Car Park: Towneley High School
After the Man Utd match I arrived at this car park at 9.50 ish.
Only to find mine and a few hundred other cars had been trapped in, by the barrier being shut.
I followed the other cars driving over grass verges and footpaths getting out a different way.
This route was kindly being highlighted by the council vehicle that had probably closed the barrier.
I thought this car park was open until 10pm?
I was out and on the road by 9.59pm.
Anyone else on here with the same problem?

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
Yes, I had the same problem. I got there about 10 and there was still about 40 cars still stuck in the car park.
Some were churning up the mud stuck trying to drive over the pavement and around the bollards.
What utter madness. Why would the council close the barrier knowing that everyone that parked there had gone to the match.

Was the vehicle still there with orange flashing lights on his cab roof?
Thinking about it, I hope he wasn't taking our registration numbers and we get a bill for the damage!
Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
Yes, there was no other choice. Mine car is rear wheel drive car, so I had to wait for almost everyone else to go before I could get a run at it. If I had stopped, I would have got stuck.
No, the vehicle with the lights had gone by then. Everyone was left to themselves to work out how to get out.

Is it a car park you pay for?

Because if its a properly run car park they shouldn't close it up, if it was people nipping on private land without permission it would be different.
Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
Yep. £1.50 per visit, which is around 2 hours for a match, so not cheap.

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
But it’s not £1.50 for 2 hours - it’s £1.50 for the full day (8am-10pm)
On a Saturday you could go at 8am, pay £1.50 for a ticket, do the ParkRun, leave, come back at 2pm, park, go to the game, go home and then come back at 8pm to walk the dog around all on the same ticket
Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
True. But this was a Saturday night and I never park there more than a few hours. I’m not sure what cost has to do with stupidity anyway.wilks_bfc wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2020 11:30 amBut it’s not £1.50 for 2 hours - it’s £1.50 for the full day (8am-10pm)

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
I wasn't there last Saturday but looking at an old ticket that I had in my car it says "Departure Time 10:00pm.".
There was a similar incident at a car park in Newham a few years ago. The police were called and the council were eventually made to open the gates - but, according to the Evening Standard, only after one of the motorists attempted to break the lock.
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/ ... 92674.html
Questions
Were the gates locked before 10p.m.? If so, why?
Did the parking ticket say that the parking fee covered parking up to 10p.m?
Did the officials who locked the gate act on instructions from their employer or was it on their on their own initiative?
Was it the people in the council van that locked the gate? If so, why didn't they re-open it when they saw cars trying to escape by driving over grass verges and footpaths? Did they not consider the damage that they were causing to the grass verges? Also did they not consider the possibility of accidents and damage to vehicles.
What would have happened if the vehicles had not tried to exit the car park by other routes? A large number of people would have been trapped. Some would have been children. Others would have been people who needed to get back to their families.
If they didn't want vehicles to be parked there at all for some reason, why didn't they close the gates before the match?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the officials who decided to close the gate. God bless you.

Yep.
I checked yesterday and it is definitely 10 pm.
In the daylight you can clearly see the damage we have caused to the grass verges.
I suspect this Council worker is a Blackburn fan.
He must have been sat there in his vehicle having a right little chuckle to himself.
Sad b*s*ard jobsworth.

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
When a parking ticket is purchased the purchaser enters into a contract with the owner of the car park. As far as I know it is implicit within the contract that the car park owner will not lock the gates of the car park before the end of the period for which the ticket was purchased. It might be the case that compensation is due - especially if damage was done to a vehicle or person when alternative routes had to be taken to release the vehicles from the car park.
If the car park is owned by the council then it might be worth contacting the council to complain and to request a 'refund of the ticket price' plus 'the cost of a car wash'. An initial complaint can be made through the following contact:
https://www.resolver.co.uk/companies/bu ... ct-details
Council member contact details can be found here:
https://burnley.moderngov.co.uk/mgMembe ... aspx?bcr=1
There is also the issue of 'keeping public order around football grounds at match time'. All civil authorities should take responsibility for this. By locking the cars of two or three hundred football fans in a car park, a potential 'flashpoint' was created. The council should be investigating this as a matter of urgency to ensure that it does not happen again.
Perhaps, in future, a quick visit to the car park by the police could be made to ensure that the gates are open.
I am sure that the Labour Council will look into this. If not, there is always the next council elections to register our displeasure.

