I like Graeme Souness'

Post by Bullabill » Mon Dec 30, 2019 7:12 am

suggestion for VAR adjudication of offside.

Instead of
" If any part of the attacker is offside, then the decision is offside"

It should be
"If any part of the attacker is onside, then the decision is onside"

It would certainly return the 'advantage of doubt' which formerly existed to the attacker, and would result in more goals.

It will still have the same levels of error and therefore be subject to the same farce we have now. The one change I would make is to state that when the margin is so fine that you need a VAR line that is about 12 inches in relative width, and any off side within that line is not offside, and even then the on field ref should make the judgement

But they are not error now!!!! I take your point, but I would suggest that Souness' suggestion would be perceived as better by most fans. There will however be a contrary few!!

Just how thick are these lines they're drawing?

Exactly how big is a pixel, for example?

How long is a piece of string.

They should make the virtual "line" a decent thickness (fnarr fnarr) of say about one foot, half a foot. If it overlaps with the defending player in any way then they are adjudged to be offside. You'd essentially be allowing half a foot of leeway into these decisions, with the benefit of the doubt going to the attacking team.

Anything but this stupid "offside by millimetres" nonsense which we're currently enduring.

Just use feet. It's not rocket science.

Why not revert to the former offside rule
When you recieve the ball with bo member of tge opposition in front of you ypu are deemed to be on an offside position and the opposition are awarded a free kick
The var machines should bw scrapped refs biased toward so called bigger teams.is one thing
To have failes ref Riley in charge of var is an horrendous idea

It just needs scrapping for offside full stop. You can't be a little bit off Side, you either are or you're not. Same as the whole ball is either over the line or it's not for a goal. Here's a revolutionary idea, just scrap offside totally

As someone pointed out on here a short while ago, the offside law was originally brought in to prevent "goal hanging" and was never intended to be used to wipe out goals like the Wolves goal yesterday. The whole thing has become stupid and is turning genuine fans off.

If it’s taking 2/3 minutes to decide if a players big toe is offside, and only then by zooming into the picture x1000 then it can’t be clear & obvious

I have been citing 'daylight' as the recipe for offside, since the first nose hair caused offside disallowed goal, so happily agree. If 'level', to the naked eye, was deemed onside, to achieve more goals, then daylight is the natural 'millimetre alternative.

Chris Wood would be the most prolific striker the Premier league has ever seen. :D

I really don’t like Souness and he’s not always been complimentary about Burnley or Dyche.

We have a few who are the same on here, on the latter and the former over the last couple of seasons

Souness is fairly even, he's said good things about us also.

The Souness idea sounds good but it still comes down to them silly red and blue lines and mm of gap. The only difference being the attacker would have an extra couple of feet to play with. They can’t even be accurate to when the ball has been played.
We had a VAR ont’Turf earlier this season where the ball had clearly left the passers boot.

If you can’t decide by eye sight onside would be my best solution.

Until they make it clear day light between striker and defender then this will always be a silly debate.

No need to change the laws. And Souness' "fantastic" idea simply shifts the point at which the measurement and therefore fiasco takes place.

What about, "VAR. We've given a decision. You've got 15 seconds. If you're certain and you've got the balls, let me know inside 15 seconds to overturn it."

I think this offside because his armpit was in front of the last defender or onside because the defender has a big arse is absolute nonesence. I would have offsides judged solely on the positions of their feet, no.thing else. That said I would get rid of VAR completely, I hate it. Seems to me we’re talking about it far more than we ever did about referees or their assistants mistakes.

simple fix for offsides - take the ability to draw lines away, if you can't tell after two replays then it's not clear and obvious so it's onside.

That is the most sensible suggestion I have heard, that way it is back to a human to make a judgement call based upon what they can actually see

No changing of the law will stop the need to draw lines and look at mms. There's nothing wrong with the rule, need to change the VAR approach.

I think the way it is used in the US, is that if it isn't a clear and obvious error after first view, then leave it to the on field decision.
