Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
Former red rose star Clive Hubert Lloyd has been knighted in the 2020 New Year's Honours. I think so many of us used to go to Old Trafford for one day games wanting us to lose two quick wickets so we could see him bat. Fantastic cricketer and a brilliant captain of the West Indies.
Other honours in cricket
Trevor Bayliss OBE
Ben Stokes OBE
Joe Root MBE
Jos Buttler MBE
Eoin Morgan CBE

it's taken the big man so long to finally become a knight of the realm, but it's well deserved for him.

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
I was shocked at this award.
I thought he was knighted years ago.
Congrats to the great man. My favourite cricketer ever.

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
Remember, as a young lad, carrying his bags up from the car park to the pavilion two days running, in Buxton. (Derby's v Lancs)
They were heavy and it wasn't easy keeping up with him!
Spent a few unsuccessful hours trying to find more than one ball he hit out of the ground!
One of my really big, all-time, sporting Hero's.
Arise, Sir Clive.

Loved to watch him field. In an era when fielding was seemingly optional, he was an exception. Great bat, great captain too.

Must be honest, I thought he was already knighted. Great cricketer and ambassador for the game. Richly deserved, congratulations Sir Clive.

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
He looked the most unlikely of sportsmen but he was very much a forerunner as a fielder along with Colin Bland from South Africa. He was a decent bowler too but to be able to watch him bat was something else.thatdberight wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 12:42 amLoved to watch him field. Brilliant cricketer and still involved at Lancs.

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
At the age of 12 I saw a county League match at old Trafford... I vividly remember Clive Lloyd chasing the ball to the boundary, right in front of where I was sitting. In one action he picked the ball up from just inside the boundary rope, turned and through it straight into the gloves Farooq Engineer..... I realised immediately that the world's best sportsmen do things we can't.

Never saw him at Old Trafford but watched him a lot playing for Haslingden, my local team. He was a great crowd puller and we were so lucky,in those days, to be able to see great sportsmen for, relatively, next to nothing.

First time I saw Clive Lloyd play live was in that famous Gillette Cup game at old Trafford v Gloucestershire 1971.

He’s been “ Sir” Clive ever since I first saw him play for Lancs and a remarkable innings for the great WI World Cup side of 75 with Rohan Khani ( spell)

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
Silly fact for those who wouldn’t know. Lance Gibbs, the great West Indian spinner, was his uncle as he didn't have much use for the bats that were in his contract he passed them on to Clive.
Far more than a great batter. The best cover point ever, caught everything and could turn his arm over. Sad that injury forced him into the slips whilst still relatively young.

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
As alluded to already, one of Haslingden's finest. One of our own. Can see him now dispatching ball after ball over ' the auction end'. A giant of a cricketer.
Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
At bloody last. Explosive batsman who thrilled crowds the world over, peerless cover point fielder (with the he sole exception of Colin Bland) and captain of the greatest cricket team ever. He melded a very disparate group of players into an incredible team for the West Indies. Who could ever forget that dynamic century against Lillee and Thompson in the first world cup final? Oh and, of course, he represented our beloved county with great distinction. Arise, Sir Clive!

Re: Sir Clive Hubert Lloyd
I once saw him playing for Haslingden at Burnley and he hit three shots in one over onto the football pitch. Having said that there was no stand there at the time and they did go straight through.
In 1967, his first season at Haslingden, he played for the International Cavaliers against the Indians at Southport. He and Sobers put on a partnership with both getting into the 80s. Lloyd out batted Sobers which took some doing when Sobers scored 80 plus.
The last time I saw him in the flesh was at a dinner at Burnley Football Club. What I remember was him picking up a Burnley FC director who was p*ssed and carried him out.

Funny I watched the 50 years of QofS last night. Clive was only on for a second but got all the memories flooding back. A real gentleman world beating cricketer and Lancashire stalwart.
Really pleased for him, long overdue; I must admit I almost googled to check he was still alive as I haven’t heard of him in twenty years.