A minor point and not relevant to the issue, Burnley Council is not Labour controlled.UnderSeige wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 11:32 am

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
A local beauty spot near us (free parking) locks the gates at 5pm at this time of year because of suspected drug use (and dogging?) to stop people getting in but at the side of the gate are those things called (I think) dragon's teeth so that you can drive out at any time you like. Would this not be a sensible solution to this problem?

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
I have been onto the Council.
Strangely, whilst it is a Burnley Council controlled car park,
I have to wait until this afternoon for Towneley Hall to open in order to register my displeasure.
Thinking about it there are dragon's teeth there but the locked barrier went across them!
Is it possible for a Council employee to drive down from the Hall and fail to spot the floodlights on at t'Turf?
That they don't know Burnley are playing Man utd with a record crowd on?
Then think "ey up that's an unusual amount of cars, I know what I'll lock the gates 10mins early, trap 100+ cars
and have a right laugh as they try and get out.
I'll let them cause untold damage to their cars and the grass verges?
Is this scenario just possible?
I don't know about dogging, I wish I had given him a right good f**king.

Rumour was pikey's were circling the area and that's why it was locked.

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
There'd be no logic to that since no one could get onto the site due to it being full of cars.
Furthermore, if cars were able to get off with the barrier closed, then anyone with any degree of determination would be able to get on once the cars had left, barrier or not.
Is the term you used acceptable on this forum?

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
Racism in this country is rightly condemned - generally. But I have come to the conclusion that it is selective and some 'races' seem to be immune from protection. Gypsies seem to be fair game because, for whatever reason, they seem to be very unpopular so no-one really defends them, but to me the glaring example of someone it's okay to racially stereotype are the Russians. Take the Meerkats, loveable and funny and an absolute genious idea from a marketing point of view but...when you see them on the ads for Coronation Street the stereo-typing is just there for all to see, complete with the idea of peasantry and occasional stupidity, but no-one complains because they have (stereotypical) Russian accents. If those accents were changed to stereotypical Pakistani accents the outcry would be so loud the ads wouldn't last 2 days.
Sorry about going off topic for a post but it's just a thought.

Re: Car Park: Towneley High School
The point of all this is that someone is responsible for causing a lot of inconvenience to a large number of motorists. Threads above have mentioned potential to cause accidents, damage to cars/grass verges, and possible flashpoints near a football ground.
As someone above said, it may just have been an employee of the 'car park owners' making a silly decision. If so, it might be that they should be given a disciplinary warning. Also, an instruction should be given to other employees not to close the gate before the prescribed time.
If the employees were acting under instructions from their superiors, the superiors should be given a warning. Could it have been that the owners of the car park were hoping that motorists would queue up at the barrier and pay a penalty fee to be let out? Who knows? I am not suggesting that this is the case. There may be a simple explanation. But there is something that doesn't add up.
Why were the gates closed before 10 p.m?
Why did the officials in the van sit there watching the cars struggle to get out? Why didn't they just re-open the gates.
It would be interesting to hear from '2 Bee Holed' about how he got on with contacting Townley Hall. In particular, do Townley Hall/the council not want motorists to park there on match day?

Now then Boss - about this word Mongooses. Is that the correct plural? A guy at a zoo was looking to aquire a breeding pair and dashed off a letter to another zoo requesting that they send a pair of Mongooses. He looked at it and changed it to Mongeese. That didn't look right either so he tried Mongai. In the end he wrote, Dear Sir, could you please send me a Mongoose. PS: could you send me another as well.
I'll get my coat.

Id suggest parking somewhere else but you live and learn Miss MarpleUnderSeige wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 7:39 pmDevils_Advocate wrote:
This would require fans getting back to their car by 9:30pm at the latest. Leaving the ground and walking back to the car park takes about 10-15 minutes. This would require fans to leave at about 9:15p.m.The match ends at around 9:40pm (including extra time). Are you suggesting that fans leave the match before the 'half way point' in the second half. Where is the common sense in that?

That's not common sense. How many people do you know (other than yourself) who arrive more than half an hour early for every appointment?Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:20 pmCommom sense would suggest getting back to your car with a good 30 mins to spare before the car park gates are due to be locked. Anyone cutting it any finer only have themselves to blame and should quit their whining.
As for getting n touch with the council then give it a rest as they have real issues to deal with and not your first world problems
I think your misusing your "Devil's advocate" persona this time. It isn't just about posting what everyone else disagrees with; it's about making valid arguments that other people can use to test their beliefs.
