I used to get some of that the last few years I worked (when I was 58-61). I used to get up 05.30 and leave home 06.30; in work all day then coming home in the dark. That lack of daylight definitely gets to you when you're older. I started taking the vitamin D in Dec-Feb which may've helped but retiring and laying in bed for longer and getting out into the fresh air when the day was lighter 100% cured it.

I'm not as affected as much as i used to be,but i only work afternoons now.

Took me ages to get out of bed this morning on my day off,and i was lethargic, despite getting a full night's sleep. :?

I'd advise people to get out in the daylight for an hour or so if possible,i know there's not much daylight at this time of year, but it does help, even if it's cold.

Yes, i have suffered this for several years now (and not only in December, but all through the winter months).

I use a Lumie lamp, which I have had for many year. It sits upstairs in the room I use as an office. I would certainly recommend this to anyone. You can vary how bright you want it. My wife has a Lumie 'screen' which sits on her desk at work, but I find this rather too bright on what it describes as a 'generous screen'. Both these are said to improve mood, energy and focus'. All I can say is that they work well for me.

Suffered from it for years I think but I just learned to deal with it. I don't like winter time at all. People laugh when I say I couldn't care less if I never saw another snowflake. Been wanting to move to Spain for years but my wife is still dragging her feet. Give me warmth and sunshine every day.

Every year without fail. I’m quite a bubbly person and I don’t think anyone would notice me being a bit down as I just get on with it and don’t let it affect my day to day activities.

I always try and get some holidays booked before summer starts and when it ends though to try and prolong the summertime for me. Keeping myself busy and forcing myself to get out in a bit of light all year round definitely helps but the minute I can just sit down, I cba getting up and doing anything - think it’s worse when it affects seeing mates etc ... the mates love spending time with and having a catch up with, I just really cannot be bothered to go and see when the night starts are longer.

Start your day with a 30 minute walk Walk as fast as you can. Take a shower and then have breakfast. Then you will be ready to face the world. Don’t make excuses to miss any day. No more SAD if you do this. I walk 3 miles first thin every morning. Takes 45 mins and I feel great.

My outdoor life is very important to me. As the days lengthen I spend more and more time outdoors, with the kids, the wife, the dog, and on my own. As the days shorten I will find that I don’t go out as much, but always get out at least once for at least half an hour with the dog. It certainly beats those winter blues.

I think the fact I work from home is one of the reasons. Some days I'll be up at the crack of lunch and before I know it, it's dark again.

Thankfully I don’t seem to suffer but one of my friends does.
Sadly my attitude used to be the same as some on this thread, it’s just a fad, just get on with life etc etc.

Thankfully I did a bit more research into how common it is

I don’t know how to tell what is Depression and what SAD.

It’s not the cold, it’s the lack of light that makes things more difficult in Winter.

My fight (whatever it’s type) has been for over 10 years. The days spent thinking how I should end my life are thankfully behind me. I came very close. It was very black.

But I struggle to focus on work and my income has crashed as a result.

Having said that, I feel ok.

To people who have never suffered, please don’t knock or trivialise those who have. Just hope you never experience it. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

What is depression like? I describe it as the thickest, blackest fog but it’s in your head. It’s sucks the joy and desire to live out of you.

One of the things I do, is walk an hour a day or garden. Get out into the natural light. I also bought a dog....that meant I had to walk even on the worse days. I suspect I owe my life to having a dog....it was the start of the picking myself up process.

Definitely prefer summer. But just have to embrace the winter. Tbh nothing nicer than blue skies in december. And dont mind it dark in a morning when driving. Wake up gradually

Just try and get out as much as I can. Especially when working.

It's perfectly natural to feel more down in the winter when it's cold, dark and miserable. I work outside so I at least get to see a bit of daylight. Would hate to be in an office where you're driving to work in the dark and then driving home in the dark as well.

Well, I've been taking your advice and done this for last few mornings - it definitely works!
I'm not walking as fast as I can, but still doing 3.25 miles in around 55 minutes.

If anybody has an hour spare in the mornings, I'd certainly recommend it. The challenge now is to do it at least 6 days a week.

I felt it a little in an office I used to work in with no windows. Getting out at lunch helped. Now I'm in a place I can see outside I find I'm fine. I don't mind winter. Tend to get more overtime in as it's dark when I leave anyway, use that cash to have a great summer.

I came to the conclusion I get it years ago. It is the only thing that explains why I hate winter so much. I have been trying to get my wife to agree to a move to Spain but she has been dragging her feet at the idea. Winter in England is so bloody miserable, especially when people decide they have to drive at 10 miles per hour when there is a millimetre of snow on the road. Cold, wet, just absolutely miserable. I couldn't care less if I never saw another bloody snowflake in my life. And now we are in the worst bit, nothing to look forward to until Easter only dark, cold, rain, snow and the bloody trasnsfer window in which we know for certain nothing of note will happen for us. Wake me up late March. :( :( :(

Ok, I’ll try.

First of all allow me to say I know someone who has trouble with depression, sometimes he’s down, and sometimes he’s damn near suicidal. It’s a terrible thing when it gets hold of him I have to say... doesnt matter what people say to him either, he just can’t see the good in anything. That’s sad. Feel for him I really do.

SAD? Just seems to me like yet ANOTHER tag applied to something that could be just as easily be explained in other ways.
Depressed because it’s cold?
Depressed because it’s dark when I get up?
Depressed because it’s dark when I go home?
Depressed because it’s winter?
Depressed because it’s summer?
I don’t get it, I truly don’t.

Depressed because a close family member has died?
Depressed because I have lost my job and I can’t feed my family and pay the mortgage?
Depressed because my business has collapsed?
Depressed because I spent years in the armed forces and I’m struggling to deal with my experiences?
THAT I get...

There’s plenty of things that I don’t get, so I don’t bother commenting on them. I hope you don’t mind if I use the NHS instead of you as a point of reference in this case.

This kind of ignorance is why we are seeing all these mental health awareness campaigns.
