Second half was just as bad as the first and you’re deluded if you think otherwise. Aston Villa allowed us the ball, mitigating a genuine threat down the left hand side and allowing us to create an overload where you’ve got a right back who can’t make a five yard pass and certainly can’t cross. The first half was just inexplicable. Half of them looked like they were on the **** and the other half genuinely looked like they didn’t give a ****. You get pelters on here for even suggesting that some players might not care but some of them today looked like they’d rather be elsewhere. One shot on target in the whole game against a shocking side was absolutely pathetic. A horrid day all round and we’re clearly sliding towards relegation at an alarming rate.

Pretty much this.

Might have given Pope a 6, he did a couple of decent saves.

Barnes 4
Wood 6 (plus 2 for the goal)

Painful watching that first half.
And Heck, while we don't often create that much going forward, we do look poor when we're trying to find a use for the ball as an attacking unit.
We're in big, big trouble.

Two subs and a bollocking helped us a little but still didn't have the attack to get back into the game. Central midfield was awful, losing the ball, no forward passes.. Usual side to side stuff.

Brady is finished as far as the PL is concerned and sadly has never recovered a level of form following his serious injury(s).

Only worse display Ihave seen this season was Spurs.

Pope 6
Bardsley 5
Tarkowski 3 what was wrong with him today, ponderous at best.
Mee 5
Taylor 6 did well going forward
Brady 3 lost the ball for the first, offered nothing going forward
Westwood 5
Cork 5
McNeil 6
Wood 6
Barnes 3. Looked completely out of sorts

Gudmundsson 7
Rodriguez 7

After the next 4 games we will be in the bottom 3.

Pope 6 - difficult for him to save the 1st. Did everytbi g else steadily
Bardsley 5 - too loose too often
Tarkowski 5 as above
Mee 4 - as above and at fault for the crucial 1st
Taylor 6 mom - looked to create and pick of defence
McNeill 5 - curates egg. Grew in the 2nd half but peculiarly vanished for the last 15
Westwood 4 - gets an extra point for a decent assist otherwise worst hes played for a long time
Cork 4 - slow, weak and ponderous
Brady 3 - shocking
Barnes 3 - gave us nothing- needs resting
Wood 5 - struggled all afternoon but good header for the goal - mind you had 2 other decent chances too

Rodriguez 5 - better than Barnes and a bit unlucky with the first chance it he has to tuck that in from there
JBG 5 - like McNeill was bright to begin with but drifted out in that final 15.

That was pretty awful given the quality of the opposition. Barnes and Cork have been generally out of sorts for most of the last 6 or 7 games. Drinkwater looked set to come on then we score and he sits back down. It needed a replacement for either of the middle 2 much earlier.
Credit to Villa for their game plan which was to squash any outlet from the long ball and use the pace they jave. But we pretty muxh gifted 3 goals through **** poor defending.

Agree with that, I’ve never really been convinced at any point, maybe that’s due to injuries but it doesn’t really make any difference.

Pope 7 - not much to do
Bardsley 5 - dreadful going forward when we needed an option on the right all game. Gudmundsson ended up on the left because of how useless Bardsley is.
Tarkowski 7 - solid enough but need to watch the goals back.
Mee 7 - see tarks
Taylor 8 - really good performance
Brady 5 - really poor
Westwood 5 - struggles to pass the ball forward nearly as much as cork. We have a problem in the centre of midfield as nobody shows at all, so we are forced wide every time, and then back, and wide again. We NEVER play through the middle which is due to our non existent centre mids.
Cork 4 - see Westwood but worse. Most ponderous, weak, slow player I have ever seen.
McNeil 7 - good performance, especially first had he was excellent and was good second half drifting into the middle, where cork and Westwood failed to be.
Wood 8 - good game from him, surprising amount stuck considering we hoof it to him and they had big strong centre backs. Held it up well, and a good goal, should have had another though.
Barnes 3 - Worst I have ever seen him play. Completely ineffective and didn’t impact the game in a single positive way. Falls over, complains, dives and takes stupid long shots when we get the ball into any half decent position.

Jay rod 7 - good touch and showed some fight.

Gudmundsson 7 - get him in instead of Brady now, good player, just stay fit please.

For the first half an hour Tarky looked like he had never played football before.

I think most of them had supped more than me last night.

