Believe it or not, this ground was home to the first team to beat Real Madrid in Spain.

I can just about remember it being there but I never saw a football match at Seedhill. I did once go to the stock cars there though.

The Peel Park pic btw was taken about five or six years ago. We went in the Peel Park pub before a pre-season friendly against Stanley.

In preparation for the new season in the Second Division Nelson went on a pre-season tour to Spain in the summer of 1923, winning two of their games, beating Real Oviedo 2–1 and Real Madrid 4–2 making them the first English team to beat Real Madrid in Spain...

Happy memories of going to Nelson for the stock cars in the 70's especially after a Burnley win at the Turf.
I remember Stu Smith from Rochdale, Frankie Wainman, Sam Ostle and many more whose names escape me.

Is that Carr Road behind the stand? The football ground was long gone before I started going to cricket at Seedhill and I can barely remember what it was like before the motorway was built so difficult to picture how it looked.
My dad used to tell us about watching cricket when the stock cars and speedway was on; sounds terrible, it was always crap playing while the fair was on.

Nelson was one of my favourite grounds before the motorway was built. I’d be sat in the scoreboard looking across to the pavilion above the terraced seating, and the football stand to the right. Super ground. Lost all its charm.

I think it is a Hillman Avenger ... my first car was a 1978 Chrysler Avenger !
Apparently, the last Nelson FC game was played there in March 1971, but the stand in the photo looks to be in some disrepair. I suspect the photo was taken shortly before it's demolition around 1980, to make way for the M65 .... as ever, I stand to be corrected !

I saw many a game at Seedhill. Also of course the stock cars and speedway. What a great place Nelson was to grow up.

Followed stockcar racing as well as the Clarets all over the country in those days. Great times.

Hillman Avenger turning left to go up Carr Road. And if the photo was pre 1976 it would have passed the Nelson Imp. A venue that hosted an unbelievable array of world famous music acts for a Lancashire mill town, including The Beatles, The Who, Hendrix(not Jeff!) and scores of others.

I saw a lot of football at Seedhill and then, of course, the Admirals and stock-cars and, for the last two, used to stand on the corner pictured in Rammy's photo above and used to get absolutely covered in cinder dust. Me and a couple of mates would end up going back home up Carr Road after calling in at the Conservative Club. Two reasons ; the old bloke manning the desk at the entrance was oh, so easy to convince we were old enough to get in - and once you'd got your ticket, you'd cracked it.
The other was that Pendle School of Dancing used to meet in the upstairs room and a couple of the girls who went became of interest.
Two of us did rather well but not on the dancefloor. Whether we rated as a ten or a sev-ern, I'm not sure but great times anyway.
I think I read in a shortish booklet on the history of the Admirals that one of the walls from the original Seedhill was retained in the new cricket ground and still bears the very faded "HOME - PADDOCK".
I've never been to the new ground but saw many great games at the old one. One of my mates was Sam Pickles whose dad was Roy Pickles, a Nelson cricketing legend.
I used to spend a fair bit of time at his house, again great times but made even greater when Neil Hawke and his fabulous-looking wife often dropped by. I have never seen a shorter skirt nor better legs since.
Hers weren't bad either.

I lived in brierfield when i was younger ( father had the shoe shop ) , and a few of us used to walk over bent head , hard plats , down lomeshaye , over the bridge past the imp to support willie Harrison number 2 . Trouble is stu smith 391 used to win nearly all the time !

He was a nice bloke, Neil, a hell of a shame to lose him so early, he went on Christmas Day, 2000 and was, apparently, part of a study to see how long a human could survive off just being drip-fed. Two years he lasted.
I assume he and Elsa split up before he returned to Oz, she did have that boutique in Scotland Road. Him being your betting partner a few doors down makes sense. Us lads used to walk past it half a dozen times before we finally plucked up courage to go in and say hello. She was stunning, though.
Interesting you knew Sam well, convo, we all kind of lost touch after dispersing to colleges and unis all over the country. Sam Pig (a character in children' book we saw in Nelson Library, the name stuck) stayed in Nelson.
The last time I saw him, quite a few years back, he was driving his lorry along the back road near Fence. Naturally, my car and his lorry met on one of the road's tightest corners so I'm edging back grumbling, cursing and, suddeny, "Woah, it's Sam Pig !"
Cue one stunned missus and two former Edge-Enders having a quick natter. He seemed OK then and I hope he is now.

The stock cars ruined the corners of the pitch, so bits of false grass (like grocers used to display their fruit) were just put down during matches. Bizarre stuff but true.
