The FA Cup. One game at a time.
This year, this season, we need to be more positive and with that, treat the FA Cup with some increased respect. We are good enough not to be paralysed by the fear of relegation.
Let’s just go with the mantra of, ‘one game at a time’. Let’s not differentiate between League and Cup for the remainder of this season. Just play the best possible eleven for each game, just making changes for form and injuries.
The rest as they say, will take care of itself. This will lend itself to some rotational changes, keeping a greater number of squad members happy, knowing that they are more likely to be given an opportunity.
We have to get away from the failed tradition of making wholesale changes for a Cup game, we need the continuity of ‘just another game’, ‘one game at a time’.
Just a couple of changes will greatly improve the chances of those changes being a success.

Laudable sentiments but four days after we play Villa we can expect a full reserve starting line up. I expect Peterborough to do the same as they are chasing automatic promotion. These cup games are becoming an absolute farce.

I don’t imagine SD has ever sent a team out to lose. He has made changes and been let down.
Possibly the pre-match attitude at Gawthorpe has sent the wrong message out to the players. No doubt he will rotate for P’boro.
Whether they win is another matter but if not they need canning.

But when Dyche who clearly hates making changes normally then goes and makes 9 or 10 for our cup games it clearly sends out a message to the players that he isn't too bothered.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 2:12 pmI don’t imagine SD has ever sent a team out to lose. I agree with that but they are still professionals and it is their opportunity to show him what they can do.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
I apologise in advance. When I saw that tired old mantra in the heading I thought 'oh no here we go again, another Dyche cliche'. However your post is much better than the heading and I agree with everything you say. Of course you are likely to get a whole army of people saying 'we can't do that, think of the PL.' And no matter how well you argue the case many will still say that you are wrong because it goes against the whole ethos of 'PL first and safety at all costs'.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 1:02 pmThis year, this season, we need to be more positive and with that, treat the FA Cup with some increased respect. I don't think anyone thinks he sends teams out to lose but the way he picks his teams for cups he might as well do.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 2:12 pmI don’t imagine SD has ever sent a team out to lose. He has made changes and been let down.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
That would be a good argument if we had 22 'good' players. Unfortunately we come up a tad short on that front. Stevenage are professionals but they are bottom of league two.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 2:22 pmI agree with that but they are still professionals and it is their opportunity to show him what they can do.
Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
I thinks it’s hilarious tbh. Brings in the bench players who cost millions, get beat by teams who are nobodies then complains he isn’t given more money to spend.
Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
Another factor is that a lot of our fringe players have barely played for 12 months. Is it any wonder we get a bitty, disjointed performance?

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
Our second 11 should easily be good enough to beat Peterbrough at home who probably qont be taking it serious themselves.
Id take an FA cup win over any achievement we have had in the last 30 years. In fact since we won the league.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
Can't wait for Brighton v Leeds on telly next season. Will there be a telly left in one piece in Burnley? It's like: who do you want to win and 80% on here all shouting NO-ONE - ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE. AARGH!!! The brain then melts and after the TV is gone there is nothing left to smash. Can't wait.
Houseboy is now hated by all and sundry on the Bee Hole End Forum. Cue fatwa for blasphemy.
Merry Christmas all and a happy.....hey put down that heavy blunt instrument.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
But we shouldn’t be playing our second eleven should we?
We have clear evidence that this strategy does not work.
If Sean says he always picks a team to win every game, why does he make so many changes for specific games, which funnily enough always seem to be Cup games.
Maybe it is just coincidence, but as he then makes another load of changes for the following game (league match) maybe not.
I still want him to leave out injury doubts, (natural rotation) but the starting eleven should be the strongest possible, fitness allowing and if he wants, fill the bench with promising under 23’s.
I am and always will be a ‘happy clapper’ but I don’t want to watch a reserve team in a first team competition, despite the price drop.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
If we have a decent Xmas,by the time of the Peterborough tie,we could be around the 30 point mark,in which case there is no excuse for not playing our strongest XI,these cup defeats are becoming an embarrassment now.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 9:13 pmBut we shouldn’t be playing our second eleven should we?

There's no guarantee of who we'll draw in round 4,should we get there, but let's just get there and worry about the draw afterwards.

This thread should be re titled. "The F.A. Cup. One game a season". (Anyway I'm going to it, seeing as I'll have to wait a year for the next one!! )

Not sure where all this pessimism comes from. When was the last time we lost at home in the third round?

Last few FA Cup games
Man City away lost
Man City away lost
Sunderland away & home drew won
Bristol city home won
Lincoln home lost
Middlesbrough home won
Arsenal away lost.
8 games in 4 seasons only one surprise result.

Beaten by Spurs, Arsenal & Man City twice in the last five years. We had one horrible day in 2017 but there is otherwise no evidence of a lack of respect.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 1:02 pmThis year, this season, we need to be more positive and with that, treat the FA Cup with some increased respect.

A good League One team will always be a match for any reserve Prem team outside the Big 6. We've been there and done it ourselves in the past.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 4:15 pmOur second 11 should easily be good enough to beat Peterbrough at home who probably wont be taking it serious themselves.

Re: The FA Cup. One game at a time.
No, it’s not the losing that bothers me, it’s football, any team can beat any team on any given day. That is the beauty of knockout football. We have seen that making 8 or more changes simply has not worked very well, so let’s, just for once, see how treating it as just another game works out. If there are a couple of players that need resting against Villa do that. I don’t want tired underperforming players having to play, that’s why we have a squad. Not just to play an entirely different 11 in any cup game. If we play our best 11 on the day and ‘Posh’ beat us that’s ok, but at least we gave ourselves the best possible chance. If I was resting players I would just tell Tarks and Mee to have the weekend off.