Pope 6 - 2 decent saves
Bardsly 5 offered
Tarkowski 5
Mee 6
Taylor 6
McNeil 5
Westwood 4 gave the ball away quite a lot, avoided a couple of 50/50s
Cork 5 same as above, but with added slow and ponderous none penetrative passing
Barnes 4 limitations clearly visable
Wood 5 how he missed the target so often was alarming
Rodriguez 7 came on and wanted it, was LB, RW and all over. One of few to show fight and pride
Brady 3 his time must be up here, he is very, very poor. Offers zero and looks lost.
JBG 6 always showed for the ball, positive, tried to work openings. Has to start infront of Brady or Hendrick

Mr Dyche 3 really slow start. Struggle to see the game plan as theres no football even trying to be played.
Same tactics, same approach regardless of opposition.
Really needs to be proactive rather than reactive.

Signs are there that the rot has genuinely set in, he looks lost on the touchline. It's like the players are doing polar opposite of what he's instructed.

Pope 5
Bardsley 3 man marking was beyond him
Tarkowski 3 absolute shocker
Mee 5 just mark your man Ben
Taylor 7** ridiculous that the best creative outlet we had today is a one footed full back

Brady 3 chronic
Westwood 5 another assist but poor
Cork 4
McNeil 6 knackered at the end

Barnes 3 fall down or take first time shot. No other options
Wood 6 missed a sitter again - it’s pointless playing it to his feet

Gudmundsson 5 didn’t take his man on
Rodriguez 5 missed a sitter but offers more than Barnes
currently

Abysmal

Dreadful clueless performance. We had no idea how to break down Villa, who with more confidence would have gone on to win the game by 3 or 4.

Lack of investment is starting to show. The midfield is woeful, weak and lacks any penetrative force. Brady and Cork both gave the goals away and Westwood had a hand in the disallowed one.

Awful first half. More energy and desire in the second half but no skill, finesse or brains to break teams down. It was obvious all match we were losing the midfield battle and getting overrun but as usual Dyche just makes like for like subs. He is so stubborn and his team's so one dimensional when it goes wrong there is no way back. Desperately need players in Jan (right back, centre mid and an attacker with pace). Doubt we will sign anyone. Going to be touch and go to stay up this season I reckon.

Cork : 3
Brady : 3

Jay : 6

Dyche : 3...poor team selection and very poor in not changing our tactics / formation when we were being completely over run in midfield....I’m not defending that and I do not care what he says he got it wrong.

Truly awful and after this tough run of fixtures in January we are likely to find ourselves in the relegation places.

First half as bad as it gets. Disgraceful performance from a team who are meant to be showing a tv audience why we are deservedly a Premier league team. Our tactics are dire, our ball retention dire, our attitude is dire and what should be entertainment is none existent.
Sick of it, nearly but not quite getting sick of Dyche.

Horrific, absolutely horrific. What the heck was Dyche doing not starting Jay and JBG after decent performances against United. The guy is a complete puzzle sometimes. The first half was the worst half of football I’ve seen at the turf for a long while. Massive issues all over the park. God knows what Drinkwater has to do to get a game when our midfield is so abysmal. The last 9 mins then summed up our anti football methods given we had no clue how to break them down when they let us have the ball.

The next 4 games are frightening, every chance we could be in the bottom 4 come February. New players needed all over the pitch but we all know that it won’t be addressed this window.

Worried.

Deep breath time. A very bad day at the office for the players, and an even worse one for Dyche, who got his team selection completely wrong and watched as his team were completely outgunned tactically for 45 minutes by Villa. Even if the second half was miles better, you don't pick too many points playing for 45 minutes with a 2 goal handicap, and even then as the half wore on the folly of asking the same players to play all of 3 games in 6 days was evident from the obvious fatigue.

Anyway, to ratings:

Pope - 7 - Couple of decent saves.

Bardsley - 4 - we have a problem at right back and it needs rectifying. Abysmal defensively in the first half when he was one of at least 3 culpable to the first goal and inexplicably showed Grealish onto his right foot for the second, didn't have much of that to do in the second so his limitations as an attacking and possession based weapon were more evident. Spent the last 15 minutes doing a decent impression of a remote controlled kids toy on Christmas Day - zooming around with no discernible logic or pattern, finding himself in positions he really isn't suited to.

Taylor - 7 - The pick of a very poor back four.

Tarkowski - 5 - will want to forget a shambling, lackadaisical first half in a hurry. The second half was better, but then he didn't have too much defending to do.

Mee - 6 - along with Tarkowski and Bardsley, at sixes and sevens for the first goal, and generally bewildered at times by Villa's movement, but at least stuck at it and did the basics OK.

Cork - 5 - another who was miles off in the first half, generally lethargic, culpable for the second goal and completely unable to get to grips with Villa's shape. Much better in the second half but the bar is low.

Westwood - 5 - See Cork, except that fortunately for him, when he gave the ball away cheaply inside his own half, Villa fluffed it. Decent cross for the goal.

