I wondered how on hell he'd got a Premier League game and that performance has left me seriously worried about the quality of refereeing coming in. Can't think of anything positive to say about that performance.

Was very whistle happy until we scored then let the geordies get away with almost everything. Almost caused a mass brawl with leaving our player injured for such a long period. As for only booking Carroll, I’ll have see tha again.

I also thought he was pretty good for the best part of an hour. Then he seemed to lose the plot. Haven't seen the goal back yet but Newcastle are unhappy that their player was fouled when he played the ball out for a corner. Then he failed to stop play for Pieter's injury, which I wouldn't have a problem with in the slightest if he hadn't stopped the game in the first half for a Newcastle injury of similar severity. It's impossible to comprehend how someone can show such inconsistency. Then there was the clear shoulder charge into Pieters from behind which nearly led to a Newcastle equaliser.

How there was only 3 minutes added time in the first half I will never know, but I won't complain about that.

He let them get away with two late ones on Tarkowski 1st half and Carroll should have seen red for leading with the point of his elbow into the side of Mees head

I think most people have covered what needed to be said already on this thread. If he is to continue as a referee he needs to be in charge for the whole game, not delegating the responsibility to a senior player on the pitch, after an ok start, Andy Carroll took over refereeing, this will happen week in week out if he doesn’t stamp it out.

He did Ok, overall i thought.

There wasn't too much in the game, and whilst he could have been harsher with both Joelinton and Carroll, both of whom on another day could have been sent off, he didn't get anything massively wrong and I didn't especially think that he lost control to Carroll.

The fact the game went on after Pieters went down is nothing to do with the ref. It wasn't a head injury and it was for Newcastle to put the ball out. To their shame, they didn't.

EDIT - to add a neutral view, Le Tissier on Sky has said pretty much exactly the same thing. He did fine for a debutant.

Our captain Mee went mad at one of our players for kicking the ball out for an injured Newcastle player earlier in the game. Was that to his shame too?

...but we kicked it out, because Newcastle asked us to.

We'd have been within our rights to keep playing on that occasion, and if having done so Newcastle had done the same later on, then I'd have no complaint.

But we did put it out, and so Newcastle should have done the same. It's a question of basic decency and sportsmanship.

Shite,

probably didn't help with the introducation of VAR making things even more complicated for less experienced refs.

He seemed to lose control/authority following the incident where 2 Newcastle players bumped into each other and he gave a foul against us. I think all the players found it perplexing and realised from that moment on that he really didn't have much idea so it all degenerated. He even caused controvery by originally giving our goal scoring corner as a goal kick which was bound to infuriate their players!

Was quite obvious what had happened from the Longside, probably a good deal less obvious at pitch level, looking from a different angle where the players were in the way.

But players are always in the way. I presume that's why ' positioning' is given a mark.

Indeed, but unless you're suggesting referees should have the foresight to always know exactly what the ball and players will do next so as to ensure their viewpoint is entirely unimpeded - which is of course impossible - I think we've got to accept that a ref will, from time to time, find his view obscured, and therefore not criticise him for it.

There were 4 players or so around the ball, Newcastle played got bumped and went down, and that's what the ref saw. A mistake, but hey, we all make them, particularly when we have to make decisions with less than perfect evidence.

I always wonder whether or not those making valid criticism have ever refereed at any level at all.
Players make mistakes which can unexpectedly affect your positioning, some also have the skill to do the unexpected, which also affects your positioning. You try to anticipate, however, this is not always possible and you will occasionally have your view blocked. This being the case, you should not make a decision unless you are absolutely certain you have seen exactly what happened. I think that, with that incident on Saturday, he probably should have played on but he perhaps was clear in his own mind as to what happened because he was closer to it than any of us.

I've only refereed a few times, and it was bloody difficult and thankless work.

Re: the point about not making a decision unless certain - arguably that's impossible, because in effect not making a decision is to decide that no foul was committed, and had the ref done that and been wrong there'd have been no forgiveness. I imagine tonnes of decisions in any game are based upon a partially obscured view, or something in his peripheral vision - and using his skill and experience to work out what "probably" happened in each case. But it does involve an element of guesswork.

True in some respects and there are elements of guesswork, particularly when you get a double ricochet and players are very close to each other etc.
Having said that, there should be no guesswork when it comes down to a major decision such as a penalty, it is what you have seen that matters and if you are uncertain you do not give the decision. This now is affected at the top level by VAR when the VAR operator will ask the referee what he has seen, he will then look at the incident himself, bearing in mind what the referee has told him, and should only change the decision if he considers that the referee has made a clear and obvious error. Obviously, away from the upper echelons, the officials can only react to what they have seen and interpret this according to The Laws of the Game which are not always known to fans, such as when the new offside law was first made and a free kick given in the offender's own half because that was where he had controlled the ball after coming back from the opponents' half. I was on the Turf the first time this happened and the derision given to the officials was ridiculous and it has happened a few times since and it is only recently that fans have accepted this.
Making around about 245 decisions per game needs high levels of concentration and there will always be the odd mistake, just to give us fans a talking point!

Some unfair scores on this thread. I thought he was largely ok for a first Premier League game. He did have a poor 10-15 minutes in the second half, which encompassed his failure to send off Carroll, when he lost a bit of control. I’d be a lot happier to see him back at the Turf than some of the more experienced refs we’ve had this season.

I think the bloke will learn from that. He'll have seen the Carroll incident replayed and realised he erred, no pun intended, on the side of caution and from then on found his authority seriously undermined by the wily, more experienced players.
No damage done,luckily.

In the case of the likes of Mike Dean, Moss and many others all “experience” means is that they have been making big mistakes for a lot longer.

We need new referees in this league and we don’t need managers like Mrs Doubtfire trying to bully and influence them in the way Fergie did which was a disgrace and an unfair advantage which was allowed in the game for more than a decade.
Bruce should be facing an FA charge for his comments. How can the idiot not apologise after seeing the replays of both incidents ?
