwards first.
Thank goodness Newcastle had 7 out and all their creativity to boot.
The result WAS the most important thing, but it really was as bad as I've seen in a while
Just hope the weather was an issue and the performance levels lift now bodies are coming back.

Pope 7
Didn't have much to do to be fair. Managed to catch a ball few times but also had one minor mistake when he let the ball loose.

Pieters 6
I thought he did alright for most of the game. However, it's just like Stoke fans said - he has a mistake in him. Got beaten twice and luckily Newcastle didn't capitalize (thanks to poor finishing from Gayle). His distribution was average at best.

Mee 7
All over the place in the first half where Carroll managed to win every duel against him. Big improvement in the second part of the game.

Tarkowski 8
Had some sloppy passes at the beginning at was beaten by Hayden I think but was superb for the rest of the game.

Bardsley 8 MOTM
Great display. Did pretty well against Atsu and had some great clearances and blocks.

McNeil 7
They marked him pretty well but he still managed to show some of his skill.

Westwood 7
Average at first but as most of our player much improved after the break. Had some nice passes and got the assist as well.

Cork 7
Great at times (reminded me of his form two season ago) but also sloppy on few occasions. Unlucky no to score.

Hendrick 6
Good on defensive duties and helped Bardsley alot. Anonymous in terms of going forward.

Barnes 6
If it wasn't for him making a foul every two minutes and fighting with their defenders I wouldn't have realized he was playing.

Wood 7
Similar to Barnes but at least he scored a winner.

Rodriguez 6
Didn't play enough.

Pope. 7. Good control of area.
Bardsley. 7. Some lack of quality but really put in a shift
Tarks. 8. Immense under some pressure
Mee. 7. Very solid
Pieters. 6. A couple of slips but overall good, don't understand the low scores for him
McNeil. 8.mom. Our only creative outlet and a very good one at that
Cork. 8. Perhaps his best game this season
Westwood. 7. Too many backwards passes at 0
0
Hendrick. 7. Very much like Pieters, don't understand the low scores
Barnes. 6. Not much came off for him today
Wood. 6. Despite the goal, a quiet game

Decent team effort all round

Pope 7 Caught a few high balls, distribution improving but seldom troubled.

Bardsley 6 Solid but he isn't a winger!
Tarkowski 8 Another good solid game.
Mee 8 Brave as ever and saw Carroll off in spite of being bashed again and again. Extra point for resilience.
Pieters 5 Will he ever become a true Dyche type player?

Hendrick 6 Struggles to control the ball when it comes at him fast but worked hard.
Westwood 7 Always aware of which pass pay off. His crosses are 1st class.
Cork 8.5 MotM bossed the middle and although he made a few errors often recovered well.
McNeil 7 Improves all the time. His cross from an impossible position was class.

Barnes 6 Struggled today but always a threat.
Wood 7 Not really in the game and then he scored! Is his speed improving?

A game of poor quality in poor conditions, between two average sides. Will take a scruffy 1-0 and 3 points all day long. Both teams cancelled each other out and it was a quite turgid stop start game. No real stand out performances it was a typical Burnley team performance, full of endeavour and a solid framework, but not much quality, Westwood’s corner and Corks’run the exceptions.Job done. Hitting 21 points before Christmas is a tremendous marker. UTC

Of course conditions is a factor. Anybody who has played football competitively at a reasonable standard knows that.
Of course if it's constantly thumped forward or out to the wings in the air

Awful awful game but if you play on the floor then wind is not a factor
Needs some serious investment in the summer as watching this week in week out interest will drop and learn how to pass a ball.
Feel sorry for that ball today it must be knackered

Seems strange to me that against a team who have been in really good form we kept a clean sheet, restricting them to a couple of half chances and not a single shot on target, and we have defenders getting 4s and 5s.
I agree, and also the super low marks for Hendrick...he's out of position & works his socks of every game, he does a lot of the dirty work that seems to go completely unnoticed on here...i don't mark because i watch on my computer.

Pope - 6 - Nothing much to do....claimed a few crosses...almost an absolute howler at the end which we got away with

Bardsley - 6 - steady away up against their nippy winger

Pieters - 6 - some good stuff...some not so good stuff...clear from some comments around me he is quickly becoming the go to scapegoat

Tarkowski - 7 - couple of dodgy moments first half....much better 2nd...kept Carroll quiet in horrendous conditions

Mee - 8 MOM - As above without the "dodgy" first half

Hendrick - 6 - typical workmanlike performance....needs to work on his clearances from right back position as they go straight to their feet and invites pressure

McNeill - 5 - tried but seemed to crowded out whenever he got the ball...would have liked him to stay a bit wider at times

Westwood - 7 - Ran Ben Mee close to MOM for me...much more composed than what we have seen in previous weeks

Cork - 7 - some good work...deserved a goal when he dispossessed Longstaff

Wood - 7 - tough conditions extra point for the goal

Barnes - 6 - as above...but didn't get the goal