McNeil - 6 - One of the few players to emerge with credit from the first half, when he looked threatening from the right hand side on the rare occasions we got into the game, and influential during our excellent start to the second half. Unfortunately, from the hour mark, the toll of playing 3 games in 6 days in a role that requires lots of running told on him, and he was a passenger for the final quarter of the game.

Brady - 5 - Didn't think he was any worse than anyone else in the first half and thought that the first goal owed more to Barnes' abysmal lay off that gave Brady little chance, than to anything Brady did wrong. But he's not doing enough when he gets a chance in the team to really create a case for a longer run in the team, and whilst anyone else might have been hooked (and some might have made more sense), he could have few complaints.

Barnes - 4 - Shouldn't have started, offered very little and inevitably hooked at half time.

Wood - 5 - Not a lot stuck with him, and whilst he took his goal well, he missed a couple of other presentable chances and wasn't his usual effective best.

Rodriguez - 8 - best player on the pitch in the second half, gave us a dimension to our game that we'd completely lacked previously, dropping deep to link the game together and giving us an ability to switch the game and make the pitch bigger. Unfortunately we didn't make enough of it, and there's still work to do on the training pitch to make us play to his strengths.

JBG - 6 - Had a chance to get into the game that Brady never really had, but whilst he did OK, in truth he threatened a bit but produced relatively little.

The first half was utterly, incomprehensibly, undefendably rank - possibly the worst 45 minutes of Dyche's tenure, and certainly one of the worst for him personnally because he takes a lot of the blame for the way we set up and were picked off today.

We were outplayed, outrun, outmuscled but above all out thought. There has been reason for concern about the effectiveness of 4-4-2 underpinned by the Barnes/Wood partnership for a little while; this was the day when those concerns really came home to roost. Villa guessed the line up, went with three centre halves, stuck a midfielder right in front of them to screen the knock down and encouraged Trezeguet and especially Grealish to find pockets of space between and behind our midfield two. It worked a treat, but they were probably also helped by the fact that with 5 changes, much of their team was a good deal fresher than a Burnley team in which too many players were trying to raise themselves for a third gruelling 90 minutes in six days, and in which at least a couple of players were managing knocks (including Barnes, making his selection even more bizarre).

When Rodriguez came on with the novel idea of looking for space and to link play in midfield rather than looking for contact and a scrap with the centre half, all of a sudden we looked a much better team, and actually the first 20 minutes of the second half were in many respects the most enterprising period of football we've produced at home for quite some time. It showed we don't have to completely throw the playbook out and start again to be both effective and easier on the eye. But for all the neater approach play, we still lacked composure in the final third and were guilty of forcing things and snatching at half-opportunities, and in truth well before Wood reduced the arrears, we were beginning to look low on energy.

Whilst Rodriguez was definitely the right change, I'm not sure that taking Brady off for JBG was quite so effective, and in truth we might have been better giving Brady 20 minutes to see whether he could have more of an influence when we were on the front foot, and then looking at whether McNeil had the legs to finish the game. And it remains a mystery why Bardsley finished the game - I assumed the plan immediately before our goal was for Drinkwater to replace him and Westwood (who can actually cross a ball) to sit in at right back for the final 15 minutes - quite what changed just because we scored remains a mystery and his hesitancy was rewarded with a ponderous final 15 minutes as we failed to work the ball quickly enough.

No need to panic - we've got decent players and more than enough to avoid this wobble becoming more serious - but this must be a wake up call. Dyche has been guilty of being too slow to change things before, and sometimes needs a jolt to change tack. There needs to be a bit of a tactical rethink and the way we set up in the second half needs to be closer to the template for the foreseeable future.

From watching Villa on TV the standout player and obvious threat is Grealish. For all his falling over and pirouettes when tackled, he is everything our midfield isn't. Energetic, creative, pacy and skilful so we decide to allow him the freedom of Turf Moor when he had the ball. The outcome sadly was inevitable.

If we persist with 4 4 2 with Cork Westwood and Brady starting, I worry about our final league position. Cos that performance absolutely stank.

That was bad, very bad! The only reason our second half appeared better was because Villa stopped the high press and allowed us the ball. Delivery of crosses was awful today, as bad as we've been this season

Pope - 6 unlucky not to stop the first hit right at his feet little to do apart from the goals

Bardsley - 5 sloppy. Cracking tackle on Grealish though.

Tarkowski - 5 also sloppy

Mee - 6

Taylor - 7 decent second half once he didn't have Brady in front of him

Westwood - 3 crap and has been for some time now. He's more useful providing **** content for the social media team than he is to the football team. Incredible he got another 90 mins.

