Sheff Utd away record

Post by Quickenthetempo » Sun Dec 22, 2019 11:24 pm

Remaining unbeaten in their first 9 away games is a record for a promoted side in the top division.

Going back as far as 1947 when it was the mighty clarets doing it.

It's great and all that, but I guarantee that they're in for a shock for the next 9 away games.

Multiple changes of opinion/excuses usually means they were wrong and don't want to admit it.

Very rare for posters on this site to give any credit to players, fans, managers , or style of any other team in our winnable bracket doing things different to us.
Not sure whether its through envy, jealousy or panic that it could be detrimental to our stay in the league.

If they handed out the manager of the season tomorrow, Wilder you'd think would win it.

Premier league seasons usually have 1 big surprise a season, this season it seems it's Sheff Utd.

This is our first season after promotion in 1947. Five wins and five draws in first ten and then defeat at Preston on Boxing Day.

Completely, lots of posters on here unable to give any other team a bit of credit or acknowledgement for some reason. It's like they think all the smaller clubs have to play our way or they're doing it wrong. For what it's worth I think they'll finish top half. It's not like they've had a lot if luck either, they've been winning games well. Could have easily been 3 nil down at Brighton on Saturday.

Amazing record to be fair......someone will be along shortly to proclaim Wilder as better than Dyche and the second coming of Brian Clough

Absolutely. Credit where its due theyve been a breath of fresh air. And brilliant home and away. Look at them at spurs vs our effort.

Obviously great that both of us look to be on the road to safety.

I think most of us are amazed at how well they’ve done but just when you think they might drop after a bad result they just bounce back.

I remember when Wilder had just got them back into the Championship and there was speculation that Dyche might be leaving. Wilder was the one I’d have wanted us to try and bring in. What a superb job he’s done there. I don’t think they will finish as high as they are now but they are guaranteed to finish higher than many expected.

In the league, yes. Only played them seven or eight times since but I think we’ve only had one point.

Great to see another team from up north doing the business in the premier league.

The more unfashionable, hard working, relatively poor clubs up there the better for me.

I think they're safe now, itd take a monumental collapse from here to be anywhere near the bottom 3 com May.

Similarly I think 4 points for us in the next 3, with 3 coming v Villa and I think we are home and hosed too.

Wilder was speaking in the press about needed 2 or 3 extra bodies in, not sure if that's him thinking strike whilst they are probably at their most attractive, or he genuinely thinks he's working a miracle with what he's got so far.

It certainly wont get much better for them, and they look more appealing to any incoming player as they should be safe for another season minimum.
But it will cost them a pretty penny to bring in 3 youd imagine.

Having a great season and fair play to them as i thought they might struggle and i agree i would have Wilder here in a heartbeat - they play cracking football and great to see their wing backs and centre halfs attacking

I know quite a few Blades, they inhabit our Sheffield office where I have to visit occasionally. They are a nice bunch and have no pretentions to 'greatness' and are as pleasantly surprised about their situation as we are. I have always liked Sheff United, don't know why but it's just one of those things. Be nice if they could do a 'Burnley' and finish 'best of the rest'. Having said that I think even United and Arsenal might not even finish that high the way things are going. The banter in that office is excellent between the Blades and Owls, I swear they hate each other more than us and Rovers. Unlike most cities with two clubs you don't CHOOSE who you support in Sheffield, it depends on which half of the city you are born in and who your family supports. Bonkers.

Wilder was manager at Halifax for a while when my old man was there. Came to the house a few times when he was poorly.

Genuinely nice bloke, really pleased to see him doing so well.

It would take a collapse similar to Hull in 2008/09 who nearly went down after a superb start. They had 27 points from 17 games, collapsed and just stayed up with 35. That's not going to happen at Sheffield United.

Good luck to them , I'm just glad they didn't turn up at Wembley . Hopefully they're joined by Wednesday next season.

Wow that is a collapse and a half, was that the season Phil Brown did an on the field HT team talk?

As you say I think Sheff Utd won't and Wilder in particular wouldn't let that happen.
They seem quite capable of keeping clean sheets and look relatively solid

Not sure if they've had any big injuries yet, and what their squad depth is like.

Was that season, unbelievable start and then the wheels well and truly came off. That on field team talk was in game 19.

20 points from 9 games
27 points from 17 games
35 points from 38 games

Stayed up by one point

Some big crowds there!! But how bizarre to play Preston home and Preston away on consecutive days! Both with massive gates too. I remember similar happening around Easter in the 60's and 70's but there was usually at least a day off between the games and they weren't both against the same opposition.

A bit skewed because of called off matches, but Blackpool had 25 points after their 18th game (the rest had played between 19 and 21)and still went down.

Probably a bit of both. Huge opportunity for them to push on. But what he is getting out of the likes of norwood, fleck and mcburnie in particular is brilliant. And then likes of McGoldrick, the job hes done is unreal.

Two amazing seasons in our history immediately after the end of WW2. 1946/47 we were unlucky beaten finalists in the FA Cup at Wembley, but gained compensation by winning promotion from Division Two. Then a fantastic first season back in Division One in 1947/48 finishing 3rd after that remarkable record of being unbeaten in our first ten away games.

Harry Potts was a key figure in both those seasons, but not as manager, this time as a player on the pitch.
