Signing star players from our cup opposition

Post by Woodleyclaret » Sat Dec 21, 2019 10:16 pm

Best ever example , Wade Elliot after he had starred for Bournemouth in their FA cup tie at the Turf
I beleve a certain Eddie Howe may have also featured.

Think Frank Casper was signed after a meeting with Rotherham. He turned out OK.

Haven't we already been linked with one of Peterborough's strikers? Could be one to keep an eye on

Not a cup competition, but I am sure we must have signed Besart Berisha after his performance at the Turf for Albania.

Didn’t we sign Drissa Diallo after playing a pre-season friendly vs (Chesterfield ???).
He kept Tripps on the bench for a few games during that season!!

More that Cotterill had managed him previously than a cup-tie, I think.

The reverse should of happened for Ian Moore.

We signed him for a million quid a couple of days after watching him do nothing for Stockport against us.

Graham Di Branchio outshone him playing upfront for us in a 2-0 win.

Weren’t we meant to be signing Sefki Kuqi and ended up with Moore?

Tendayi Darikwa yes that’s the one - tricky name to remember. Thanks for the heads-up.

Maybe Cotterill makes the list as a manager. Knocked us out of the cup at Cheltenham in 2002.

We were certainly linked but Stan opted for Moore as Norwich were very close to getting him.

Spicer, O'Connor and Elliott were signed from Bournemouth a few months after we'd beaten them in the cup. Noble and Casper have been mentioned but both of those were years after the cup games.

The only two I'm aware of that we signed after playing well against us in cup games are Doug Collins (Grimsby) and Kevin Glendon (Hyde).

Not quite, we were very close to signing Kuqi but dropped it when Blake became available. Moore had signed for us in the previous season.

Funny old game. We fail to win promotion and Robbie Blake becomes a modern day legend, yet we'd have probably won promotion had we signed Kuqi instead.

You are so right. We needed a player to come in at that time and give us that needed push but we got a player virtually unable to play due to injury. Kuqi went to Sheffield Wednesday and immediately came to the Turf and scored the winning goal against us.

Ultimately though, the Blake signing was worth it.

1914 Cup Final goalkeeper Ronnie Sewell was signed from Gainsborough Trinity after defeating them 4-1 in the cup the previous year!