Cork - 5

McNeil - 6 again lively when he came inside 2nd half

Brady - 3 presume JBG wasn't fit enough to do 90 mins cos there can't be any other explanation for Brady starting.

Barnes - 3 like Westwood, he's been awful for some time now. Great when he's scoring but largely useless when he's not.

Wood - 5 pretty poor overall

Rodriguez - 6 once gain he was far more effective than Barnes, we play better football when he's in the side as he's more mobile and spreads the ball about. Problem for him is he drops too deep at times and he should have bagged early in the 2nd half

Gudmundsson - 7 like Rodriguez, the football is miles better when he's on as he doesn't give the ball away cheaply. Asking a bit too much of him to carry the team though seeing as he's only just back from injury.

First half was an absolute disgrace and it would have been fair for AshCabs to have been sent packing in their comedy bus and taken half the team with them.

Second was better but there was too much to do even against a side as bad as villa. At least to football improved a bit and we saw once agian that we can actually mive it about on the floor.

Dyche has made a real error today not starting with the team that finished against United. The wider picture though is that players are coming on as subs and being told by him that they've done well, then he goes back to the same mainstays again next game.

Players hardly make an impact because they don't get any game time, so whilst consistency of selection is important, too much is also detrimental.

We've got enough about us to stay up but we've got to start using it now, especially as there won't be any signings in January.

Pope 7 - kept us in it
Bardsley 4
Tarkowski 5
Mee 6
Taylor 6
Brady 3
Westwood 3
Cork 4
McNeil 6
Wood 5
Barnes 3

Gudmundsson 6
Rodriguez 6

Allowed Wesley to drop in and link up Villa's play, with Grealish sniffing between the lines. Very naive really - needed a midfield anchor there to nullify this threat.

JayRod & JBG to start next match

Utter rubbish. How can we bench Jay and JBG after the Utd second half display? Having Brady and McNeill on the pitch makes us weaker on both flanks as McNeill inevitably gets shunted to the right. We need a right back. And how bad must Drinkwater be in training to not be able to shift either Cork or Westwood on current form? It would be negligent not to strengthen in midfield this window.

Pope 5
Bardsley 4
Tarkowski 4
Mee 4
Taylor 5
Brady 3
Westwood 3
Cork 4
McNeil 5
Wood 5
Barnes 3

Gudmundsson 6
Rodriguez 6

Look on the bright side - only three days to wait before our second string turn in an even worse performance against lower league opposition.

As woeful as Sheff Utd 1st half. A little better in the second mainly because we stopped lumping it up top.

We have been before and I expect us to be again. The last time it led to relegation at the end of the season.......

Pope 6 couple of decent stops
Bardsley 4 another poor game from a stop gap player
Tarkowski 3 as bad as he’s ever been
Mee 4 struggling for any sort of form
Taylor 5 got forward enough but his final ball was absolutely awful
Westwood 3 weak, gave the ball away, made poor decisions constantly. Just terrible
Cork 3 as above
Barnes 3 not sure what’s wrong with him but just terrible
Wood 4 gets one point for the goal.
Rodriguez 6 offered us something else but seriously needs to work on his decision making
Brady 3 i think his last chance may have gone. Nothing to suggest he can be the player he was over a long period now .
JBG 5 gave more energy but never threatened.

Dyche 0 - that first half was as bad as it’s been. Our first half performances have not been good for a while but that was something else. Villa sat back second half but it wasn’t much better.
Worrying lack of drive in that team.

Two subs in a performance like that when we are chasing the game in a busy Christmas period is just baffling as well.

Pope 6 coupe do decent first half saves
Bardsley 5 looks to me like teams are letting him be the man to have have time on the ball, knowing the chances are he won’t deliver anything positive, kept slowing the play down.
Taylor 6 I didn’t think he was great, poor defensively a few times and crossing wasn’t great but better than most (edited this to a 6 from a 5)
Tarks 5 off it today
Mee 6 ok
Brady 3 oh my god
McNeil 6 shattered at the end, the poor lad is our only hope of creating and is having to now pick the ball up deeper and deeper to make anything happen
Cork 4 looked absolutely shattered, even slower than normal
Westwood 4 worst I’ve seen him
Barnes 3 absolutely woeful, has had 1 good game (West Ham) in months. Loved by many for his fight, that’s long gone or atleast completely ineffective now and without that he offers nothing as his movement is atrocious and rarely does he threaten the goal.
Wood 5 I’d have gone 6 had he taken one of his other golden chances as o didn’t think he was too bad atleast gets into positions to score.

Jay rod 6
JBG 6
Both should have started as they change the game against Utd. Dyche has had a stinker today by not starting these two and again their invention helped us play better
