Anyone remember this game
Some decent players played in this including one or two who made it. Phil Neville being one.
Remember thinking it was huge we had this game Around the same time we hosted England under 21s when they played Latvia. Ian Pearce got booed throughout
Round the time we played Ajax too.

I don't remember that game but I do remember the Ajax game that is referred to.
First time I had seen a fluorescent football kit. I think it was a young Edwin van der Sar in pink !!

" Airtours " and " Tradewinds " became part of " Going Places " Travel, which were eventually absorbed into the Clusterf**k that became Thomas Cook PLC ...
The original " Airtours " Travel shop in Burnley, was on Chancery Walk, later " Going Places " and thereafter " Co-Op Travel " . At one point, Thomas Cook PLC owned 3 shops in Burnley town centre, all situated within an area half the size of a football pitch, all competing against each other, other Travel Agents and latterly, the internet. Whilst the Chancery Walk shop was always profitable, it suffered from having appalling management, especially towards the end ..

The two crests look strange i must say , one looks like Burnley the other not sure at all .
Re: Anyone remember this game
Airtours started out as pendle travel in Nelson, run by David Crossland. At the height of his fame many suggested he got involved in the football club, but he never had any desire to invest.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2019 10:57 pm" Airtours " and " Tradewinds " became part of " Going Places " Travel, which were eventually absorbed into the Clusterf**k that became Thomas Cook PLC ...

When Thomas Cook went bust it was quoted their problems stemed from buying going places, the final resting place for pendle travel/Airtours.

I believe that was the game where a high clearance got stuck behind the sign at the front of the Longside. The most tragic of accidents occured a couple of days later when young apprentice, Ben Lee, tried to retrieve the ball.

And that extremely tragic event caused the postponement of our away fixture at York that same evening which was then rescheduled at the end of the season and became the "one night in York" promotion game.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 2:37 pmI believe that was the game where a high clearance got stuck behind the sign at the front of the Longside. Re Crossland who got very rich out of Airtours. BFC were absolutely skint and desperate around that time and anyone remotely local with any money was touted as a potential saviour, but I believe Crossland publicly stated he had no interest in football whatsoever.

I was sat virtually next to ex Claret Ron Futcher at that schoolboy international. He was watching his nephew Daniel Murphy playing for England. That’s the same Daniel Murphy who is now a pundit on MOTD.

Any chance of seeing the teams sheet, CFC?cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2019 10:14 pmWe sat in there too. Don't remember the game itself.
Re: Anyone remember this game
Went to school with David Crosland. Sadly he had no interest in sport of any kind. When he sold out for big bucks I advised him to buy Man United. He could not understand why and had no interest. Told me a few years later that it was his biggest mistake in business. At the time some weird guy from the Lake District whose name escapes me nearly bought Man U for peanuts !!!

I used to work for Airtours in Mallorca. They bought out Carousel Holidays which was where Doug Ellis made his money. I met him out there once when he brought Villa over. I asked him how long he’s worked for Villa. He put me straight !

Stephen Hughes go on to play for Arsenal?
Neville obviously played at top level.
Not sure on any of the others.

Re: Anyone remember this game
he did. Danny Murphy is the Danny Murphy who played for Liverpool. Phil Neville obviously. I think Graeme Power had a decent career and played us a few times.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 9:37 pmStephen Hughes go on to play for Arsenal?
